Chemicals used in Meth Manufacture
Donald W. Reid 2017 1
Most of the chemicals associated with producing meth
can be grouped into the following distinct categories
with similar toxic and physical properties:
1. solvents
2. metals and salts
3. strong acids or bases
Regardless of the production method (there are several
methods used to produce meth), chemicals in each of
these groups are used.
Donald W. Reid 2017 2
Methamphetamine is a synthetic analogue of adrenaline.
Adrenalin is a naturally produced hormone the body
produces in small amounts when reacting to an immediate
stress. The hormone and the drug that mimics it increases
energy and alertness when we need a short burst to escape
immediate danger. The difference between the two is that
the naturally secreted adrenalin quickly clears our systems
and we recover. Meth can last 6 to 8 hours or longer.
Effects
Donald W. Reid 2017 3
Methamphetamine, when inhaled, gives the user an extreme,
overwhelming sense of euphoria, power, and seemingly
boundless energy. Ideas come in a flash, conversation quickens,
and sexual arousal is heightened; lights and colors seem
brighter, the heart beat speeds up and the person becomes
restless with nervous intensity. It is sometimes used to instill
confidence in social situations and an oral tablet, Yaba (a mix of
caffeine and meth) has become popular at clubs and raves.
Donald W. Reid 2017 4
This wonderful feeling quickly fades and the user crashes.
The crash comes from the user’s body paying the price for
the super‐charged meth state. Fatigue and depression are
the common elements. Users may sleep for extended
periods unless they have become dependent on the drug, in
which case they will awaken and begin a cycle of craving
and drug seeking behavior. Extended periods of use, called
‘tweaking’, will force an addict to keep using more and more
of the drug. They will stay awake and tweaked for days or
even a week at a time. An episode may only end when they
are arrested or hospitalized for psychotic, violent behavior
or when their body simply cannot function any longer.
Donald W. Reid 2017 5
from methamphetamine abuse can come in a
variety of forms – severe anorexia, hyperthermia,
convulsions, or cardiac collapse. Unfortunately, it is
the loved ones of the addict who usually suffer
first. Meth addiction is a noted cause of family
violence because the aggression and irritability felt
by addicts is usually directed at a spouse or
children.
Signs of Abuse
Donald W. Reid 2017 6
Meth mouth
an accelerated tooth decay and tooth loss is associated with
chronic meth use. The drug itself doesn’t directly cause the
problem, rather, the dry mouth and teeth grinding from meth
use, along with poor oral hygiene, lead to the condition.
Donald W. Reid 2017 7
Meth Sores
One of the most striking effects of meth is the change in the
physical appearance of meth users. Because meth causes the
blood vessels to constrict, it cuts off the steady flow of blood to
all parts of the body. Heavy usage can weaken and destroy these
vessels, causing tissues to become prone to damage and
inhibiting the body's ability to repair itself. Acne appears, sores
take longer to heal, and the skin loses its luster and elasticity.
Some users are covered in small sores, the result of obsessive
skin‐picking brought on by the hallucination of having bugs
crawling beneath the skin, a disorder known as formication.

Gravel
Aka: Flakka, Flocka
Donald W. Reid 2017 10
Gravel is a highly addictive synthetic stimulant that is
similar to bath salts. The primary component of
GRAVEL is alpha-pyrrolidinopentiophenone (alpha-
PVP), it is very often combined with other drugs or
chemicals. It has been reported that Gravel has been
found to contain methamphetamine, Klonopin, bath
salts, rat poison, ammonia and ammonium nitrate.
Gravel is said to cost between $80 and $200 a gram.
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 11
Gravel is found in a form similar to
small rocks or pieces of salt and is
injected or smoked.
Donald W. Reid 2017 12
Short-term effects of Gravel abuse are:
• Extreme paranoia,
• increased blood pressure,
• elevated heart rate,
• violence,
• hallucinations
• and brain damage.
long term effects are unknown at this time.
Hospitals have reported a serious deterioration in
physical appearance after consistent abuse of the drug.
Effects
Donald W. Reid 2017 13
Users have said that the
injection of Gravel can result in
the deterioration of the tissue in
and around the injection site
leaving gaping holes in the body
tissue that can be inches deep.
This picture may not be caused by gravel. The
proof and evidence that this happens due to
gravel drug use has not been found yet and is
unverified. Keep this in mind. It was shared as
part of a users information of the drug not as
actual fact.

Some are taking this trend a step further by
soaking paper towels in coffee, letting the paper
towel dry, cutting the paper towel into smaller
strips, and smoking it. Caffeine pills or powder can
also be used.
Freebasing caffeine produces a high comparable to
one produced by crack cocaine, since both are
central nervous system stimulants. The onset of the
high when freebasing caffeine is immediate, but
the duration of the high is lesser than that of
cocaine.

Kratom
Donald W. Reid 2017 21
Kratom is derived from the Mitragyna Speciosa plant
indigenous to Southeast Asia, primarily in Thailand. This
plant consists of a psychotropic molecule called
Mitragynine that’s been reported to produce both
stimulant and sedative effects, depending on the
dosage. Kratom is purportedly a stimulant at lower doses
with effects to include alertness, physical energy,
talkativeness and giddiness. With higher doses, Kratom
mimics an opiate with sedative effects and euphoria.
These effects are usually felt within 5–10 minutes after
ingestion and the high can last from 2–5 hours.
Donald W. Reid 2017 22
Negative side effects include nausea, sweating, itching, dry
mouth and constipation. Long-term use can potentially result
in anorexia, insomnia, weight loss and in some cases
psychotic episodes, such as confusion, delusions and
hallucinations. “Long-term daily high dose kratom
consumption is also reported to induce nervousness,
sleeplessness, loss of libido, constipation and the darkening of
skin complexion,” Kratom.com says in its "dangerous effects"
section.
Donald W. Reid 2017 23
Side Effects
Although there have been no fatalities from kratom, "The
known risks and dangers of Kratom overdoses include
hallucinations, delusions, listlessness, tremors, aggression,
constipation and nausea," the site said.
The emergency room psychiatrist said the patient who
recently came in reported using kratom several times a day,
every day, "because he discovered that if he stopped it he
started getting withdrawal." The doctor said the man's
symptoms appeared "identical to heroin withdrawal.“
Donald W. Reid 2017 24
Upon arrival, the patient was suffering "severe depression and
anxiety and emerging opiate withdrawal symptoms," including
chills, aching muscles and gooseflesh, the psychiatrist said.
The patient was treated to ease withdrawal symptoms and
then hospitalized, according to the doctor.
Like "bath salts" and "spice" — drugs that are now illegal but
were legal and trendy until law enforcers and medical
researchers gathered data on their dangers — kratom is under
scrutiny, having been added to a Drug Enforcement
Administration's list of "drugs and chemicals of concern."
Donald W. Reid 2017 25
Kratom is typically sold via the
Internet, at convenience stores and
head shops in the form of green
leaves (whole or crushed) and green
powder or pills (capsules). Individuals
can ingest it orally, smoke it or drink it
as a tea when in leaf form. Kratom has
been sold as incense with labels on
the package stating “not for human
consumption,” resembling the
packaging and marketing common
with Spice and Bath Salts.
Donald W. Reid 2017 26
Online ads listing these types of products can be
found in a variety of locations across the nation.
Prices can range from $15–50 per five-gram packet
or $18–25 for about 50 capsules. The DEA’s Office
of Diversion Control states Kratom is a drug and
chemical of concern with no legitimate medical use,
but it remains legal to sell and use.
Donald W. Reid 2017 27
Kratom is traditionally and commonly consumed as a tea. It is
also consumed in the form of powder packed into capsules.
Some people even cook with kratom, making medicated and
delicious desserts and drinks. Vaporizing it is also effective, as is
smoking it, to a lesser degree. It can not be emphasized enough
that inhalation, insulflation, or snorting of kratom is ill-advised
and ineffective.
Kratom extracts, especially those claiming to be pure alkaloids,
are highly potent and could be powerfully uncomfortable in
doses that are too high. Snorting a powder can lead to damage
to the nasal tissue, nausea, and even unconsciousness.
Donald W. Reid 2017 28
Pump-It Powder
Donald W. Reid 2017 29
This is one of the newest synthetic products on the market sold or
advertised as an “enhanced plant vitamin” with the “not-intended-
for-human-consumption” label on the packaging. One of the primary
ingredients in Pump-It is Geranamine, also known as
Methylhexanamine, which is an amphetamine-related stimulant and
decongestant found naturally in the geranium plant.
Methylhexanamine hasn’t been widely studied and isn’t listed as an
illegal substance under U.S. law. It’s unknown what exact
components manufacturers are putting into synthetic drugs like
Pump-It, which highlights once more the danger products like these
pose to the general population.
Donald W. Reid 2017 30
Overview
Users have reported these products produce effects
similar to other banned substances. More specifically,
signs and symptoms associated with Pump-It use are
consistent with effects seen in stimulant and
hallucinogen drugs: Increased heart rate and body
temperature, dilated pupils, sensory distortions and
psychotic symptoms. The high this product produces will
usually last 4-6 hours with some reports claiming highs
lasting up to 12 hours, depending on the dosage taken.
Donald W. Reid 2017 31
Side Effects
Most users are in the experimental age range,
between 18 and 25.
“Patients will come in acting confused, maybe
hallucinating, seeing things, hearing things, and
acting bizarrely. Sometimes they will have chest
pain or their heart will be racing. It can simulate or
mimic a heart attack,” said Dr. Howard Jarvis,
medical director of the Emergency Department for
Cox Health Systems. “People can die from using
these sorts of things. People have died using these
sorts of things.”
Donald W. Reid 2017 32
This product can be snorted, injected or smoked, and
the onset of effects may be delayed which may lead
to taking more of the contents and increasing the
chances of negative effects. Pump-It has been sold at
gas stations, convenience stores, novelty shops and
on the Internet, and appears to be most popular in
the Midwest states. Pump-It is usually packaged in a
500 mg or 1000 mg tin container and costs around
$30 for a 500 mg.

