Statement of Teaching Philosophy
As a learner and educator who has and continues to experience many of the benefits of receiving an
online education, I value life-long learning, student/learner-centered teaching, incorporation of personal
and professional experience into the learning process, utilization of different learning methods, strategies
and computer based technology to address diversity of learning levels and styles.
It is my belief that the learning process never ends. In my teaching and mentoring experiences, I have
done my best to show through actions this philosophy. Learning is an experience and the most
impressionable teachers that I have encountered were successful in creating an atmosphere in which I
could experience the learning process. Therefore, it is my goal to create a learning atmosphere in which
each student can experience learning and leave the classroom inspired to continue the life-long journey
of learning.
The classroom should foster an atmosphere of personal and professional exploration. Students should
be encouraged to explore where they have been and their desired destination. Each class is a stepping
stone to their destination. I believe that the incorporation of personal and professional experiences is
vitally important to successful learning. Each student is an extension of their cultural, social,
psychological and biological backgrounds. This is an element of learning that should not be suppressed
but encouraged in the classroom. By encouraging the use of personal and professional life experiences
in the classroom, each student experiences learning on a greater level. The teacher is only able to teach
from their knowledge base. For this reason, it is important that the teacher take the role of facilitator so
that the students are able to gain knowledge from the experiences of each individual in the classroom. By
utilizing the personal and professional experiences of all students in the classroom, the instructor is able
to assist each student in acquiring the learning experience that they deserve. In addition, utilizing
different learning methods and strategies as well as taking advantage of various computer based
technologies ensures that the learning needs of all learners are addressed and increases the likelihood of
learner retention and success.
