Dr. Priti Sonar has over 14 years of teaching experience and 7 years of administrative experience. She holds a Ph.D. and several other educational qualifications. She was formerly a member of the Board of Studies at SNDT Women's University. The document discusses the importance of both freedom and discipline in a child's development. While freedom allows for self-development and exploring interests, discipline helps cultivate human and moral qualities to become a cooperative, tolerant member of society. It argues that both are needed, as freedom inspires initiative but discipline provides structure and responsibility.

8. Children can only âbehaveâ when strict discipline is
imposed on them, meaning their freedom taken
awayâ this is the thinking of traditional schooling.

9. This inner discipline takes much
longer to achieve than it does to
simply tell a child âsit down! Be
quiet!â Using threats of punishment.

Importance of freedom
10. Importance of freedom
âą For the full development of a childâs individuality, full freedom
is essential.
âą In the absence of this freedom, a childâs physical, mental,
moral, artistic and spiritual development according to his
inherent tendencies will not be possible.
âą It has been observed that in a controlled environment a child
finds it difficult to act freely according to his interests and
needs.
âą He finds no interest in those activities which are imposed
upon him.
âą On the other hand, if full freedom is provided to him, then he
acts with interest in spirit of play.
11. Importance of freedom
âą Freedom inspires a child proper initiative,
interest, fearlessness and a sense of
responsibility.
âą Freedom enables self-development and
advancement.
12. Importance of Discipline
âą Development of human and moral qualities are
essential.
âą These qualities make a child cultured and civilized
for the purpose of leading oneâs life happily and
also contributing to the welfare of the society.
âą it is discipline which makes an individual a dynamic,
co-operative, sympathetic and tolerant citizen
imbued with social ideals of service and sacrifice at
the cost of his own self interests.
13. how can you give kids freedom
and still have discipline, or be
disciplined and have freedom?
14. Both Freedom and Discipline:
âą From the above discussion it is clear that both
freedom and discipline are essential for the
proper fullest development of a child. It is to be
noted that freedom and discipline are both based
on two ancient philosophical doctrines. Freedom
is based on naturalism while Idealism is the
foundation of discipline.