Benzo Fury
Donald W. Reid 2017 35
SCIENTIFIC TERM
6-(2-aminopropyl) benzofuran or 1-
benzofuran-6-ylpropan-2-amine 6-
APB or Benfamine
STREET NAMES
Benzo Fury, White Pearl
Donald W. Reid 2017 36
Benzo Fury, or 6-APB, is a colorless stimulant, sold in powder and pellet or tablet form,
and is marketed as a “research drug” and “not suitable for human consumption.”
Benzo Fury is chemically similar to amphetamines and ecstasy (MDMA) and produces
effects that mimic these drugs, including alertness, increased energy, euphoria,
feelings of peace and love toward others, dilated pupils, tingling feelings, tightening of
jaw muscles, raised body temperature, increased heart rate, anxiety/panic attacks and
paranoid/confused states. There’s very little research and literature regarding the
nature and effects of Benzo Fury. Benzo Fury is usually consumed in pellet/tablet form,
but can also be snorted.
Donald W. Reid 2017 37
Overview
Benzo Fury is sold primarily
through websites claiming to
be manufacturers or suppliers
of research chemicals. The
website www.benzofury.com
sells Benzo Fury for 10 British
Pounds (around $15-16 U.S.
dollars) per pill/pellet and
shipping to the U.S. is available.
Benzo Fury is unscheduled in
the U.S. and is currently legal in
the United Kingdom.
Donald W. Reid 2017 38
Benzo Fury is chemically similar to amphetamines (like speed)
and to ecstasy, so it’s reasonable to assume that they have
similar effects to those drugs. Hence, people using Benzo Fury
may experience: Feeling very up, alert, chatty and
energised. Being ‘in tune’ with their surroundings and/or with
music and colours feeling more intense. Temporary feelings of
love and affection for the people they're with and for the
strangers around them. Physical effects such as dilated pupils,
tingling feelings, tightening of the jaw muscles, raised body
temperature and the heart beating faster. See the speed and
ecstasy pages for more details.
Donald W. Reid 2017 39
Benzo Fury is chemically similar to
amphetamines (like speed) and to
ecstasy, and so it’s reasonable to
assume it has similar risks to those
drugs. Hence, people using Benzo
Fury may experience: Anxiety,
panic attacks, confused states,
agitation or aggression, paranoid
feelings and even psychosis. A
‘comedown’ that may last a
number of days – with feelings of
lethargy and depressed mood.
Donald W. Reid 2017 40
On 10th June 2013, 5-APB, 6-APB, 5-APDB and 6-APDB was
banned by the Government under a temporary class drug
order. This means that most samples of ‘Benzo Fury’ will
now be illegal and remain illegal for at least 12 months while
drug experts consider their full range of harms. It is
therefore illegal to sell, supply or give away these substances
to friends. If the police suspects that you have a ‘legal high’
which contains a temporary class drug, they can confiscate
the substance and dispose of it.
Donald W. Reid 2017 41
Supplying someone else, including your
friends, can get you fourteen years in jail
and/or an unlimited fine under the Misuse
of Drugs Act 1971. Until recently 'Benzo
Fury' has been sold as a 'legal high'. Benzo
Fury' is actually a brand name, and you
cannot actually be sure what it contains. It
may contain other substances and they
could be illegal to possess or to supply to
others.

Molly
Donald W. Reid 2017 43
What is Molly? Molly is often advertised as
the purest form of MDMA, however its true
chemical make up varies amongst areas and
dealers. In the Midwest HIDTA region, most of
the chemical variations marketed as Molly
contain bath salts. “Bath salts” is an informal
name for a family of designer drugs containing
substituted cathinones, which have similar
affects to amphetamines and cocaine.
Donald W. Reid 2017 44
MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine)
Donald W. Reid 2017 45
Generally it has been seen in the powder form but now it is
being seen in crystal form. Some users are carrying less than a
gram. In the crystal form it is easily hidden, overlooked or not
recognized as illegal narcotics by officers.
1.) Molly can be clear, white, brown or yellow brown in color.
2.) Molly can be contained in plastic bags or put into pill
capsules.
3.) Molly can be crystallized, powdered or a mixture of both.
For reliable testing, officers need to use MDMA test kits to
test it.
Donald W. Reid 2017 46
Molly is typically found in a clear capsule filled with a
white powder with a yellow or brown tint. When
conducting field tests on the capsule, the SIRCHIE NARK
II field test may provide a positive indication for MDMA.
However, laboratory results generally have shown the
actual chemical compound in Molly is
Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV is a psychoactive
drug with stimulant properties), Mephedrone (a
synthetic stimulant drug of the amphetamine and
cathinone classes), or Alpha‐ Pyrrolidinopentiophenone
(A‐PVP is a powerful synthetic stimulant drug which
functions with approximately a quarter the potency of
MDPV and the effects are said to be comparable).
Donald W. Reid 2017 47
Many users indicate their belief that Molly is the
purest form of MDMA and have no knowledge that the
capsules actually contain a combination of bath salts in
any form. Molly has become a very popular party drug
among young adults and is generally found at concerts
and raves. In some areas of the Midwest HIDTA region,
Molly appears to have replaced MDMA/ecstasy as the
drug of choice in these arenas. There is a
high risk of overdose with Molly due to the
unpredictability of the mixture of MDMA and bath
salts.
Donald W. Reid 2017 48
Long term effects of Molly are known to be
confusion, sleep abnormalities and memory loss,
especially if combined with other drugs such as
Marijuana, according to the National Institute on
Drug Abuse’s website (drugabuse.org). The website
also reports that heavy use of Molly can cause
unregulated temperatures in the body, which can
have damaging physical effects and has in some
cases been a cause of death for Molly users.

Liquid Meth
Donald W. Reid 2017 50
Liquid meth is the newest form of
methamphetamine that is reported to be
surfacing throughout many areas in the United
States. Manufacturers of this highly toxic drug
are beginning to dissolve meth in water in order
to liquefy the drug; the reason that liquid meth
is quickly becoming popular with many of the
individuals who are meth dealers, is because it
had made transporting the toxic drug so much
easier.
Donald W. Reid 2017 51
Individuals who produce meth will often
place this liquid form of the drug into
various different types of liquor bottles,
which are regularly seen at various different
ports of entry. Once the liquid meth has
passed inspection and been shipped to its
destination, individuals will then boil away
the water; thus, only the solid form of meth
will remain.
Donald W. Reid 2017 52
Liquid meth is also being applied to paper, and is
sometimes sent through packages in the U.S. mail.
Illinois law enforcement officials discovered this
recently while investigating a suspicious package that
had been sent through the postal service; after a
thorough search of the package was completed, the
officers reported finding sheets of paper that
appeared to have had liquid meth applied to them.
After doing the initial lab test in order to positively
identify their findings, the officers concluded that
methamphetamine users could easily tear off a piece
of this meth laced paper and put it into their mouth
in order to be able to get the drug into their system.
Donald W. Reid 2017 53
Liquid meth has been reported to be stronger than any of
the other forms of methamphetamine that is currently
available on the street; this information about liquid meth
was derived from meth users who often act as drug
informers to law enforcement in an effort to minimize or
eliminate their pending drug charges. Several informants
have told law enforcement officers that liquid meth was
much "better" than any of the other forms of
methamphetamine that they had ever used before. Law
enforcement officials in the southern portion of the United
States were so concerned about getting the word out
about liquid meth, that they put together a flyer about it,
in the hopes that police officers in other parts of the U.S.
will begin to be on the lookout for it.
Donald W. Reid 2017 54
Although very little is known about liquid meth,
the Alabama Department of Forensic Science set
out to find out more about what goes into making
this form of methamphetamine; this was
accomplished by dissolving a sample of liquid
meth that had been sent to their lab. Their
findings indicated that liquid meth was made from
a substance named Terofun (Pseudoephedrine
HCL), which is commonly found in pill form.
Donald W. Reid 2017 55
The rest of the ingredients can be purchased at the
local grocery or pharmacy; additionally, the lab
technicians discovered that it would only take
minutes to make a batch of liquid meth, and just over
ten minutes to cook it up. Liquid meth has already
become extremely popular in the eastern part of
Europe, and officials in that country have reported
that this form of methamphetamine is much stronger
than any other form of the drug.
Donald W. Reid 2017 56
Donald W. Reid 2017 57
Liquid meth, like all of the other forms of
methamphetamine, has been reported to
create a number of toxic effects in the users
body, that could include but are not limited to
athetosis, which is a condition that is generally
characterized by tremors and involuntary
spasms that often occur automatically in the
body; additionally, other toxic effects of liquid
meth often include chest pain and high blood
pressure, which could potentially result in
irreversible damage to the brain or the heart.
Donald W. Reid 2017 58
Other more common side effects of liquid
meth include dilated pupils, extreme
irritability, talking incessantly, disturbance in
sleep patterns, extreme nervousness, and an
increase in body temperature, which is
commonly referred to as hyperthermia. Other
long-term negative effects of liquid meth may
include, but are not be limited to, damage to
many of the major organs of the body,
including the kidneys, liver, and the lungs;
additionally, liquid meth has been reported to
cause panic, paranoia, repetitive behavior
patterns, and could make the user begin to
feel homicidal or suicidal.
Donald W. Reid 2017 59
Methamphetamine is often dissolved in water (liquefied)
for the purposes of covert transportation. It tends to be
placed in familiar containers which are commonplace at
the point of inspection and often not inspected.
Methamphetamine is also being produced as a liquid
that can be applied to paper. Authorities discovered this
method after it was detected in personal mail. All that is
required is to tear off a strip of paper and ingest it.
Donald W. Reid 2017 60
Large amounts of liquid meth are smuggled in from
Mexico and have reportedly been intercepted at
Canadian borders, smuggled in bottles disguised as
tequila or other alcohol.
Normal tequila is not oily looking or viscous, and
generally has no bubbles after shaking it. Liquid
meth appears like cooking oil after being shaken.
Normal Tequila Cooking Oil Likewise, beer bubbles
form quickly and dissipate to form a head, whereas
meth containers have bubbles that remain
suspended in the liquid long after being shaken.

