3. What are allergies?
a damaging immune response by
the body to a substance which it
has become hypersensitive to
*substance
Dander
Mold
Pollen
4. Who do allergies affect?
Allergies affect over 50 million
Americans
Common symptoms:
Congestion
Runny nose
Itchy eyes
Sneezing
Severe symptoms:
Skin reactions
Asthma
5. Economic Cost
$17.5 billion on allergy treatments
Over 6 million work and school days lost
16 million visits to their doctor
$25 billion each year for food allergies alone
6. The Immune System
Our defense against harmful
substances that can make us sick
Responsible for allergies and
hypersensitivity reactions in the
body
7. Immune System
The immune system is made up of
cells that :
look for harmful substances
target harmful organism or
substances
release chemical mediators that
trigger the inflammatory response
and eliminate the threat
8. Sensitization
Every immune response begins with
sensitization
Sensitization is the first exposure
to an allergen that lead to the
production of antibodies.
When exposed to the allergen
again the person will trigger and
allergic reaction (IgE)
The body’s way of remembering
the allergen so it can launch an
immune response
9. Hypersensitivity
A state of altered reactivity when
the body responds (reacts) with an
exaggerated immune response to a
foreign substance
12. Inflammation and Allergies
The body uses inflammation to isolate and get rid of threats
When you have underlying inflammation due to poor diet, smoking, alcohol
use your body becomes more sensitive to allergens.
13. Healthy Immunity Begins Before Birth
Studies have shown that children
with allergies have different
bacteria in their gut than healthy
children.
Children get their bacteria from
their mothers.
Bacterial imbalances lead to an
increased risk of allergies and
asthma
19. Probiotics
90% of the immune system in the gut
Probiotics are important for immune system health and some organisms have
been shown to stop immune cells from releasing inflammatory chemicals
When it comes to probiotics pick food sources first
Not a quick fix
20. Probiotic Studies
Children with allergies have different gut bacteria than healthy children.
Healthy children: Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium
Unhealthy children:

Disorders: An Update from Laboratory and Clinical Data. “Clinical and
Experimental Immunology 160.3 (2010): 295-304 PMC. Web 10 Mar 2017
21. Probiotic Studies
Probiotics have been shown to reduce the release of inflammatory chemicals
and improve intestinal permeability
Prevents sensitization
Probiotics may be beneficial in reducing symptom severity, decreasing
medication use and reducing IgE

A Meta-Analysis of Clinical Trials. Pediatrics Aug 2013.Peds.2013-0246;

22. Probiotic Studies
Probiotics significantly reduced the incidence ad duration of respiratory tract
infection symptoms
G Leyer et al Effects on Cold and Influenza like symptoms Incidence and
Duration in Children. Pediatrics Aug 2009. 124 (12) e172-e179; DOI

Another study (over 300 children) found probiotics use as a safe and effective way
to decrease fever, runny nose, and cough
Decreased need for antibiotics
Decreased # of missed school and work days due to illness

tract infection symptoms in 3- 5-year-old children. Pediatric Jan 2008
