CEMETERY CHAPELS AND MORTUARY BUILDING Architecture
Context:
The cemetery complex in Vrbanja includes
nine objects related with cemetery
function.The most important is the
Chapels and Mortuary building, which has
basement and ground floor with useful
area of 2685,40 m2. The Regulation Plan
placed the chapel along the main complex
axis and at the central square. The
footpath leads from the central cemetery
square proceeding to the main Chapel.
The access road leads into an economic
courtyard placed on the back side of the
chapels and mortuary building.
Design:
Function of these objects requires
introverted architecture of shadows and
closeness, which derived the design of
the building. Chambers dedicated for
paying respect to the dead and for
mourning are discreetly lit up and the
mood in the mortuary is set by the warm
colour of the wood enclosing walls and
sacred character due to the avoidance of
a direct view to the outside. Their
sacredness is accented by the roof
lights. The main entrance is accented by
a canopy which is exceeded to the
building regulation line. The main
corridors in the object are in form of
ramps, and therefore easy accessible.
Facade is clad by a local material-sa
tone called PLIVIT with light brown and
light gray colour and horizontal bar
pattern.

COMPETITION DESIGN_THE HALL OF SPORTS
WITH THE CONFERENCE CENTRE _3th Award
The design concept was to establish
changeable and dynamic multifunctional
space.
Accent has been put on the motion.
Movement inside the object was
accomplished by ramps. It is a
diagrammatic symbol of a movement on the
main court and it´s changes of intensity
and level of the game.
The External cladding and the internal
bridges are from GKD steel sliding
panels, that gives changeable appearance
to the building allowing constant change
of lightning. The Concrete structure of
the building is connected with a ceiling
construction above the sports hall which
is made off steel trusses.
The entrance hall is connected with the
restaurant and the conference hall.
Above this block are the judges and
delegates rooms, which are accessed by
the internal bridges, and connected with
a journalist’s box. The entrance into
ancillary rooms is from the back side of
the building. Those rooms are
differentiated by position and height,
contributing to dynamic outer
appearance.

COMPETITION DESIGN FOR THE LIBRARY
EXTENSION
The extension of the library building
had to be fit into the strict site
conditions of the protected central city
area.
The form of the building is derived from
the building function itself as
reminiscent of books on a shelf.
Introverted form of the street facade
and opened courtyard facade accentuate
the concept.
The External cladding is made of corten
steel plates, using the colour that
prevails on surrounding buildings.
The main entrance is trough the existing
passage leading in an atrium between two
buildings that besides communications
contains a reading stairs and exhibition
area. The facade of the old building
towards the atrium is glazed. The ground
floor is used as a children´s library
and the first floor is used for the
science library and the reading room,
both connected to the main building
through the central corridor.

STUDENT WORK: MUSEUM OF SPORTS
Context:
The Location predicted for the Museum of
Sports is in Blok 26 at New Belgrade.
Simplified lines represent homage to the
nearby monument of Modern architecture-
Federation building, and a wired ball
clad with steel foil symbolize ball
associated with the Belgrade Arena across
street.
The basic concept of the design is
creation of a low horizontal volume with
sculptures inside and outside the museum,
which contributes to the building and
garden continuity.
The entrance is accented by a concrete
panel and with a concrete wall which
introduces visitors into the building and
simultaneously separates a service and
the main entrance. Glass facade has been
pulled in under a cantilever. The
entrance hall is the place for overall
orientation. The ground floor is intended
to be for temporary exhibitions while the
subfloor is for permanent exhibitions.
Movement through exhibitions is circular.
Mobile partition panels contribute to
flexibility of space.
The Building form is linear, simplified
and could be elongated in the future.
Differentiation between the service and
the public part of the object has been
accentuated through the use of different
materials.

OFFICE BUILDING DERVENTA
The object is placed on the site of an
existing office building at the entrance
into small Meat processing centre, which
has been devastated during the civil
war. Part of the existing building
structure will be used according to
existing scheme as individual offices. A
separated building for the entrance
control is associated with main building
and cantilevered.
The entrance hall has double height.
The first floor is arranged as an open-
plan office due to the request for
flexibility, with a separated restaurant
on the roof terrace. Solid form of the
restaurant facade accentuates different
usage from the rest of the building.

The reconstruction of an old temporary
prison unit into a land registration
                                       office was performed according to
                                       specific standards related to this
buildings. The task was to transform a
                                       devastated object with defined outer
                                       form and non-representative appearance
into a public office. In parallel to the
                                       interior reconstruction and adjustment
to the change of use, the remodelling of
the building outer form was conducted
by cutting narrow windows on the front
facade and by shortening the roof
extensions over the walls, adding the
ramp and the structure above. The new
look obviously reflects the public use
                                       of the building.