Khat
In the United States khat use is most prevalent
among immigrants from Somalia, Ethiopia, and
Yemen. Cathine, a Schedule IV drug and Cathinone,
a Schedule I drug, are khat’s two principal active
ingredients. The khat plant is illegal in California.
Abuse levels are highest in cities with sizable
populations of such immigrants including Boston,
Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles,
Minneapolis, Nashville, New York, San Diego, and
Washington, D.C. There is a moderate degree of
availability and abuse of khat among members of
the Somali community in San Diego.
Traditionally, khat is
transshipped through the
United Kingdom and the
Netherlands, where khat
is legal, and then
smuggled into the United
States. Khat is smuggled
via a combination of
human couriers and
parcel delivery services.
Khat will continue to be
increasingly available in
the U.S., and abuse of the
drug
Khat is a flowering shrub native to northeast and east
Africa and the Southern Arabian Peninsula. Cathine, a
Schedule IV drug and Cathinone, a Schedule I drug, are
khat’s two active ingredients. Khat is a slow-growing
shrub that grows to 1.5 meters tall, depending on the area
and rainfall, with evergreen leaves 5-10 cm long and 1-
4cm broad.
The stimulant effect of khat is most effective
when the leaves are still fresh. Khat is consumed
orally as a tea; chewed into a paste; and
sometimes smoked or sprinkled on food. The
leaves, twigs, and shoots of the khat shrub are
most commonly chewed and stored in the cheek,
as is commonly done with loose tobacco. After
ingesting khat, the user experiences an immediate
increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
Symptoms of toxicity include delusions, loss of
appetite, and difficulty with breathing. According to
the National Drug Intelligence Center, the effects of
khat generally begin to subside between 90 minutes
to three hours after ingestion; however, effects of
the active ingredients can last up to 24 hours. More
recent research and testing have found that the shelf
life is not limited, and cathinone remains active in
the dried khat after months of being harvested.
In addition to the immediate physiological effects of
khat use, users may also experience: anorexia,
tachycardia, hypertension, insomnia, and gastric
disorders; additionally, chronic khat abuse can also
result in symptoms such as physical exhaustion,
violence, and suicidal depression.4 Khat can induce
manic behaviors, hyperactivity, and hallucinations, and
there are reports of khat-induced psychosis.
Additionally, long-term users or those that have
overdosed, have been known to suffer from liver
damage and cardiac complications, specifically
myocardial infarctions.
Khat is traditionally sold in small bundles, with each
bundle weighing approximately 100 grams. In San Diego
county, khat prices range from $40 - $90 per bundle and
average $60 per bundle.13 Reports indicates that prices
per bundle can be negotiated by individual buyers,
typically $50 instead of $60. The Somali community in
San Diego has grown significantly, and khat availability
indicated that the region can now easily handle 300 - 500
bundles on a daily basis, with resultant monthly street
value of $540,000 - $900,000 at current prices. U.S.
Customs and Border Patrol report that a bundle of khat
sells for approximately $64 USD per kilogram in the U.S.
and freshly packed khat can be as much as $300 to $600
USD per kilogram in the U.S.

Depressants
A depressant, or central depressant, is a drug that lowers neurotransmission levels, which
is to depress or reduce arousal or stimulation, in various areas of the brain.[Depressants
are also occasionally referred to as "downers" as they lower the level of arousal when
taken. Stimulants or "uppers" increase mental and/or physical function, hence the
opposite drug class of depressants is stimulants, not antidepressants.
Donald W. Reid 2017 92
Depressants are widely used throughout the world as prescription medicines
and as illicit substances. Alcohol is a very prominent depressant. Alcohol can
be and is more likely to be a large problem between teenagers and young
adults. When depressants are used, effects often include ataxia, anxiolysis,
pain relief, sedation or somnolence, and cognitive/memory impairment, as
well as in some instances euphoria, dissociation, muscle relaxation, lowered
blood pressure or heart rate, respiratory depression, and anticonvulsant
effects, and even complete anesthesia or death at high doses.
Depressants exert their effects through a number of different
pharmacological mechanisms, the most prominent of which include
facilitation of GABA, and inhibition of glutamatergic or monoaminergic
activity. Other examples are chemicals that modify the electrical signaling
inside the body. The most prominent of these being bromides and channel
blockers.
Powdered Alcohol
Donald W. Reid 2017 93
Alcohol is primarily known as a liquid, but it can also
be whipped, solidified, and practically vaporized. But
now it's available in powdered form — a product
called "Palcohol" that was just approved by the U.S.
government.
Alcohol powder is a molecular encapsulated alcohol
that produces an alcoholic drink or meal when mixed
with water. Because alcohol can be absorbed in a
sugar derivate, it can be delivered as a powder and/or
packed into capsules.
Surprisingly this is not new, a US patent for powdered
alcohol was filed in 1974.
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 94
•Reconstituted: Alcohol powder can be added
to water to make an alcoholic beverage.
•Oral: Alcohol powder is useful with capsules
to eliminate the burning taste of rectified
spirit upon ingestion.
•Nebulizer: Alcohol powder produced
through molecular encapsulated with
cyclodextrin can be used with a nebulizer
•Inhaled or Snorted.

“Smoking Alcohol"
Alcohol Without
Liquid
(AWOL)
Donald W. Reid 2017 96
An individual can pour alcohol over
dry ice and inhale it directly or with
a straw, or make a DIY vaporizing
kit using bike pumps. The alcohol
of choice is poured into a bottle,
the bottle is corked, and the
bicycle pump needle is poked
through the top of the cork. Air is
pumped into the bottle to vaporize
the alcohol, and the user inhales.
This can also be accomplished by
using a nebulizer device and
placing alcohol in the medicine
reservoir.
Donald W. Reid 2017 97
In 2004, the U.S. saw a brief emergence of the trend
with the availability of the AWOL (Alcohol Without
Liquid) device, but the product was quickly banned in
the U.S. and lost its following.
Nearly a decade later, clinicians are seeing evidence
that the practice is gaining some traction — and not
just among college kids and adolescent risk takers.
It’s popular among people who want to lose weight
and don’t want the calories that come from
consuming alcohol.
Donald W. Reid 2017 98
Donald W. Reid 2017 99
When alcohol vapor is inhaled, it goes straight from the
lungs to the brain and bloodstream, getting the individual
drunk very quickly. Because the alcohol bypasses the
stomach and liver, it isn’t metabolized, and the alcohol
doesn’t lose any of its potency.
Drinkers feel the effects almost instantly, but the risks are
also much higher. People who smoke their alcohol are at a
much greater risk of getting alcohol poisoning and
potentially overdosing. When people drink too much
alcohol, they tend to vomit. Getting sick is one of the ways
that prevents an alcohol overdose, but when alcohol
circumvents the stomach and liver, the body can’t expel it.
Donald W. Reid 2017 100
It’s also much harder to know just how much
alcohol you’re consuming in one sitting if you’re not
stringently measuring. If a cup of alcohol is poured
into a bottle and then vaporized, the drinker cannot
tell if they are inhaling a few sips or the whole cup,
since the liquid remains in the bottle.
“It’s also terrible for your lungs and nasal passages,”
says medical officials. “Your lungs are not meant to
inhale something that can turn back into a liquid.
When you think of liquid in the lungs, you think of
drowning.”
Donald W. Reid 2017 101
Waxy Marijuana
Donald W. Reid 2017 102
Open sources indicate that waxy marijuana or wax marijuana
is the purest form of cannabis. It contains anywhere from 82-
99% THC making it several times more potent than a
marijuana bud on a cannabis plant which usually contains 5-
28% THC. One hit of wax is supposedly equal to 1-2 full
cannabis joints and is reported as being more clear and
longer lasting than average marijuana. Wax marijuana is also
a medical marijuana product. Typical wax marijuana is golden
in color and crumbly; though texture may vary based on
type.
Donald W. Reid 2017 103
“DABBING” is the term used for those who are smoking
concentrated cannabis either in wax, oil, or budder form.
“Do you want a dab?” or “Let’s dab” are two of the more
common phrases you may hear regarding those who “dab”.
The term “Dabs” became popular in the Western medical
marijuana states to refer to the smoking of butane hash oil,
also known as butane honey oil, or simply BHO. Other
names include “honey oil,” “red oil,” “jelly-butane hash,”
and similar concoctions.
Donald W. Reid 2017 104
The “butane” part of BHO refers to the solvent used to
extract the cannabis resin from the plant. A large glass
tube or PVC pipe is packed with cannabis, usually the
discarded “shake” left from trimming the buds ,
increasingly actual “bud” is used. Liquid butane is forced
through the tube and the butane strips the resins from
the plant to collect in a container. The container is left
uncovered to allow the butane evaporate away. What’s
left is a very potent form of hash oil. The extracted
cannabinoids are often called hashish, but they are not
hashish in the traditional sense of the word. They are
“cannabis concentrates.” So hash oil, budder, earwax or
most any form of concentrated cannabis processed in this
manner could be considered a dab.
Donald W. Reid 2017 105
Experienced pot smokers will often pass out after taking a
hit of dab. In addition dab inhalation is followed by intense
coughing fits. Proponents of marijuana use stand by dabs
safe use. “It’s not that the hashish preparations are any
more dangerous, it is the same non-toxic cannabis, after
all. It’s simply more potent, so bottom line, you don’t need
to take these big lung-buster hits like you’re trying to win
the ‘clear the bong’ contest.”
Donald W. Reid 2017 106
So let’s follow this thinking…it’s no more dangerous
than smoking pot, but pot doesn’t usually make a
person pass out leading to the potential of
smashing ones head on something as they fall. So
in this definition of more dangerous it’s possible
that passing out and a hacking cough count as
more dangerous. In addition there is some
speculation that the products used to extract the
resins (butane, isopropyl alcohol, chloroform, etc.)
may leave residual chemicals in the oil that when
smoked could cause other damage to one’s health,
especially the lungs.
Donald W. Reid 2017 107
An additional issue that is cropping up steadily in states
allowing “medical marijuana” use is explosions due to the
butane method of making dabs. Butane is a heavier-than-
air gas that moves to the floor near pilot lights, electrical
outlets, discarded cigarette butts, etc. Combining highly
explosive gases with unknowledgeable, potentially stoned
people, who place the butane mixture in hidden, often
unvented, enclosures while waiting for the butane to
evaporate, is a recipe for disaster. This is certainly an issue
first responders need to be aware of when responding to
or investigating fires/explosions.

