2. Importance of visibility and impact
of the research
• Universities’ contribution to the knowledge economy
(incl. media)
• Improve researchers’ chances in the competition for
research funding (e.g. governmental)
• Universities can position themselves well to work with
industry or third sector partners.
• Open Access also promotes visibility

5. Mendeley
• A free reference manager and academic social network
• Mendeley Web: public profile for researchers, catalog
of documents, collaborative groups (“the cloud portion
of Mendeley”)
• Mendeley Desktop: organizing pdf:s, reference
management, helps to write papers
• Papers, Groups, People
• Import bookmarklet tool
• Embed profile widget for researchers’ homepage

6. Altmetric
• Article level visibility
• Free bookmarklet on recent scholarly articles to see
how much attention they've gotten online:
• Twitter, Facebook, News, Pinterest, Blogs, Google+, Reddit
, Demographics
• An example: Approaching a state shift in Earth’s
biosphere by Barnosky AD in Nature 486, 52–58 (07 June
2012)

8. ORCID
Open Researcher & Contributor ID
• Open Researcher and Contributor ID non-profit
organization (ORCID)
• To solve the name ambiguity problem in scholarly
communication
• To create a central registry of unique identifiers for
individual researchers and an open and transparent
linking mechanism between ORCID and other current
author identifier schemes
• The ORCID service is launched later this year: individuals
may create, manage and share their ORCID record
without a membership fee

10. F1000 Posters
• A structured open access repository for the deposition
of posters and slide presentations
• Venue for discussion on the information in conference
presentations
• Including all those who couldn’t join the conference
• Visibility for research that may never lead to a published
article (e.g. negative results or case studies)
• Associating presentation with resulting publications
• Deposited posters are eligible for selection and
evaluation by F1000's evaluation service

11. Pinterest
• pinboard-style social photo sharing website
• to create and manage theme-based image collections
such as events, interests, hobbies, and more.
• possible to browse other pinboards for inspiration, 're-