 AFFORDABLE HOUSING
 DERVENTA
The house is planned on the very small
parcel at a street crossing with an
 irregular building line. The building
plan is envisaged as an intersection of
two rectangular forms cutting each other
under 15 degrees angle. The project
predicted a garage on the basement
level, using only half of the parcel.
The ground floor is the largest level of
the house accommodating the SE oriented
living room, a combined dinning room and
a kitchen. The main entrance is from
northern side of the building next to
 the bathroom and the staircase.
Irregular form of the ground floor is
abandoned on the first floor where
rectangular shape of the building is
kept, while the irregular parts form the
terraces and a roof garden. The main
rectangular cube of the building was
followed by a wooden cladding on the
 facades.

STUDY FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE RIVER
UNA BANKS

The River Una outlines many
extraordinary natural forms through her
entire flow, therefore is considered to
be one of the most beautiful rivers in
Europe. Urban planning included
definition of boundaries of the
protected area of the twelve-kilometre
river coast length through Bihać.
The zoning inside the protected area is
made based on the analyses of the
current planning documentation and by
valorisation of found conditions.
The regimes of the protection and the
permissible interventions are defined
for every zone. Detail conditions are
defined inside the protective area and
the contact zones. The Study includes
the measures for the protection and
revival of the river Una banks and the
river bed.
A pedestrian foot-path was conducted in
3-5 meters width on the ground and
partially above the river depending on
the particular site conditions. Along
the path many activities are introduced,
such as open theatre, touristic stops,
panorama sites, info points, fishing
stops, beaches.
The most valuable contribution of this
Study is animation and simultaneously
protection of the river and the
riverside.

LSL GLAVATI-PRCANJ

Local study of location for Glavati - Prcanj is
prepared for 24 ha of Prcanj, settlement in Boka
Kotorska.
The plan is based on conservation principles and
protects revalorized values of this part of Boka
Gulf. Main contribution of the document is
establishment of two separate construction zones and
construction free area of St.Ana´s valley.
This way helps to protect one of the last preserved
historic ambient of isolated summer palaces with
family church that belongs to old Kotor´s family
Sbutega.
Separate conditions are defined for reconstruction
of old stone houses and for new constructions.
Significant contribution is establishment of the
special building rules for neighbouring buildings
around cultural monuments and old stone houses.

DUP PRCANJ

Detail urban development plan prepared for 95 ha of
Prcanj, settlement in Boka Kotorska. The settlement
is characterized by its longitudinal line of houses
along the sea coast. The cross section of the
settlement is characterized by three separated
belts, the urban coast houses, the rural area behind
and the forest area at the top of the hill. The
Coast line formed of the old stone houses is
separated as Block 1 and isolated with a belt of
greenery to emphasize this area. Strict building
conditions and protected zones are defined in Block
four, just beside the Holy Mary temple, the focal
point of the bay. This block has lower buildings,
partially rural in character. A Recreation zone is
defined next to the school´s courtyard related to an
existing sport pitch. This zone is on a half way
between two major touristic locations. Major
innovation is a road above the settlement, whose
function is to replace the existing coast road whose
traffic disables approach to the narrow strip of
beaches and puts the architectural heritage of
Prcanj in danger. This new road would connect nearby
settlements and should allow pedestrian use of the
coast road.
Intention of this plan is to protects existing
values and at the same time helps economic and
touristic development.

DUP DONJI ORAHOVAC
DUP DRAZIN VRT

Detail urban development plan is prepared for 81 ha
of two Boka settlements. Drazin vrt is a small
village and every intervention should be planned
very carefully, hence only minor changes are
suggested, such as more functional road and only a
few new buildings. The Touristic settlement is
planned as an ECO lodge village. DUP Orahovac keeps
main guidelines from the existing plan. Entirely new
is a bicycle path across the hill that add richness
in mountaineers' tours and provides access to until
now inaccessible forest area.

URBAN SQUARE

The urban workshop in Tirana was held under the
guidance of NGO organisations and Universities from
Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania. The project task
was finding a locatin inside given urban area, which
has potential to become a meeting place, or a
terciary center of the neighburhood, a new urban
square. The square shape and its structure is result
of the adjacent influences, the site condition,
activities or potential activities.
The resulting urban sculpture acumulates all that
factors and becomes generator of activities. The
square location is on the pedestrian crossroad, but
at the same time it creates impresion of a hidden
garden in a contemporary city.