Marijuana candy
Donald W. Reid 2017 110
Marijuana candy is becoming very popular in States that
have legalized Marijuana and also becoming more
available in States that have not. It is dangerous because of
its potency, and because it resembles hard or gummy
candy or chocolate. poses a greater risk to children that
may accidentally ingest the drug.
Marijuana candy is made with highly concentrated
marijuana oil or extract. The hard candies are made like
any other candy using corn syrup, water, sugar, coloring
and flavoring.
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 111
Marijuana oil or extract containing concentrated THC is added
to the mixture. The oil is made by grinding marijuana into a
fine powder, heating it in vegetable oil, and passing it through
cheesecloth or other types of filters to remove any solids.
Recipes are available on the internet.
The process to make marijuana chocolate is similar. The
homemade candy is made by mixing marijuana oil with
melted chocolate. Large scale medical marijuana production is
taking place in Canada, where chocolate plants are licensed to
manufacture marijuana chocolate. Smaller scale production
occurs in the United States in jurisdictions where medical
marijuana is legal.
Donald W. Reid 2017 112
Liquid THC
Donald W. Reid 2017 113
When producing liquid THC the entire cannabis plant,
rather than just the buds or leaves, is used resulting in a
more profitable product. There are various methods on
the internet to extract the liquid THC , one of the most
common being Butane extraction, producing an end
product that ranges between 82% to 99% pure THC. Liquid
THC can also be purchased ready for use over the
internet. Because liquid THC is odorless and typically sold
in small quantities, the trafficker benefits from moving a
small bulk, high-value commodity, rather than the
relatively high bulk marijuana leaves and buds. Liquid THC
also provides the trafficker various concealment
alternatives.
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 114
Liquid THC is ingested via a vaporizer, similar to an e-
cigarette device. Liquid THC provides the user an
almost instant ‘high’. Some users also experience
hallucinations. The vaporizers release no odor or
smoke when used.
Liquid THC can also be used during food preparation
and is often sold in food items such as cookies,
brownies and other baked goods. Because it is
odorless, the oil can be combined with any variety of
foods and go virtually unnoticed.
Donald W. Reid 2017 115
Transdermal THC patches
Donald W. Reid 2017 116
Marijuana is lipophilic, which means that it can be
dissolved into a fat-soluble substance and readily
enter cell membranes. In other words, it can be
effective when applied topically on the skin. Marijuana
can be used transdermally to relieve pain from many
conditions. Medical marijuana can be a balm, lotion,
ointment or rubbing alcohol solution. In the old days
when people only had plants to use for medication,
many patients would soak marijuana leaves in alcohol
and apply them as a poultice to an arthritic or swollen
joint.
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 117
Many substances pass easily through the skin and that
is why transdermal medicine has been more evident in
contemporary medicine. When it comes to marijuana's
anti-inflammatory effect people have long experienced
this in action when they have applied marijuana to
their skin. Patients with arthritis, muscle and joint pain
can testify to the easing of the aches and pains that
they feel on a regular basis. Topical marijuana
preparations usually provide only local relief and do
not have effect on the brain, meaning there is usually
no high.
Donald W. Reid 2017 118
Zannie Air Freshener
Donald W. Reid 2017 119
ZANNIE, phenazepam, a product marketed on
the internet as a relaxing air freshener contains a
prescription tranquilizer similar to Valium and
Xanax. Phenazepam is a benzodiazepine drug,
which was developed and produced in Russia. In
1975 phenazepam was first synthesized in the
USSR. In 2003 phenazepam is reported as a new
recreational drug in Finland. In 2007 phenazepam
is available in the UK as a powder.
Donald W. Reid 2017 120
In 2010 phenazepam was found in the United States as
the psychoactive ingredient in blotter prints submitted
to the DEA as suspected LSD. In isolated cases it has
been around in the U.S. since 2010, but it now appears
to be hitting main stream synthetic drug sites being sold
over the internet.
Donald W. Reid 2017 121
Onset within 1 hr.
Effects may last several days.
Powerful, long-acting benzodiazepine.
Compared with other benzodiazepines, overdoses with
phenazepam are both more likely and more problematic
for these reasons.
Phenazepam is exceptionally potent. Active doses start at
0.5 mg.
Donald W. Reid 2017 122
The visual appearance of a dangerous dose is not
impressive. The visual size of a 2 mg (0.0002) alprazolam
(Xanax) bar is equivalent to a 0.5 gram (500 mg) of
phenazepam. If the user is accustomed to dealing with
benzodiazepines in the form of tablets or bars and
attempts to 'eyeball' an amount of phenazepam that looks
similar, or is even a tenth as large, they will take a massive
overdose. Likewise, snorting a 'line' of phenazepam similar
in size to a line of cocaine or heroin is likely to produce an
overdose.
Donald W. Reid 2017 123
Compared to prescription benzodiazepines that have been
diverted from regulated channels, phenazepam is inexpensive,
and rarely sold in quantities of less than 100 mg. Any user who
can afford to buy this drug will be buying a dose capable of
causing prolonged coma.
Phenazepam's effects are often delayed by 2-3 hours. The
inexperienced user, noticing no effects within the first hour,
may believe they have taken too little and re-dose, resulting in
an overdose.
Phenazepam's 60 hour half-life makes dosing mistakes hard to
recover from. The overdose will last for days, possibly weeks.
Donald W. Reid 2017 124
Death can easily occur if Zannie is used along with CNS
depressant drugs, opiates, alcohol, or barbiturates. It
has had some really bad effects when a person takes it
with other central nervous system depressants. Side
effects include: hiccups, dizziness, loss of coordination,
drowsiness, and amnesia which can be quite
pronounced at high doses. Abrupt stoppage following
prolonged use results in: restlessness, anxiety,
insomnia, seizures, convulsions, and death.
Donald W. Reid 2017 125
Two overdose deaths occurred in the United
States in 2010. The first occurred in Georgia in
September 2010, an 18-year-old died after
using a combination of phenazepam and
oxycodone. Three other individuals in the
same incident were hospitalized. The second
death occurred in October 2010 in Charleston,
West Virginia. A 42-year-old man died after
ingesting both phenazepam and poppy tea.
Donald W. Reid 2017 126
The Federal Analog Act of the U.S. applies only to
substances classified as Schedule I and Schedule II.
Controlled benzodiazepines under the U.S. Controlled
Substances Act are classified as Schedule IV. Phenazepam
is a non-scheduled drug in the United States. In Russia
where phenazepam is legal it is used in the treatment of
neurological disorders such as epilepsy, alcohol
withdrawal syndrome and insomnia. Phenazepam is a
long acting benzodiazepine with anti anxiety, euphoric,
anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and hypnotic (sleep-
inducing) effects.
Donald W. Reid 2017 127
Its English name is a transliteration of the Russian name
with alternate spellings: 'fenazepam', 'phenazeram'. It is
also used as a premedication before surgery. Mark Ryan,
Director of Louisiana Poison Control Center is concerned
that the product could be used as a predatory (date rape)
drug. Phenazepam creates a type of sedation in which a
person can't remember what happened.
Donald W. Reid 2017 128
Donald W. Reid 2017 129
Users reported several administration routes.
Injection, snorting, oral ingestion, rectal
absorption, and cigarettes dipped in liquid
phenazepam solution and then smoked.
Smoking adds an additional health issue due
to the fumes containing chlorine, bromine,
and nitrogen oxide/nitrogen dioxide. All are
toxic.
Donald W. Reid 2017 130
Electronic Cigarettes
with THC
Donald W. Reid 2017 131
This device is not your typical
vaporizer. It use a specially
prepared liquid to administer
psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC), the active ingredient in
marijuana, to patients enrolled in the
medicinal cannabis program. By using
a THC based liquid, there are no by
products released while smoking
except water vapor.
Donald W. Reid 2017 132
Medical Cannabis Management began
distributing the Cannabis e-cigarette to
medical cannabis dispensaries and to
physicians in California at the end of March
2013. The CannaCig vaporizes a small
amount of THC containing liquid. The vapor
is then inhaled by the user resulting in
immediate effects as compared to Marinol
which takes up to an hour reach full
systemic effects. Marinol also has an
expensive price tag while the new device
sells for much less.
Donald W. Reid 2017 133
The use of a THC containing liquid eliminates the
need for both the user and the dispensaries to
keep actual marijuana on hand. The oil has the
exact effect as Marinol and raw cannabis with
less propensity for diversion of the drug and
other crimes related to illicit drug use. We can
also expect to see a standardization of THC
dosing through quality control measures not
available with raw cannabis production. As the
CannaCig only vaporizes the oil, nothing is
burned and no smoke is produced. Current
devices used for vaporization of marijuana
leaves (vaporizers) are expensive and unreliable
as a THC delivery device.
Donald W. Reid 2017 134
The electronic cigarette heats the hash oil
from a lithium- ion battery and the narcotic
is transmitted to the recipient in the form of
vapor. Individuals using this method appear
to be smoking an electronic cigarette for its
legitimate purpose and there is little to no
odor commonly associated with the
burning/smoking of marijuana.
Donald W. Reid 2017 135
Alcohol Enema
Donald W. Reid 2017 136
Using an alcohol enema involves placing a small
tube into someone's rectum and pouring alcohol
into the colon. Because the alcohol is absorbed
directly into the bloodstream, the recipient gets
drunk faster.
Our stomachs and livers have an enzyme known as
alcohol dehydrogenase that breaks down ethanol to
make it less toxic for our bodies, said Atlanta
gastroenterologist Dr. Preston Stewart.
Donald W. Reid 2017 137
Overview
The lower gastrointestinal tract doesn't have that
enzyme, so alcohol molecules are absorbed into
the bloodstream through the lining of the colon.
Eventually the alcohol would still make its way to
the liver, Stewart said, but the high alcohol content
would overwhelm the organ. "It's extremely
dangerous."
No one is sure when alcohol enemas first
appeared on the social scene or how frequently
they're being used.
Donald W. Reid 2017 138
The effects have been fatal in at least one
case. An autopsy performed after the death
of a 58-year-old Texas man in 2004 showed
he had been given an enema with enough
sherry to have a blood alcohol level of 0.47
percent. Negligent homicide charges were
later dropped against his wife, who said she
gave him the enema.

