Good Morning Ladies and Gentleman, my name is Claire McCauley and I am the Commercial Manager for The Crystal one of the most sustainable buildings in the world and a truly unique Meetings, conference and events venue taking in the Worlds largest exhibition on Sustainability.
The Crystal is located in East London, a destination of extreme regeneration, 10 minutes from the Olympic Park, London City Airport and next to the recently launched Emirates Cable Car. The location is becoming as attractive as the building with a host of leisure, retail and residential projects emerging with the Excel, Westfield Shopping Centre and 02 leisure district within easy reach.
With more than half of the world’s population living in urban areas, and an expected increase of this to 70% by 2050 Siemens identified a key opportunity to maximise their market share within an expanding market place, whilst taking the opportunity to be a leader in innovation, education and development in the sustainability sectors that their tecnology is already pioneering. Siemens invested £30million in to building The Crystal, which took 18 Months to complete. They worked with a number of innovative companies to create The Crystal which has been awared BREEAM AND LEED certification and is now working towards ISO 2012 1. These partners include Pringle Brandon, Architects, Event Communications, Wilkinson Eyre, Arup and ISG. The project had the full backing of the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, whom also offically opened the building in September 2012.
So what makes this building the most sustainable event space in the world, well the building boasts a number of key features to enable it to work efficiently, considerate to the environment and to the area that it is based in and also gives an economic return on the £30million investment. These include the following
Ground Source Heat Pumps supply 100% of The Crystal’s heating and most of its cooling Not a drop of water is wasted due to everything being recycled or reused Linked to Smart Building System, intelligent lighting means levels will be automatically adjusted Connecting to a smart grid enables Siemens to actively cooperate with the UK Low Carbon Initiative A dedicated on site waste storage area with separate units ensures recycling of paper, plastics, metals and organic waste

The building is not only 3 dimensional in its shape and architecture it is 3 dimensional in its purpose. In order to safe guard its objectives the building is used as a Hub for innovation, a think tank for industry leaders, city planners and decision makers to come together to discuss change The 2 nd function of the building is The exhibition which is free provides a thought provoking interactive journey, and aims to challenge and reinvent the way we all think about our cities
The exhibition focuses on the three elements that make #