BATHROOM RECONSTRUCTION

Bathroom design had goal to improve
bathroom comfort, organise necessary
storage space and improve functionality.
Main accent is on the so called cosmetic
area. This area consists of a sink that
is built in a console slab, shelves and
storage units. The large slab area from
time to time becomes a cosmetic table,
and mobile storage cubes are used as
seats. Part of the floor was elevated and
framed with floor and wall bordure,
contributing to visual separation of
toilet area and forming a stair used for
window access. Mobile cubes with wheels
dim.40x40x40 cm are used as bathroom
storage, while one of them, with the top
cover, is used for laundry. All of the
bathroom furniture is custom designed.
Due to number of users (family of five),
hydro massage shower has been set, in
order to reduce the time of bathroom
usage. Windows are made of anodized
aluminium with sanded glass. Ceiling
light is linear and track the floor
bordure.

RESTAURANT „AD LADIOS“,
Interior of the restaurant „Ad Ladios“
is result of complete transformation
of an existent cafe-bar, that was in
extremely bad condition. The Owner
wanted to get peaceful and warm
ambient for dining and drinking of
coffee, using mixture of traditional
and contemporary design elements.
To achieve this goal, warm colours, as
beige and cacao, were used in
combination with wood and wrought
iron.
To get isolated entities, part of the
floor area is lifted. The wood strips
on the ceiling connect interior and
garden, and emphasize the walking
line.
The existent dark space with small
windows and walls clad with wood has
been lit up by enlarged windows and
light wall colours. Floor is in
combination of wood and ceramic tiles.