Cheeba Chews
Donald W. Reid 2017 140
cheebachews states on their website cheebachews.com revealed an
assortment of taffy products which are produced in both a
“Medicated” and “Unmedicated” versions. According to the
manufacturer, the Medicated products contain anywhere from
70mg to 175mg of THC and the Unmedicated product contains
hemp oil. Both products weigh approximately 10 grams and contain
several other ingredients. The manufacturer makes a claim that
their product is a “super food” and provides a list of health benefits
attributed to the high quality of ingredients contained in their
product. Officers should be aware of this product due to its ability
to be easily confused with regular taffy or candy.

(THC) Pills
Donald W. Reid 2017 143
A pill known as Marinol has been legal and approved by the Food and
Drug Administration for use with a prescription anywhere in America
since 1985.
It's active ingredient? Dronabinol, better known as THC, the primary
psychoactive element of the cannabis plant.
"Marinol provides standardized THC concentrations, does not contain
the other 400 uncharacterized substances found in smoked marijuana,
such as carcinogens or fungal spores, and is not associated with the
quick high of smoked marijuana," said Neil Hirsch, a spokesman for
Marinol manufacturer Solvay Pharmaceuticals.
Donald W. Reid 2017 144

THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects,
and cannabis can be used to treat pain by altering
transmitter release on dorsal root ganglion of
the spinal cord and in the periaqueductal gray. Other
effects include relaxation, alteration of visual,
auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite
stimulation. THC has marked antiemetic properties,
and may also reduce aggression in certain subjects.

Side Effects
Crunk
Donald W. Reid 2017 147
Now, the newest fad includes a "high" created right at home
from ingredients that can be found in any medicine cabinet
and refrigerator in your own home.
It's called a Crunk Concoction, and it's a deadly juice that
teens are downing in the hopes of getting high.
In January, a Hawaii man, Chucky Dias Oliveira made the
headlines after he died in his sleep after drinking the
concoction called "Crunk."
"When they don't understand the dangers of it, they're more
willing to take the risk. And we see the effects of it," Hawaii
Police Dept. Det. Ian Lee Loy said.
Crunk is referred to in rap music and urban slang. It means a
lot of things, including a drink that mixes soda or other
beverage with an over-the-counter cough syrup and crushed
prescription pain killers.
Donald W. Reid 2017 148
Crunk produces an intense rush that's proven dangerous.
A "Crunking high" can cause blackouts and breathing
problems. It slurs speech and motor skills.
"A lot of prescription drugs act like narcotics," said Reece.
"They're central nervous system depressants, so it slows
down the heart and the central nervous system. Just like
enough alcohol can cause alcohol poisoning and stop the
heart."
Drinkers experience a sense of whoozy euphoria, Stewart
said, one that can be incredibly addictive, not to mention
deadly. Overdoses can lead to difficulty breathing, loss of
consciousness and death. And prolonged exposure to the
painkillers can do lasting damage to one's liver and other
organs.
Donald W. Reid 2017 149
"I had a fourth-grader tell me that he had seen it in the
schools. They can buy pills for $3 to $5," said Officer Robert
Stewart, who speaks regularly at area schools and events to
discuss drug abuse.
Crunk is a deceptively sweet concoction, he said, consisting of
over-the-counter cough syrup and a lemon-lime flavored soft
drink (such as Sprite), mixed with crushed up prescription
painkillers.
"It's popular due to the soft drink being palatable to the kids,"
added Detective Ian Lee Loy. "It's sweet, it's tasty, and it
affords the medium to ingest the narcotic."

Drunken Gummies
Donald W. Reid 2017 151
One new way young adults are becoming intoxicated is by
mixing Vodka and Gummy Bears together. The Gummy Bears
will soak up the Vodka, and then teenagers eat the Gummy
Bears and become intoxicated. The Gummy Bears that have
been mixed in Vodka can be odorless. The person eating
them has no idea how much alcohol they are putting into
their system. You can find step-by-step instructions on how
to make the gummies on Youtube.

Hand sanitizer
Donald W. Reid 2017 153
Hand sanitizer is the latest in a string of household
products used to induce intoxication, and it has public
health officials worried, as a few squirts of hand
sanitizer could equal a couple of shots of hard liquor.
"This is a rapidly emerging trend," Dr. Cyrus Rangan,
medical toxicology consultant for Children's Hospital Los
Angeles, said in a news conference today.
About 2,600 cases have been reported in California since
2010, but it's become a national problem.
Donald W. Reid 2017 154
"It's not just localized to us," Helen Arbogast, an injury
prevention coordinator in the trauma program at Children's
Hospital Los Angeles, told ABC News today. "Since 2009 we
can see on YouTube it's in all regions of the country. We see it
in the South, in the Midwest, in the East."
Liquid hand sanitizer is 62 to 65 percent ethyl alcohol, or
ethanol, the main ingredient in beer, wine and spirits,
making it 120-proof. To compare, a bottle of vodka is 80-
proof.
Donald W. Reid 2017 155
"A few swallows is all it takes to get
a person to get the intoxicated
effects of alcohol," Rangan said.
Doctors said ingesting hand
sanitizer can produce the same
side effects as consuming large
amounts of alcohol - slurred
speech, unresponsiveness, possibly
falling into a coma state.
Rangan warned that long-term use
could lead to brain, liver and kidney
damage.
Donald W. Reid 2017 156
Teenagers use salt to break
up the alcohol from the
sanitizer to get a more
powerful dose. These
distillation instructions can
be found on the Internet in
tutorial videos that
describe in detail how to
do it. Other troubling
videos have surfaced
online showing kids
laughing as they purposely
ingested sanitizer, many
boasting of fulfilling a
dare.
Donald W. Reid 2017 157
"Methods to distill it can be found through friends and the
Internet, but straight ingestion of the product without
distillation is also common,"
Rangan said in a news release.
Dr. Sean Nordt, director of toxicology at the USC Los
Angeles County Emergency Department, told ABC News it
used to get reports of children accidentally consuming
small amounts of hand sanitizer, but now the trend is
toward purposeful ingestion by those who cannot
purchase or obtain alcohol legally.
Donald W. Reid 2017 158
""We get worried about children getting into these, but it is
different from an adolescent who is trying to drink half a
bottle to get drunk," said Nordt.
And it's a tough problem to combat, as hand sanitizer is
inexpensive and seems to be available at the entrance of
every door. Young people can buy pocket-size bottles, which
can be the equivalent of two-three shots of hard liquor, or
huge tubs at most markets and stores.
Donald W. Reid 2017 159
Arbogast said foam hand sanitizer was a safer option to
keep around the house, but "any hand sanitizer will be at
risk for alcohol poisoning, as the foam type is still 62
percent ethyl alcohol," she told today's news conference.
Rangan cautioned parents to treat hand sanitizers "like we
treat any medication in the home as far as safety is
concerned. Keep it out of reach, out of sight, out of mind
when not in use."
Nordt said he hoped parents and store clerks would
become more vigilant and monitor the sales of hand
sanitizers.
""Most stores will sell it to an adolescent without thinking
twice," Nordt told ABC News. "Maybe now they will."

