This is a presentation I made to parents at the "Parents as Partners" conference. I sought to provide an overview of some social emotional learning skills and to tie them to our respective cultural practices.

- Social-Emotional Learning Skills: Empowering our children and our culture What is Social Emotional Learning? How does it help all students make academic gains? This presentation will provide an overview of social emotional learning and the role all adults have in developing effective social emotional learning skills so student may realize their full potential.
- Bandura’s social learning theory posits that students acquire knowledge through observation of attitudes, actions, and behaviors of others culture is the lens that interprets motives, thoughts, and behaviors of others and therefore should be viewed as the general framework through which the daily actions of an individual will be filtered or checked actions of children who are culturally and linguistically different from the mainstream culture were often “misperceived and judged unfairly”
- The belief that one’s abilities can grow with effort. See effort as needed for success Embrace challenges, Learn from Criticism Persist in face of setbacks A Growth Mindset may contribute to a willingness to take on new challenges Children who do not believe that they can get smarter-who think that intelligence is fixed do not have a growth mindset Praise effort Reward diligence Reframe language Put it into practice- A, B,C, R
- The belief in one’s own ability to succeed in achieving an outcome or reaching a goal. Self Efficacy reflects confidence in one's ability to control or manage one's motivation, behavior, and environment. The belief in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to reach specific goals Projects that are both sequenced and active Simple version of the task that student CAN do Practice Self Advocacy Going though the problem/project in a specific order Doing not listening Start with part of the problem and build on success
- The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, to understand social and ethical norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports. Focus on specific social skills Exposure to difference Model ,Target, Practice Empathy, Inclusion Cultural Proficiency Civic Engagement Model the skill Explicitly identify the skill Practice the skill
- The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. Manage stress, delay gratification Self motivate, set goals Children with poor self management skills are often those who disrupt instruction Explicit instruction in time management Explicit instruction in anger management Protocols for social interaction Model and Practice
