First Nations and Lacrosse

Early Years
   Dates back to the early 17th century
   Games were sometimes major events that
    could last several days
   Teams could consist of 100 to 1,000 men
   Nets would be from 500 yards, to several
    miles apart
   Nets were usually decided between 2 big
    rocks or tree stumps
Rules
   Rules decided the day before the
    game
   No out of bounds
   No touching the ball with your hands
Rituals
   Players would decorate their bodies
    with paint and charcoal
   Players would paint their sticks with
    objects that represent the game to
    them
   The medicine man preformed rituals
    on the players before a game
Equipment

   Some early lacrosse balls were made
    out of wood, then later on they were
    made out of deer skin stuffed with fur
   The netting was made up of wattup or
    deer sinew
   Lacrosse sticks were made like a big
    wooden spoon
Now A Days
   Games last 2-3 hours
   Equipment is used
   3 Officials
   Played with a rubber ball
   Box lacrosse and field lacrosse
   Games start with a faceoff at the
    center
Box Lacrosse
   6 players on at a time for each team
   Played inside an arena
   A players lacrosse stick must be
    between 40-46 inches
   Full Contact
Field Lacrosse
   10 on at a time for each team
   Full contact
   Played on a soccer or football field
