characteristics of high-

relationships and culture,
rather than just the task at
hand.”
8. The purposeless team
• A team without a clear and compelling purpose
gets side-tracked easily and frequently.
• The purposeless team is busy working on
activity that isn’t always useful and neglects
tasks pivotal to its purpose.
9.
10. As team leader, you
should consider these
seven questions:
1. Do I know my team’s purpose?
2. Have I communicated this purpose to all
team members?
3. Do my team members understand its
purpose and their role?
4. Do all team members accept the purpose?
5. Are all team members committed to the
purpose?
6. Do all team members know how their
work is tracking against the team’s
purpose?
7. Am I supporting my team to achieve the
team purpose?
11. Three
famous
purpose
statements
• To refresh the world in body, mind and spirit. (Coke Cola)
• Apple is committed to bringing the best personal computing
experience to students, educators, creative professionals and
consumers around the world through its innovative hardware,
software and Internet offerings. (Apple)

13. Team Values
Charter
1. What is one value that is important to
you when working in groups and
teams? e.g., respect.
2. What is your definition of that value?
e.g., respect is when people are
prepared to listen to others, even when
they may not agree with their point-of-
view.
3. Why is that value important to you?
e.g., I like to feel that I am respected
and my opinions valued when working
with others.
4. What behaviours would be consistent
with this value? e.g., not interrupting
someone else when they speak.