Weed Butter
aka Cannabutter
According to those that post in the online forums,
“weed butter” is a much safer method to ingest
marijuana than smoking it.
To make “weed butter,” marijuana is mixed with
regular butter and brought to a boil which causes
the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to bond with the
butter. This bonding makes the THC more potent.
The roughage (i.e. stems, leaves and buds) is then
strained out, and the liquid is cooled and stored as
butter. The “weed butter” is then used for baked
goods, brownies, cakes, etc, which is either sold or
consumed by the individual.
THC, which is the chemical that gives marijuana’s desired
effects, needs a carrier to get it into the bloodstream and
THC is not water. This means that when heated or even
just mixed with water, it does not chemically mix into a
homogenous substance. Water and THC float separately,
but THC is soluble in fats and alcohol. Butter and oils are
loaded with fat and serve as a perfect carrier for the THC
to go straight to the bloodstream. Since “weed butter” is
blended with a soluble fat, it will stay with the body for
longer periods of time (up to months) after ingesting it. A
stronger version of “weed butter” can be made by
substituting marijuana with hashish.
Synthetic Cannabinoids
“7H”, “K2”, and “Spice” are products
containing synthetic cannabinoid
chemicals resembling THC, the primary
element in marijuana.1Sprayed or added
to dried plant material to create herbal
smoking products and blends, substances
comprised of these synthetic
cannabinoids are an emerging trend that
allows marijuana users a legal substitute
to the drug, and law enforcement a
hurdle in detection and deterrent
enforcement.
Synthetic Cannabinoids products are
psychoactive chemical and herbal blends legal in
the U.S. which, when ingested, create effects
similar to marijuana. Initially developed for
research on the effects of cannabis on the brain
and for pain management, “7H”, “Spice”, “7th
heaven”, or “K2” is currently sold as herbal
smoking blends, incense, or potpourri in smoke
shops, gas stations, and on the internet.2
Cannabinoids are becoming increasingly popular
as a legal and readily available alternative to
marijuana.
Currently, there is little data available to
determine the number of users in the U.S.;
however, information indicates that the
demand for the product is increasing, most
notably by marijuana smokers who may fear
drug testing and by young adults and teenagers
experimenting with the drug due to its difficult
detection and belief that there are little or no
adverse effects. Common field test kits, canines,
and routine urine tests do not detect
cannabinoids; therefore, marijuana smokers
may feel that it is a “safe” alternative to
marijuana.
Cannabinoids are typically packaged in re-sealable
pouches and are available in 3-5 gram packs and
400-800 milligram packs ranging in prices from
$20-$50 per pack. Bulk purchases via the internet
are also common. Most products are sold as
incense or herbal smoking blends produced from
various dried plants, but some websites sell raw
chemicals that can be administered directly to the
plant material. This product is ingested by mixing
the material with regular tobacco or marijuana
and inhaling the smoke from a joint or pipe.
Since synthetic cannabinoids are several times more
potent than marijuana, the adverse effects after
ingesting the product can cause hallucinations,
anxiety, heightened blood pressure, nausea, vomiting,
and in severe cases, tremors and seizures. There are
few studies indicating what – if any – long term effects
exist. In addition, common field test kits, canines, and
routine urine tests do not detect cannabinoids, making
it difficult for law enforcement to detect its presence.

Miscellaneous
Lip Balm
Donald W. Reid 2017 172
There is currently no evidence that supports the
reported “high” obtained by users using lip balm
in this manner. The information is included for
informational purposes only. This may be
attempted by some only because of the internet
claims. Hopefully this information will allow a
parent, teacher or other authority figure to be
alerted that this person is attempting to get
“high” before actual drugs are explored.
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 173
A popular brand of lip balm that creates a
cool, tingly sensation is apparently being
used by some people on a place other than
their lips to enhance the experience of
already being high or drunk.
According to Urban Dictionary, “beezin’,”the
practice of putting Burt’s Bees, which has a
peppermint oil in it, on one’s eyelids,
produces “a freaky yet pleasurable tingling
sensation.”

Furadan in Marijuana Grows
Donald W. Reid 2017 175
Plants in illegal Marijuana fields have been reported to have been
treated with carbofuran, a pesticide known under the trade name
Furadan (most common), and others. Formerly a U.S. registered
pesticide, in March 2009 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) revoked all food tolerances for carbofuran, prohibiting its use
on crops intended for human consumption. An eventual ban in the
U.S. is anticipated. Carbofuran is highly toxic to vertebrates – a
quarter teaspoon (1 ml) is potentially fatal to humans. A
cholinesterase inhibitor (neurotoxin), carbofuran exposure can
result from inhalation, ingestion, eye, or skin contact.
130
Overview
Donald W. Reid 2017 176
The precautionary statement published by the
manufacturer prior to the EPA food tolerance revocation
states people handling Furadan should minimally wear
long-sleeve shirts, long pants, chemical-resistant gloves,
protective eyewear, and use a respirator with a canister
approved for pesticides. Symptoms of poisoning include
weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps,
diarrhea, tight chest, blurred vision, constricted pupils, and
abnormal saliva flow. Seek immediate medical attention if
you are exposed to carbofuran and experience any
symptoms.
Donald W. Reid 2017 177
Formerly available in the U.S. in pellet form, carbofuran is
most commonly encountered as a concentrated purple or
pink liquid. Marijuana growers use plastic bottles or other
containers to mix the concentrate with water. The solution
is applied to marijuana plants by wiping or spraying.
Donald W. Reid 2017 178
Butane Extraction
Process
Donald W. Reid 2017 179
The method for extracting hash oil has its basis in an
industrial extraction method known as Supercritical Fluid
Extraction. It uses totally over-the-counter butane gas (8 oz
can) as the extraction solvent, and requires nothing even
remotely suspicious or difficult to purchase. The only other
thing needed is a section one and a half feet long and 1 3/4"
diameter PVC pipe and two end caps. Threaded PVC is not
necessary.
For reasons not yet clear, butane (and perhaps other
gas/solvents with similar ultra-low-boiling properties)
selectively solvate the fraction(s) of cannabis oils, pulling out
only an amber "honey oil" and leaving the vegetative oils,
waxes, chlorophyll, etc. behind in the plant matter.
Donald W. Reid 2017 180
You may notice in one of the PVC end caps a single small hole is drilled in
the center. This hole will be sized to snugly receive the little outlet nozzle of
a butane can.
In the other PVC end cap 5 or 6 small holes will be drilled, clustered in the
center (like a pepper shaker). This is the drainage end of the pipe.
A piece of paper towel or coffee filter may be found inside the PVC for
filtration.
PVC pipe may be found with plant matter that has been pulverized into a
coarse powder.
Donald W. Reid 2017 181
Observations
Pipe may be found mounted over an “oil”
collection vessel.
The process takes a whole 8-oz can of butane. A
spark at this point in the process would spell
disaster since the PVC is now an incendiary
explosive device that is leaking butane.
The butane moves down the pipe. When the
extraction, containing butane, gets to the
bottom it will drain into the collection vessel.
One may notice a pale, glowing yellow-green-
gold hue of the oil extract.
Donald W. Reid 2017 182
Over approximately five to eight minutes, the butane extract
will finish draining from the pipe to the receiving vessel.
There is a lot of residual butane still evaporating from within
the pipe. A recently made batch will show a stream of
butane fumes coming from the top hole of the PVC.
Butane has a very low-boiling point and is volatile. Any
residual butane will likely begin boiling at ambient (room)
temperature.
It takes about 20 minutes for most of the butane to
evaporate from the PVC pipe. Remember, butane is heavier
than air and therefore collects in areas open to pilot lights
on water heaters and furnaces.
Donald W. Reid 2017 183
After the butane evaporates the oil is redissolve in
anhydrous or high 99% isopropanol (isopropyl) alcohol,
and then poured into a vial and left to sit out for a day
or two allowing the alcohol to evaporate. Any change to
the temperature of the solution before the butane is
totally evaporated will cause the oil to "superboiled"
out of the containment vessel.
The final product is a deep yellow-amber colored oil.
Since there is some concern about the possibility of a
PVC residue in the final product some individuals will
use steel instead of PVC.
Donald W. Reid 2017 184
If responders are called to an occupancy where materials and paraphernalia
believed to be used for hash oil extraction are found, they should
immediately exit the structure and call law enforcement. Ultimately a bomb
squad may need to respond, especially if homemade extraction tubes
resembling pipe bombs are found. It is important to note as of the date of
this alert, operations that have been discovered have not resulted in pipe
bombs being found; what was found were, in fact, extractor tubes. This does
not mean that eventually pipe bombs will not be found. With the
understanding that drug dealers often use booby traps against law
enforcement and competing drug dealers, it is wise to err on the side of
safety and take all necessary safety precautions. These include but are not
limited to the proper use of PPE and SCBA as appropriate

Sirchie Nark II Test Kit
MDPV is a synthetic stimulant recognized as a
schedule I substance. This specific field test will
presumptively identify MDPV by turning a
distinct Yellow to Yellow/Green color. Commonly
found as a white to tan powder, this substance
is being sold as everyday products like bath salts,
stain remover, plant food or glass cleaner. Of the
“bath salt” products on the market, this is the
most popular chemical configuration currently
and all testing should start with this specific field
test. Like all our NARK II narcotic field tests, the
MDPV Reagent is meant for presumptive field
drug testing. For Sale to Law Enforcement Only!
Donald W. Reid 2017 187
SIRCHIE NARK II TEST KIT
Mephedrone is the 2nd “bath salt” configuration of this synthetic stimulant
found on the street. Not as common as the MDPV, we recommend conducting
this test only after you have conducted the MDPV Reagent and not received a
positive. This presumptive field test will positively identify Mephedrone with
an IMMEDIATE Purple color after breakage and agitation of the 3rd ampoule.
This product will again be sold as standard household substances like bath
salts, stain remover, plant food or glass cleaner. Like all our NARK II narcotic
field tests, the Mephedrone Reagent is meant for presumptive field drug testing.

