No One Should Die
Without Donating Blood.

Due to Lack of Blood.
All Ethical Efforts to Achieve this Motto
is
JUSTIFIED.

Three Incidences that led to the topic of
Philanthropy V/s Professionals
1. Some of the Philanthropists and Social Workers
consider themselves above the law because of
political approach.
2. American Red Cross was fined $ 4.5 and 6.5
mil. for not following proper criteria for Vol.
Blood Donor Selection. (in 2005 & 2006)
3. New Blood Banks run by corporate sector by
professionals.

• Blood transfusion is a complex science
that links healthy blood donor with the
ailing patient in quest of a new lease of
life with various intermediaries and a
system.
We need humanitarian
as well as
scientific ethical approach.

7. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• Initially blood banks were managed by
Philanthropist either from medical field or by
Social Workers from various fields.
• These Philanthropists were either Medical
Persons or Social Workers, e.g. Dr. Mavlankar
at Ahmedabad and Mrs. Moolgaonkar at
Mumbai, who where successful in creating a
social awareness, before 1970.

• In 1980 in West Bengal ,
Dr. Labanyakumar Ganguli, an Eminent Medical
Educationalist (who started North Bengal Medical
College), along with
Mr. Arunabha Chattopadhyay and Debabrata Ray,
one Electrical & other Mechanical Engineer,
started Association of Voluntary Blood Donors -
West Bengal.
• All had Philanthropic ideas of giving selfless
service to the society.

9. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• All these people have started their
activities voluntarily.
or
• in other words they have taken up a social
responsibility with the aim of helping needy
people without any expectation of making
an earning out of these activities.
• A Self Assigned Responsibility.

10. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• These philanthropic ideas have resulted in
charitable blood banks collecting blood
from voluntary blood donors and providing
blood either free or at low cost.

11. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• With the beginning of ISBTI (1973), initiated by Dr.
Jolly and Mrs. Swaroopkrishna from Chandigadh,
a new era of Transfusion Medicine started.
• ISBTI was formed with a basic idea of including
the so called Philanthropist and Social Workers in
the main national stream as Indian Society of
Haematology and Blood Transfusion (ISHBT)
included only medical doctors and technicians.

12. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• With the introduction of Diploma and Master degree
courses in Transfusion Medicine or Ph.D. with
Transfusion Medicine subjects, a new crop of
Professionals came in management of blood banks.
• They were either newly inducted in blood bank
officers to look after technical sides or in some
blood banks replaced in place of existing MBBS
doctors, who were very often retired medical
practitioners.

13. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• To help these medical professionals there are
ready candidates with Masters degrees in
Business Management (MBA) or Social Work
(MSW) to run the blood banks more
professionally.
• These new MBAs started taking over
management of blood banks from the so called
Social Workers or Philanthropists.

That is the beginning of
Philanthropists
V/S
Professionals.

14
15. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• With the introduction of mandatory HIV testing in
1989 by FDCA and the Supreme Court verdict in
1996,
- it has become clear that the blood banks
need Professionals to run blood bank activities.
or
- a move toward Professionalism has become
obligatory.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, PatialaI
Italia et al., Valsad Raktdan Kendra
15
16. ValsadRaktdanKendra
Later on it became a MUST……. that
We need professional approach to maintain the
quality of blood,
• not only to manufacture different components
but
• also to make it safer in terms of transfusion
transmitted diseases and also in terms of low
immunological consequences.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, PatialaI
Italia et al., Valsad Raktdan Kendra
16
17. ValsadRaktdanKendra
Failing of Philanthropists and Social
Workers to provide or develop a better
Transfusion Services or a better approach
to adopt concept of 100 % safe blood
transfusion by 100 % disease free and
‘Zero” error, has resulted in a deterioration
of Quality Services of blood banks.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, PatialaI

17
18. ValsadRaktdanKendra
We also know that as such
Blood Transfusion is Hazardous.
Hence
Judicial Use of Blood Product is a Must.

