This document is a newsletter from the Parks and Recreation Department of the Town of Dyer, Indiana promoting their fall 2018 programs and activities. It highlights classes like Kindermusik for different age groups, dance, gymnastics, and swim lessons. It also provides information on the parks in Dyer, volunteers who support the department, memorial trees and benches that can be donated, and a partnership with Munster Parks and Recreation that allows Dyer residents to participate in their programs at resident rates. Basic park rules are also listed. The newsletter aims to inform residents of the many recreational opportunities available to them and their families in Dyer for the fall season.

What an amazing summer we’ve had filled with
music, camps, new playgrounds, and more!
I hope that you have gotten your fill of park-
time before the kids head back to school, but
don’t forget that there are plenty of after-school
programs that will keep your whole family active,
learning new skills, and meeting new friends.
Since I joined the Park Board, I have been
consistently amazed by how much goes on
behind the scenes, and the initiative that the Parks
& Recreation Department takes to improve the
quality of life for all of us. In that spirit, I would like
to tell you a few fun facts that you may not know
about our Parks & Recreation Department.
Did you know that Dyer has 22 parks? It’s true. You
may know our larger community parks like Elmer-
Miller, Northgate, Central Park and Pheasant Hills,
but there are an additional 18 neighborhood
parks and natural areas! In total, Dyer boasts
over 200 acres of park land that includes 15
playgrounds, 5 pavilions, 6 walking trails, 4
volleyball courts, 14 sports fields, and other
amenities. You’ll find a complete list of the parks
and their features on pages 20 & 21.
Did you know that Dyer’s Department of Parks
& Recreation has 2 tree nursery locations? Our
nurseries are located under the water towers by
Protsman and Sandy Ridge. There, approximately
500 seedlings are cared for until they are ready to
be moved to one of our parks. We take our trees
seriously. There are currently almost 400 trees in our
parks. At Central Park you will find name markers
and interesting facts about every different tree
and shrub species planted there.
Did you know that memorial benches and
memorial trees are available? Memorial benches
and memorial trees can be purchased by those
who want to honor someone special, and will be
placed within a park. You can talk to our Director
of Parks & Recreation, Michael O’Shea, if you
want to know more about this option.
Did you know that we have new bat boxes in our
parks? A big “thank you” to Ben Watta who built
and installed 7 bat boxes in 4 of our parks as an
Eagle Scout Project this summer. These boxes will
provide housing for bat colonies. Bats provide
many benefits to our ecosystem, including natural
insect control. Thank you for your contribution to
our community, Ben!
There is a lot more going on than I could possibly
fit into one letter. If you’d like to know more, or
offer a suggestion or comment, come see us! Our
business meetings are the second Tuesday, and
our study sessions are the fourth Tuesday of each
month at 6pm in the Town Hall.
I hope to meet you soon,
Zara Fagen
Park Board President

Living Tree & Park Bench Memorials
Help improve the quality of life and the environment by having
a tree planted in one of your Dyer Parks to remember or honor
a person or organization. A minimum donation of $500 will
purchase a tree, plaque, and a take home plaque. You may
designate the park but Dyer Parks & Recreation will determine
the exact location. Trees are planted each fall. As part of your
donation, the person’s name, year of donation and park will be
added to one of the Living Tree Memorial plaques on display at
the Dyer Town Hall.
Park Bench Memorials are also available. For a donation of $750
we will install a park bench with a plaque on the seat back
of the bench in a park of your choice. Exact locations will be
determined by staff but suggestions are welcome. For more
information on either program contact Dyer Parks & Recreation
at (219) 865-2505.

Baby is the star in Dream Pillow, with each activity carefully planned
to stimulate the developing brain, thereby promoting physical, social,
cognitive, emotional, and language development. But it is the parent
who is watching and guiding this little star on the rise, and Dream Pillow,
like all Village units, is written with the parent very much in mind.
“Skinnamarink” and many other favorite songs to enjoy! (6 weeks)
Zoom Buggy: How many ways can Baby and Parent Zoom in Kindermusik
Village? Hop in the Zoom Buggy and find out! Through a variety of songs,
chants, and instrumental selections you will experience the rumbling of
a baby buggy, the squeaky stroller, the bumpa bumpa bumpa of the
wagon, the train chuggin’ up thetrack and much more. (6 weeks)

while developing their growing language and social-

HELLO WEATHER, LET’S PLAY TOGETHER! (12 WEEKS)
Books, storytelling, language, drama, puppets – these are all essential
ingredients to the Imagine That! curriculum. Hello Weather, Let’s Play
Together is no exception, encouraging families to enjoy music and
special times together in all types of weather! Children will explore
the connected, smooth sounds of legato and the separated sounds of
staccato. They’ll learn about fast and slow tempos. Adding to the thrill
are at home projects such as making wind chimes, rain hats, sleigh bells
and snow boots!
Mixed-age classes allow infants through six-year olds—
and their caregivers - to gather together for a fun-
filled learning experience, accommodating all levels of
learning and musical ability.

great introduction to the program. If you
have participated, this is an opportunity
to continue your musical fun until the new
session begins in February. For children ages Newborn to 5 years old.
Min 4/ Max 10.
Level 2 classes encourage older toddlers to initiate
their own ideas, nurturing social-emotional growth
and cognitive development in a playful, exploratory
environment. 12 weeks. Min 5/Max 8
MILK AND COOKIES: Imagine the aroma of baking cookies, the coziness
of the family kitchen, the chatter among sisters, brothers, grandmas,
granddads, mom and dad, and the anticipation and excitement of
having friends come to visit. Captured in Milk and Cookies, these special
moments at home are times to be shared and treasured. Milk & Cookies
songs and activities promote interaction between parent and child
where the parent gently guides their child’s learning and the process
of scaffolding takes place. Capturing the security, excitement and
familiarity of “at home” moments is the ideal theme for empowering the
parent to act as teacher.

younger classes are developed to safely get children moving and exploring the very new world around them, to inherently build confidence in each step and define their most
