GNSS DATA AND PRODUCTS TCS
WHAT WE DO…
OVERVIEW
The objective of EPOS-GNSS is to provide, through the European
Plate Observing System (EPOS), access to GNSS data, metadata,
and products in support of the Solid Earth Sciences.
These efforts are done in close partnership with EUREF, the IAG sub-
commission for the European Reference Frame.
EPOS-GNSS supports Solid Earth Sciences in Europe through the European
Plate Observing System (EPOS). Its goals are:
• to facilitate access, through the European Plate Observing System
(EPOS), to relevant GNSS data, metadata, and data products
• to coordinate the archiving of relevant GNSS data, metadata and data
products
• to promote best practice for GNSS station operation, data quality control
and data management
• to maintain and distribute open source software for GNSS data and
metadata discoverability
• to maintain and develop GNSS data products
WHO WE ARE
ADDITIONAL PARTNERS PROVIDING DDSS (DATA, DATA PRODUCTS, SERVICES, OR SOFTWARE) DURING THE
OPERATIONAL PHASE OF EPOS
• BKG | Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie, Germany
• LM | Lantmäteriet, Sweden
• WUT | Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography, Poland
WORKING TOGETHER TO PROVIDE GNSS DATA AND PRODUCTS IN EUROPE
OBJECTIVES
The GNSS data and product portals:
• aim to increase the quantity and availability of GNSS data at European level
• deliver high quality data (with associated quality check indicators and
metadata validation) and products such as:
► positions
► times series
► velocities
► strain rates
• provide European researchers in Earth Sciences with relevant information
The GNSS Data and Products TCS aims to help the scientific community to create new
science related with the interaction between Space Geodesy and Solid Earth
SERVICES
For the data distribution service, GNSS Data
and Products TCS focuses on data (RINEX
Files) that are periodically available, hours or
days, after data acquisition.
Through GLASS (Geodetic Linking Advanced
Software System), an open source platform,
all data and computed products (positions,
times series, velocities and strain rates) from
a set of connected but distributed repositories
are made available for researchers in a
uniform manner.
EPOS GNSS gateways offers access to data
and products from station belonging to
EUREF and regional/national networks.
USE CASES
• Sharing data with the community by adding GNSS stations/networks to the
EPOS network
• Discovery and download of GNSS data of stations running for at least 3
years and with data availability greater than 90%
• Obtaining GNSS data for the estimation of Volcano deformation
• Access to GNSS data quality results for monitoring purposes
• Compute the velocity of a station using external information to detect co-
seismic offsets
• Volcano velocity/deformation field estimation for multidisciplinary modelling
• Co-seismic displacements associated with a Mw7 earthquake
• GNSS time series at the Eurasia-Nubia plate boundary
• Compute the velocity of a station to detect post-seismic deformation
EXAMPLE OF USE CASE (TIME SERIES)
EXAMPLE OF USE CASE (VELOCITY FIELD)
CROSS BOUNDARIES
WHAT IS THE CROSS-BOUNDARIES BETWEEN GNSS DATA AND PRODUCTS
TCS AND THE OTHERS EPOS TCSS?
• The Near-Fault Observatory, Satellite Data and Volcanology TCSs
also use GNSS observations. The GLASS software package, that is
used to disseminate the GNSS data, will also be useful for these
TCS.
• The Seismology TCS is also interested in using GNSS data. In the
future we intend to provide real-time high-rate GNSS streaming
which will be useful, in combination with seismological data, for early
warning systems
TARGET
WHO DO THESE SERVICES AND PRODUCTS TARGET?
• Data Providers: those that want to use our services and tools
(GLASS) to disseminate available GNSS data and metadata.
• Users: scientists and others who want to discover, access and use
the data and products.
HOW THE ACCESS WORK?
• Data Providers: Access requires that they agree to follow a set of
guidelines and provide minimum service levels of data availability
and quality check.
• Users: Access is free for data users although some identification
may be required.
GLASS DESCRIPTION AND COMPONENTS
GLASS description:
• Background
► it is based on a network of nodes hosting software developed to manage and store metadata,
and distribute data, metadata and products.
• Requirements
► a computer with Linux and Internet access
• Licensing
► the GLASS package will be open source
(Creative Commons)
GLASS encompass the following key elements:
• Physical components
► repositories (files and databases with data and products)
• Web services
► portals, monitoring tools, data and product mining solutions
• Software applications
► managing interactions between repositories and services (quality control, submission
and validation, synchronization and consistency, redundancy and uniqueness)
GLASS FLOWCHART
The infographic shows
the flow of GNSS
metadata, data and
products within EPOS.
The GNSS Data and
Product gateways are the
main points of access for
the users.
The long term monitoring
of data in EPOS is carried
out by the Quality
Monitoring Centre (not
part of GLASS package).
M3G CENTRE (SUBMISSION AND QC OF
METADATA)
M3G is the portal where operational centres (which operate the GNSS
stations) can upload information about their centre (name, contacts, ...),
the networks they manage (name, contacts, ...) and the station
metadata (receiver, antenna, contacts, ...).
