3. Introduction
• Most students dream to complete their
degree(s) and get a good job!
• FACT-There are fewer job openings and a vast
number of job seekers.
• Therefore, leaving many graduates
disheartened about their future.
4. How do people get hired?
• Degrees are necessary but insufficient!
• Resumes are necessary but you have to do more!
• Did your know: 80% of all job openings never get
posted!
Why?
• Because most people get hired through personal
contacts.
• People hire who they know about…
5. Becoming a warm contact
• Most people get work because they know
someone.
• So warm contacts are becoming the thing of
the future.
• I know this is not what you want to hear…
• But you can become a warm contact and
succeed, as we all have to start from
somewhere!
6. What are employers looking for?
• Ordinary people willing
show their EXTRA
Ordinary Abilities.
• You need to go beyond
what you have learnt at
university and be willing
to take on whatever is
needed for you to get to
where you want.
• Of course this needs to be
done with integrity
10. Career Goals
• Identify what will make you an attractive candidate.
• Don’t be side tracked, stick to realistic goals!
• Begin to look at what you can bring to a company
• You may want to be employed or start up your own
business.
• What ever it is be clear and consistent.
• Create a detailed picture of what your goal is and be
prepared to do what you need to do!
• Be determined that you will succeed.
• Avoid being complacent.
• Be sure to spend time researching and planning the
steps to help you reach you goals.
11. Long and Short term goals
• Short-term goals are the milestones you need
to reach in order to get to where you want
• Don’t get overwhelmed!
• Imagine each steps that you need to take are
small, where you are learning along the way.
• Don’t fast track you experiences.
• Be driven enough to be able to do all the
things you need to do, and recommit to your
goals.
12. What you need to do?
To make yourself employable and marketable
consider:
1. Taking up working Projects
2. Finding a Mentor
3. Securing work experiences or internships
4. Forming and sustaining professional
networks
But first…. Identify your skills

1. Where you are right now?
2. Where you want to be?
3. What you want from your career?
4. What you like to do?
5. What are your strengths?
6. How do my skills match with the
occupation that I am interested
in?
15. Resume
• Written English is a very different form of
communication from spoken English, its almost a
different language!
• People understand what we mean, but when we
write, we need to use words that are more
descriptive.
• Before you send it, read it aloud. Or tape it and
listen back.
• Resume gives a snap shot about you. So it’s
important you make a good impression.
16. Take Control and Take Action
What will help you achieve your professional
goals? (training, networking etc.)
Identify who you need to support you with
these goals (Tutor, mentor, family or friends )
This will help you devise a plan to help you
explore your options further (such as work
experience, work shadowing or more research).

1. Understand where you are
2. Decide on where you want to be
3. Make the changes and adjustments necessary to
get you there.