  • 1. Portfolio Dragana B. Mihic, dipl.ing.arh. M.Arch.
  • 3. CEMETERY CHAPELS AND MORTUARY BUILDING Architecture Context: The cemetery complex in Vrbanja includes nine objects related with cemetery function. The most important is the Chapels and Mortuary building, which has basement and ground floor with useful area of 2685,40 m2. The Regulation Plan placed the chapel along the main complex axis and at the central square. The footpath leads from the central cemetery square proceeding to the main Chapel. The access road leads into an economic courtyard placed on the back side of the chapels and mortuary building. Design: Function of these objects requires introverted architecture of shadows and closeness, which derived the design of the building. Chambers dedicated for paying respect to the dead and for mourning are discreetly lit up and the mood in the mortuary is set by the warm colour of the wood enclosing walls and sacred character due to the avoidance of a direct view to the outside. Their sacredness is accented by the roof lights. The main entrance is accented by a canopy which is exceeded to the building regulation line. The main corridors in the object are in form of ramps, and therefore easy accessible. Facade is clad by a local material-sa tone called PLIVIT with light brown and light gray colour and horizontal bar pattern. CEMETERY CHAPELS AND MORTUARY BUILDING Vrbanja, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina; July 2008. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 003
  • 4. Architecture COMPETITION DESIGN_THE HALL OF SPORTS WITH THE CONFERENCE CENTRE _3th Award The design concept was to establish changeable and dynamic multifunctional space. Accent has been put on the motion. Movement inside the object was accomplished by ramps. It is a diagrammatic symbol of a movement on the main court and it´s changes of intensity and level of the game. The External cladding and the internal bridges are from GKD steel sliding panels, that gives changeable appearance to the building allowing constant change of lightning. The Concrete structure of the building is connected with a ceiling construction above the sports hall which is made off steel trusses. The entrance hall is connected with the restaurant and the conference hall. Above this block are the judges and delegates rooms, which are accessed by the internal bridges, and connected with a journalist’s box. The entrance into ancillary rooms is from the back side of the building. Those rooms are differentiated by position and height, contributing to dynamic outer appearance. COMPETITION DESIGN FOR THE HALL OF SPORTS WITH THE CONFERENCE CENTRE, Orašje, Bosnia and Herzegovina; November 2007. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 004
  • 5. Architecture COMPETITION DESIGN FOR THE LIBRARY EXTENSION The extension of the library building had to be fit into the strict site conditions of the protected central city area. The form of the building is derived from the building function itself as reminiscent of books on a shelf. Introverted form of the street facade and opened courtyard facade accentuate the concept. The External cladding is made of corten steel plates, using the colour that prevails on surrounding buildings. The main entrance is trough the existing passage leading in an atrium between two buildings that besides communications contains a reading stairs and exhibition area. The facade of the old building towards the atrium is glazed. The ground floor is used as a children´s library and the first floor is used for the science library and the reading room, both connected to the main building through the central corridor. COMPETITION DESIGN FOR THE LIBRARY EXTENSION, Novi Sad, Serbia; December 2011. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 005
  • 6. Architecture STUDENT WORK: MUSEUM OF SPORTS Context: The Location predicted for the Museum of Sports is in Blok 26 at New Belgrade. Simplified lines represent homage to the nearby monument of Modern architecture- Federation building, and a wired ball clad with steel foil symbolize ball associated with the Belgrade Arena across street. The basic concept of the design is creation of a low horizontal volume with sculptures inside and outside the museum, which contributes to the building and garden continuity. The entrance is accented by a concrete panel and with a concrete wall which introduces visitors into the building and simultaneously separates a service and the main entrance. Glass facade has been pulled in under a cantilever. The entrance hall is the place for overall orientation. The ground floor is intended to be for temporary exhibitions while the subfloor is for permanent exhibitions. Movement through exhibitions is circular. Mobile partition panels contribute to flexibility of space. The Building form is linear, simplified and could be elongated in the future. Differentiation between the service and the public part of the object has been accentuated through the use of different materials. MUSEUM OF SPORTS Belgrade,Serbia; Final project February 2007. Student: Dragana B. Mihic 006
  • 7. Architecture OFFICE BUILDING DERVENTA The object is placed on the site of an existing office building at the entrance into small Meat processing centre, which has been devastated during the civil war. Part of the existing building structure will be used according to existing scheme as individual offices. A separated building for the entrance control is associated with main building and cantilevered. The entrance hall has double height. The first floor is arranged as an open- plan office due to the request for flexibility, with a separated restaurant on the roof terrace. Solid form of the restaurant facade accentuates different usage from the rest of the building. OFFICE BUILDING, Derventa, Bosnia and Herzegovina; March 2007. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 007
  • 8. Architecture LAND REGISTRATION OFFICE BUILDING KOTOR VAROS The reconstruction of an old temporary prison unit into a land registration office was performed according to specific standards related to this buildings. The task was to transform a devastated object with defined outer form and non-representative appearance into a public office. In parallel to the interior reconstruction and adjustment to the change of use, the remodelling of the building outer form was conducted by cutting narrow windows on the front facade and by shortening the roof extensions over the walls, adding the ramp and the structure above. The new look obviously reflects the public use of the building. LAND REGISTRATION OFFICE BUILDING, Kotor Varos, Bosnia and Herzegovina; July 2008. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 008
  • 9. Architecture AFFORDABLE HOUSING DERVENTA The house is planned on the very small parcel at a street crossing with an irregular building line. The building plan is envisaged as an intersection of two rectangular forms cutting each other under 15 degrees angle. The project predicted a garage on the basement level, using only half of the parcel. The ground floor is the largest level of the house accommodating the SE oriented living room, a combined dinning room and a kitchen. The main entrance is from northern side of the building next to the bathroom and the staircase. Irregular form of the ground floor is abandoned on the first floor where rectangular shape of the building is kept, while the irregular parts form the terraces and a roof garden. The main rectangular cube of the building was followed by a wooden cladding on the facades. AFFORDABLE HOUSING, Derventa, Bosnia and Herzegovina; March 2013. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 009
