Normally, if you have power whitening carried out in dental surgery, you would immediately
expect to achieve a 4 shade increase in your teeth being whiter. After a week, there would
be some fade back which always occurs with any whitening system, and the shade would

If on the other hand, you carried out home tooth whitening with a dentist-approved teeth
whitening system, after approximately 2 weeks, you would expect a 3 shade increase in the
whiteness of your teeth.
With this system, that we reviewed, the shade increase immediately afterwards was at one
shade increasing brightness. It is important to bear in mind that with any system that
dehydrates your teeth, the teeth will always increase in lightness. This immediate increase is
purely due to the enamel of your teeth becoming dehydrated. However, after a day or two,
your teeth will go back to their original colour as if there has been no change in lightness.
This is the reason why we also measured the shade after 1-week. With this system, after
one week the shade increase was only one-quarter of an increase in lightness. This is barely
perceptible and unsatisfactory in our view.
The marketing jargon says that charcoal has absorptive properties but that does not mean
that it can effectively lift out enamel stains or even if it has any effect. They also talk about a
“special gel” but don’t tell you what is in this special gel or why it’s special.

● There are reports of charcoal being too abrasive and wearing your teeth away.
● They also talk about “detoxifying your teeth and gums” which is nonsense.
● The toothbrushes supplied became soft within a few days and the bristles splayed
out so much that they had to be put in the rubbish bin.
● After using it, the teeth “seemed” lighter but that was only because they looked black
when the charcoal paste was on your teeth. In reality, there was no effect or very
minimal. The minimal effect was due to the abrasiveness of the charcoal which is not
good for the protective enamel coating of your teeth.