Shake and Bake or One Pot Meth Making
Donald W. Reid 2017 190
The One-pot method means that meth cooks can
make meth in one sealed container which is
typically turned to cause the reaction needed to
turn several toxic ingredients into eth. It allows for
smaller batches to be made but is also very
dangerous
Donald W. Reid 2017 191
The chemical reaction going on inside the container
(which can be anything from a Coleman fuel can to a
soda bottle) causes an extremely high amount of
pressure to build up within the container after being
shaken; this method can cause an explosion.
Donald W. Reid 2017 192
Shake and Bake Meth Making materials
The biggest danger in relation to this method is
the fact that it is fast and portable. So portable
in fact, that it is most common to find people
using this method to make meth in their car.
They generally drive around while the meth is
being made to release the fumes and when the
process is over, some 40 minutes later, they
simply chuck the used container filled with
toxic chemical residue out of the window. Aside
from the environmental impact this has, it also
poses a hazard to children that naturally want
to explore and pick up the things they find..
Donald W. Reid 2017 193
The remnants of the chemicals that remain in
the container are generally muddy brown in
color. If you suspect someone of making meth
using this method please contact authorities as
soon as possible. This type of meth lab is really
a mobile ticking time bomb. If you come across
a discarded container used in one-pot (shake
and bake) meth making do not touch it –
contact the police department to discard it, as
they will likely need to have a haz-mat team
clean up the mess left behind