  • 11. Urban planning STUDY FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE RIVER UNA BANKS The River Una outlines many extraordinary natural forms through her entire flow, therefore is considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. Urban planning included definition of boundaries of the protected area of the twelve-kilometre river coast length through Bihać. The zoning inside the protected area is made based on the analyses of the current planning documentation and by valorisation of found conditions. The regimes of the protection and the permissible interventions are defined for every zone. Detail conditions are defined inside the protective area and the contact zones. The Study includes the measures for the protection and revival of the river Una banks and the river bed. A pedestrian foot-path was conducted in 3-5 meters width on the ground and partially above the river depending on the particular site conditions. Along the path many activities are introduced, such as open theatre, touristic stops, panorama sites, info points, fishing stops, beaches. The most valuable contribution of this Study is animation and simultaneously protection of the river and the riverside. STUDY FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE RIVER UNA BANKS, Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina; September 2007. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 011
  • 12. Urban planning LSL GLAVATI-PRCANJ Local study of location for Glavati - Prcanj is prepared for 24 ha of Prcanj, settlement in Boka Kotorska. The plan is based on conservation principles and protects revalorized values of this part of Boka Gulf. Main contribution of the document is establishment of two separate construction zones and construction free area of St.Ana´s valley. This way helps to protect one of the last preserved historic ambient of isolated summer palaces with family church that belongs to old Kotor´s family Sbutega. Separate conditions are defined for reconstruction of old stone houses and for new constructions. Significant contribution is establishment of the special building rules for neighbouring buildings around cultural monuments and old stone houses. LSL GLAVATI-PRCANJ Kotor,Montenegro 2009 – 2011 Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 012
  • 13. Urban planning DUP PRCANJ Detail urban development plan prepared for 95 ha of Prcanj, settlement in Boka Kotorska. The settlement is characterized by its longitudinal line of houses along the sea coast. The cross section of the settlement is characterized by three separated belts, the urban coast houses, the rural area behind and the forest area at the top of the hill. The Coast line formed of the old stone houses is separated as Block 1 and isolated with a belt of greenery to emphasize this area. Strict building conditions and protected zones are defined in Block four, just beside the Holy Mary temple, the focal point of the bay. This block has lower buildings, partially rural in character. A Recreation zone is defined next to the school´s courtyard related to an existing sport pitch. This zone is on a half way between two major touristic locations. Major innovation is a road above the settlement, whose function is to replace the existing coast road whose traffic disables approach to the narrow strip of beaches and puts the architectural heritage of Prcanj in danger. This new road would connect nearby settlements and should allow pedestrian use of the coast road. Intention of this plan is to protects existing values and at the same time helps economic and touristic development. DUP PRCANJ Kotor,Montenegro 2009 – 2011 Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 013
  • 14. Urban planning DUP DONJI ORAHOVAC DUP DRAZIN VRT Detail urban development plan is prepared for 81 ha of two Boka settlements. Drazin vrt is a small village and every intervention should be planned very carefully, hence only minor changes are suggested, such as more functional road and only a few new buildings. The Touristic settlement is planned as an ECO lodge village. DUP Orahovac keeps main guidelines from the existing plan. Entirely new is a bicycle path across the hill that add richness in mountaineers' tours and provides access to until now inaccessible forest area. DUP DONJI ORAHOVAC DUP DRAZIN VRT Kotor,Montenegro 2009 – 2011 Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 014
  • 15. Urban planning URBAN SQUARE The urban workshop in Tirana was held under the guidance of NGO organisations and Universities from Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania. The project task was finding a locatin inside given urban area, which has potential to become a meeting place, or a terciary center of the neighburhood, a new urban square. The square shape and its structure is result of the adjacent influences, the site condition, activities or potential activities. The resulting urban sculpture acumulates all that factors and becomes generator of activities. The square location is on the pedestrian crossroad, but at the same time it creates impresion of a hidden garden in a contemporary city. REVIVAL OF URBAN SQUARES IN BALKAN CITIES Tirana, ALBANIA 2011 Design: Dragana Mihic, Nikola Nikolovski,Fiona Imami 015
  • 17. Interior BATHROOM RECONSTRUCTION Bathroom design had goal to improve bathroom comfort, organise necessary storage space and improve functionality. Main accent is on the so called cosmetic area. This area consists of a sink that is built in a console slab, shelves and storage units. The large slab area from time to time becomes a cosmetic table, and mobile storage cubes are used as seats. Part of the floor was elevated and framed with floor and wall bordure, contributing to visual separation of toilet area and forming a stair used for window access. Mobile cubes with wheels dim.40x40x40 cm are used as bathroom storage, while one of them, with the top cover, is used for laundry. All of the bathroom furniture is custom designed. Due to number of users (family of five), hydro massage shower has been set, in order to reduce the time of bathroom usage. Windows are made of anodized aluminium with sanded glass. Ceiling light is linear and track the floor bordure. BATHROOM RECONSTRUCTION Derventa January 2007. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 017
  • 18. Interior RESTAURANT „AD LADIOS“, Interior of the restaurant „Ad Ladios“ is result of complete transformation of an existent cafe-bar, that was in extremely bad condition. The Owner wanted to get peaceful and warm ambient for dining and drinking of coffee, using mixture of traditional and contemporary design elements. To achieve this goal, warm colours, as beige and cacao, were used in combination with wood and wrought iron. To get isolated entities, part of the floor area is lifted. The wood strips on the ceiling connect interior and garden, and emphasize the walking line. The existent dark space with small windows and walls clad with wood has been lit up by enlarged windows and light wall colours. Floor is in combination of wood and ceramic tiles. RESTAURANT „AD LADIOS“, Trn; Banja Luka, June 2007. Architect : Dragana B. Mihic 018