18
19. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• To guide our end users of blood (doctors), we
also need well qualified professional, who can
guide them with appropriate use of blood
components
and
• can assure them of better and safer blood
products (by testing like 4th generation ELISA or
NAT Testing or Leuco-reduced blood products,
etc.)
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, PatialaI

20. ValsadRaktdanKendra
Looking at all these prerequisite
Professional is an obligatory.

21. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• But to achieve all of these best qualities,
we need THE BEST raw material.
And that is where the importance of
Non-remunerated regular/repeat
Voluntary Blood Donor
comes in picture.

Voluntary Blood Donor
The word Voluntary
is once again attached to
Philanthropy.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, PatialaI

22
23. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• The voluntary blood donation drive is
proportionate to the Philanthropic
activities run by blood bank.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, PatialaI
Italia et al., Valsad Raktdan Kendra
23
24. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• What are the parameters of
Philanthropic Activities?
Unfortunately
• The philanthropic activities are gauged
by free blood units provided to needy
poor patients and at what low cost it is
provided to general public.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, Patiala
Italia et al., Valsad Raktdan Kendra
24
25. ValsadRaktdanKendra
• The ideas of philanthropist of low cost and free blood
supply, might result in poor management of blood
banks and inferior quality of blood products putting
recipients into more trouble during the transfusion or
for future transfusions.
• While the so called better quality products may
become out of reach of common persons.
………The cost of one blood unit ranges from free to Rs.
200/- at charitable blood banks to Rs. 4,500/- in
corporate hospital blood banks.

25
26. ValsadRaktdanKendra
Very often to maintain the cost low, the staff is
underpaid, resulting in a deterioration of blood
bank services.
Please note
The Philanthropist / Trustees
may be doing charities
but
the staff has to earn for their family.
They should not depend on other’s charity.
They must be paid respectable salary.

We have to consider
Strengths & Weaknesses
of
Philanthropists as well as Professionals.
29. ValsadRaktdanKendra
Strengths of Philanthropists:
• Philanthropic approach
– enjoys people’s faith
• Dedication
• More Contacts with Community Based
Organizations (CBOs)
• Flexibility
• Low cost products for common man

29
30. ValsadRaktdanKendra
Strengths of Professionals:
• Better Scientific approach
• More Quality Conscious
• Better Training to Blood Bank staff
• ??????
- a lot more they will argue.

Education
and
Training
of Staff & Volunteers
is fundamental.
Evidence indicates that India is
unable to meet their identified
training needs in both
× Quality of training
&
× Quality of staff performance
This includes training for
Volunteers and Social Workers
in blood banks.
Certain Facts:
32. ValsadRaktdanKendra

32
The Attitude of the Staff Plays a Major Role.
( Approach Like a Corporate Office or a Call Center)
A Courteous Welcome, Ever Willing to Help Attitude with Soft Words
and a Gentle Request Turns Patient’s Relatives & Friends into
Voluntary Blood Donors.
33. ValsadRaktdanKendra
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, Patiala

33
Lack of Professional approach of the staff
• Many blood bank staff members are unwilling
to leave their families to attend training
programs. Some have received inadequate
training in the past & work under limited
supervision.
• Some of the blood banks have no dedicated
staff for Blood Donation Drive.
34. ValsadRaktdanKendra
MIND WELL
Blood Bank should realize that
money and time
spent for all these training is
an Investment and not an Expense.
28 February 2015 TRANSCON 2014, Patiala, October 2014
Italia et al., Valsad Raktdan Kendra
34
35. ValsadRaktdanKendra
We need a balance in both.
The Professionals should respect the ideas of
philanthropists and their dedication to the noble
cause
and
It is time for philanthropists to understand the
need of a professional for better quality of blood
and for better safety of the recipient.

Don't know where I heard it:
• Love or hate me
but never try to change me!!!
• Behavioral change is
most Difficult
………but a MUST.
Attitude of Professionals & Philanthropists
towards Better Approach for Development for
Overall All Blood Bank Activity MUST Change.