4th edition the new high revised part 2

  • 1. Chemicals used in Meth Manufacture Donald W. Reid 2017 1
  • 2. Most of the chemicals associated with producing meth can be grouped into the following distinct categories with similar toxic and physical properties: 1. solvents 2. metals and salts 3. strong acids or bases Regardless of the production method (there are several methods used to produce meth), chemicals in each of these groups are used. Donald W. Reid 2017 2
  • 3. Methamphetamine is a synthetic analogue of adrenaline. Adrenalin is a naturally produced hormone the body produces in small amounts when reacting to an immediate stress. The hormone and the drug that mimics it increases energy and alertness when we need a short burst to escape immediate danger. The difference between the two is that the naturally secreted adrenalin quickly clears our systems and we recover. Meth can last 6 to 8 hours or longer. Effects Donald W. Reid 2017 3
  • 4. Methamphetamine, when inhaled, gives the user an extreme, overwhelming sense of euphoria, power, and seemingly boundless energy. Ideas come in a flash, conversation quickens, and sexual arousal is heightened; lights and colors seem brighter, the heart beat speeds up and the person becomes restless with nervous intensity. It is sometimes used to instill confidence in social situations and an oral tablet, Yaba (a mix of caffeine and meth) has become popular at clubs and raves. Donald W. Reid 2017 4
  • 5. This wonderful feeling quickly fades and the user crashes. The crash comes from the user’s body paying the price for the super‐charged meth state. Fatigue and depression are the common elements. Users may sleep for extended periods unless they have become dependent on the drug, in which case they will awaken and begin a cycle of craving and drug seeking behavior. Extended periods of use, called ‘tweaking’, will force an addict to keep using more and more of the drug. They will stay awake and tweaked for days or even a week at a time. An episode may only end when they are arrested or hospitalized for psychotic, violent behavior or when their body simply cannot function any longer. Donald W. Reid 2017 5
  • 6. from methamphetamine abuse can come in a variety of forms – severe anorexia, hyperthermia, convulsions, or cardiac collapse. Unfortunately, it is the loved ones of the addict who usually suffer first. Meth addiction is a noted cause of family violence because the aggression and irritability felt by addicts is usually directed at a spouse or children. Signs of Abuse Donald W. Reid 2017 6
  • 7. Meth mouth an accelerated tooth decay and tooth loss is associated with chronic meth use. The drug itself doesn’t directly cause the problem, rather, the dry mouth and teeth grinding from meth use, along with poor oral hygiene, lead to the condition. Donald W. Reid 2017 7
  • 8. Meth Sores One of the most striking effects of meth is the change in the physical appearance of meth users. Because meth causes the blood vessels to constrict, it cuts off the steady flow of blood to all parts of the body. Heavy usage can weaken and destroy these vessels, causing tissues to become prone to damage and inhibiting the body's ability to repair itself. Acne appears, sores take longer to heal, and the skin loses its luster and elasticity. Some users are covered in small sores, the result of obsessive skin‐picking brought on by the hallucination of having bugs crawling beneath the skin, a disorder known as formication. Donald W. Reid 2017 8
  • 9. Donald W. Reid 2017 9
  • 11. Gravel is a highly addictive synthetic stimulant that is similar to bath salts. The primary component of GRAVEL is alpha-pyrrolidinopentiophenone (alpha- PVP), it is very often combined with other drugs or chemicals. It has been reported that Gravel has been found to contain methamphetamine, Klonopin, bath salts, rat poison, ammonia and ammonium nitrate. Gravel is said to cost between $80 and $200 a gram. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 11
  • 12. Gravel is found in a form similar to small rocks or pieces of salt and is injected or smoked. Donald W. Reid 2017 12
  • 13. Short-term effects of Gravel abuse are: • Extreme paranoia, • increased blood pressure, • elevated heart rate, • violence, • hallucinations • and brain damage. long term effects are unknown at this time. Hospitals have reported a serious deterioration in physical appearance after consistent abuse of the drug. Effects Donald W. Reid 2017 13
  • 14. Users have said that the injection of Gravel can result in the deterioration of the tissue in and around the injection site leaving gaping holes in the body tissue that can be inches deep. This picture may not be caused by gravel. The proof and evidence that this happens due to gravel drug use has not been found yet and is unverified. Keep this in mind. It was shared as part of a users information of the drug not as actual fact. Donald W. Reid 2017 14
  • 15. The Drug Enforcement Administration lists alpha-PVP as a Schedule I controlled substance analog. Legal Status Donald W. Reid 2017 15
  • 16. Smoking Coffee Donald W. Reid 2017 16
  • 17. Coffee has been around for centuries – but a new form of ingesting popularity with teens coffee is gaining and it’s extremely dangerous. Viral videos of teenagers smoking very common online.coffee are currently Guides to smoking (or “vaping”) coffee are published online. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 17
  • 18. Some are taking this trend a step further by soaking paper towels in coffee, letting the paper towel dry, cutting the paper towel into smaller strips, and smoking it. Caffeine pills or powder can also be used. Freebasing caffeine produces a high comparable to one produced by crack cocaine, since both are central nervous system stimulants. The onset of the high when freebasing caffeine is immediate, but the duration of the high is lesser than that of cocaine. Donald W. Reid 2017 18
  • 19. 110Donald W. Reid 2017 19
  • 20. •Breathing trouble •Changes in alertness •Confusion •Convulsions •Diarrhea •Dizziness •Fever •Hallucinations •Increased thirst •Irregular heartbeat •Muscle twitching •Increased likelihood of outrageous behavior •Rapid heartbeat •Sleeping trouble •Urination – increased •Vomiting Signs of Abuse Donald W. Reid 2017 20
  • 22. Kratom is derived from the Mitragyna Speciosa plant indigenous to Southeast Asia, primarily in Thailand. This plant consists of a psychotropic molecule called Mitragynine that’s been reported to produce both stimulant and sedative effects, depending on the dosage. Kratom is purportedly a stimulant at lower doses with effects to include alertness, physical energy, talkativeness and giddiness. With higher doses, Kratom mimics an opiate with sedative effects and euphoria. These effects are usually felt within 5–10 minutes after ingestion and the high can last from 2–5 hours. Donald W. Reid 2017 22
  • 23. Negative side effects include nausea, sweating, itching, dry mouth and constipation. Long-term use can potentially result in anorexia, insomnia, weight loss and in some cases psychotic episodes, such as confusion, delusions and hallucinations. “Long-term daily high dose kratom consumption is also reported to induce nervousness, sleeplessness, loss of libido, constipation and the darkening of skin complexion,” Kratom.com says in its "dangerous effects" section. Donald W. Reid 2017 23 Side Effects
  • 24. Although there have been no fatalities from kratom, "The known risks and dangers of Kratom overdoses include hallucinations, delusions, listlessness, tremors, aggression, constipation and nausea," the site said. The emergency room psychiatrist said the patient who recently came in reported using kratom several times a day, every day, "because he discovered that if he stopped it he started getting withdrawal." The doctor said the man's symptoms appeared "identical to heroin withdrawal.“ Donald W. Reid 2017 24
  • 25. Upon arrival, the patient was suffering "severe depression and anxiety and emerging opiate withdrawal symptoms," including chills, aching muscles and gooseflesh, the psychiatrist said. The patient was treated to ease withdrawal symptoms and then hospitalized, according to the doctor. Like "bath salts" and "spice" — drugs that are now illegal but were legal and trendy until law enforcers and medical researchers gathered data on their dangers — kratom is under scrutiny, having been added to a Drug Enforcement Administration's list of "drugs and chemicals of concern." Donald W. Reid 2017 25
  • 26. Kratom is typically sold via the Internet, at convenience stores and head shops in the form of green leaves (whole or crushed) and green powder or pills (capsules). Individuals can ingest it orally, smoke it or drink it as a tea when in leaf form. Kratom has been sold as incense with labels on the package stating “not for human consumption,” resembling the packaging and marketing common with Spice and Bath Salts. Donald W. Reid 2017 26
  • 27. Online ads listing these types of products can be found in a variety of locations across the nation. Prices can range from $15–50 per five-gram packet or $18–25 for about 50 capsules. The DEA’s Office of Diversion Control states Kratom is a drug and chemical of concern with no legitimate medical use, but it remains legal to sell and use. Donald W. Reid 2017 27
  • 28. Kratom is traditionally and commonly consumed as a tea. It is also consumed in the form of powder packed into capsules. Some people even cook with kratom, making medicated and delicious desserts and drinks. Vaporizing it is also effective, as is smoking it, to a lesser degree. It can not be emphasized enough that inhalation, insulflation, or snorting of kratom is ill-advised and ineffective. Kratom extracts, especially those claiming to be pure alkaloids, are highly potent and could be powerfully uncomfortable in doses that are too high. Snorting a powder can lead to damage to the nasal tissue, nausea, and even unconsciousness. Donald W. Reid 2017 28
  • 29. Pump-It Powder Donald W. Reid 2017 29
  • 30. This is one of the newest synthetic products on the market sold or advertised as an “enhanced plant vitamin” with the “not-intended- for-human-consumption” label on the packaging. One of the primary ingredients in Pump-It is Geranamine, also known as Methylhexanamine, which is an amphetamine-related stimulant and decongestant found naturally in the geranium plant. Methylhexanamine hasn’t been widely studied and isn’t listed as an illegal substance under U.S. law. It’s unknown what exact components manufacturers are putting into synthetic drugs like Pump-It, which highlights once more the danger products like these pose to the general population. Donald W. Reid 2017 30 Overview
  • 31. Users have reported these products produce effects similar to other banned substances. More specifically, signs and symptoms associated with Pump-It use are consistent with effects seen in stimulant and hallucinogen drugs: Increased heart rate and body temperature, dilated pupils, sensory distortions and psychotic symptoms. The high this product produces will usually last 4-6 hours with some reports claiming highs lasting up to 12 hours, depending on the dosage taken. Donald W. Reid 2017 31 Side Effects
  • 32. Most users are in the experimental age range, between 18 and 25. “Patients will come in acting confused, maybe hallucinating, seeing things, hearing things, and acting bizarrely. Sometimes they will have chest pain or their heart will be racing. It can simulate or mimic a heart attack,” said Dr. Howard Jarvis, medical director of the Emergency Department for Cox Health Systems. “People can die from using these sorts of things. People have died using these sorts of things.” Donald W. Reid 2017 32
  • 33. This product can be snorted, injected or smoked, and the onset of effects may be delayed which may lead to taking more of the contents and increasing the chances of negative effects. Pump-It has been sold at gas stations, convenience stores, novelty shops and on the Internet, and appears to be most popular in the Midwest states. Pump-It is usually packaged in a 500 mg or 1000 mg tin container and costs around $30 for a 500 mg. Donald W. Reid 2017 33 Methods of abuse
  • 34. Reid 2017 34
  • 35. Benzo Fury Donald W. Reid 2017 35
  • 36. SCIENTIFIC TERM 6-(2-aminopropyl) benzofuran or 1- benzofuran-6-ylpropan-2-amine 6- APB or Benfamine STREET NAMES Benzo Fury, White Pearl Donald W. Reid 2017 36
  • 37. Benzo Fury, or 6-APB, is a colorless stimulant, sold in powder and pellet or tablet form, and is marketed as a “research drug” and “not suitable for human consumption.” Benzo Fury is chemically similar to amphetamines and ecstasy (MDMA) and produces effects that mimic these drugs, including alertness, increased energy, euphoria, feelings of peace and love toward others, dilated pupils, tingling feelings, tightening of jaw muscles, raised body temperature, increased heart rate, anxiety/panic attacks and paranoid/confused states. There’s very little research and literature regarding the nature and effects of Benzo Fury. Benzo Fury is usually consumed in pellet/tablet form, but can also be snorted. Donald W. Reid 2017 37 Overview
  • 38. Benzo Fury is sold primarily through websites claiming to be manufacturers or suppliers of research chemicals. The website www.benzofury.com sells Benzo Fury for 10 British Pounds (around $15-16 U.S. dollars) per pill/pellet and shipping to the U.S. is available. Benzo Fury is unscheduled in the U.S. and is currently legal in the United Kingdom. Donald W. Reid 2017 38
  • 39. Benzo Fury is chemically similar to amphetamines (like speed) and to ecstasy, so it’s reasonable to assume that they have similar effects to those drugs. Hence, people using Benzo Fury may experience: Feeling very up, alert, chatty and energised. Being ‘in tune’ with their surroundings and/or with music and colours feeling more intense. Temporary feelings of love and affection for the people they're with and for the strangers around them. Physical effects such as dilated pupils, tingling feelings, tightening of the jaw muscles, raised body temperature and the heart beating faster. See the speed and ecstasy pages for more details. Donald W. Reid 2017 39
  • 40. Benzo Fury is chemically similar to amphetamines (like speed) and to ecstasy, and so it’s reasonable to assume it has similar risks to those drugs. Hence, people using Benzo Fury may experience: Anxiety, panic attacks, confused states, agitation or aggression, paranoid feelings and even psychosis. A ‘comedown’ that may last a number of days – with feelings of lethargy and depressed mood. Donald W. Reid 2017 40
  • 41. On 10th June 2013, 5-APB, 6-APB, 5-APDB and 6-APDB was banned by the Government under a temporary class drug order. This means that most samples of ‘Benzo Fury’ will now be illegal and remain illegal for at least 12 months while drug experts consider their full range of harms. It is therefore illegal to sell, supply or give away these substances to friends. If the police suspects that you have a ‘legal high’ which contains a temporary class drug, they can confiscate the substance and dispose of it. Donald W. Reid 2017 41
  • 42. Supplying someone else, including your friends, can get you fourteen years in jail and/or an unlimited fine under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Until recently 'Benzo Fury' has been sold as a 'legal high'. Benzo Fury' is actually a brand name, and you cannot actually be sure what it contains. It may contain other substances and they could be illegal to possess or to supply to others. Donald W. Reid 2017 42
  • 44. What is Molly? Molly is often advertised as the purest form of MDMA, however its true chemical make up varies amongst areas and dealers. In the Midwest HIDTA region, most of the chemical variations marketed as Molly contain bath salts. “Bath salts” is an informal name for a family of designer drugs containing substituted cathinones, which have similar affects to amphetamines and cocaine. Donald W. Reid 2017 44
  • 46. Generally it has been seen in the powder form but now it is being seen in crystal form. Some users are carrying less than a gram. In the crystal form it is easily hidden, overlooked or not recognized as illegal narcotics by officers. 1.) Molly can be clear, white, brown or yellow brown in color. 2.) Molly can be contained in plastic bags or put into pill capsules. 3.) Molly can be crystallized, powdered or a mixture of both. For reliable testing, officers need to use MDMA test kits to test it. Donald W. Reid 2017 46
  • 47. Molly is typically found in a clear capsule filled with a white powder with a yellow or brown tint. When conducting field tests on the capsule, the SIRCHIE NARK II field test may provide a positive indication for MDMA. However, laboratory results generally have shown the actual chemical compound in Molly is Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV is a psychoactive drug with stimulant properties), Mephedrone (a synthetic stimulant drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes), or Alpha‐ Pyrrolidinopentiophenone (A‐PVP is a powerful synthetic stimulant drug which functions with approximately a quarter the potency of MDPV and the effects are said to be comparable). Donald W. Reid 2017 47
  • 48. Many users indicate their belief that Molly is the purest form of MDMA and have no knowledge that the capsules actually contain a combination of bath salts in any form. Molly has become a very popular party drug among young adults and is generally found at concerts and raves. In some areas of the Midwest HIDTA region, Molly appears to have replaced MDMA/ecstasy as the drug of choice in these arenas. There is a high risk of overdose with Molly due to the unpredictability of the mixture of MDMA and bath salts. Donald W. Reid 2017 48
  • 49. Long term effects of Molly are known to be confusion, sleep abnormalities and memory loss, especially if combined with other drugs such as Marijuana, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s website (drugabuse.org). The website also reports that heavy use of Molly can cause unregulated temperatures in the body, which can have damaging physical effects and has in some cases been a cause of death for Molly users. Donald W. Reid 2017 49
  • 50. Liquid Meth Donald W. Reid 2017 50
  • 51. Liquid meth is the newest form of methamphetamine that is reported to be surfacing throughout many areas in the United States. Manufacturers of this highly toxic drug are beginning to dissolve meth in water in order to liquefy the drug; the reason that liquid meth is quickly becoming popular with many of the individuals who are meth dealers, is because it had made transporting the toxic drug so much easier. Donald W. Reid 2017 51
  • 52. Individuals who produce meth will often place this liquid form of the drug into various different types of liquor bottles, which are regularly seen at various different ports of entry. Once the liquid meth has passed inspection and been shipped to its destination, individuals will then boil away the water; thus, only the solid form of meth will remain. Donald W. Reid 2017 52
  • 53. Liquid meth is also being applied to paper, and is sometimes sent through packages in the U.S. mail. Illinois law enforcement officials discovered this recently while investigating a suspicious package that had been sent through the postal service; after a thorough search of the package was completed, the officers reported finding sheets of paper that appeared to have had liquid meth applied to them. After doing the initial lab test in order to positively identify their findings, the officers concluded that methamphetamine users could easily tear off a piece of this meth laced paper and put it into their mouth in order to be able to get the drug into their system. Donald W. Reid 2017 53
  • 54. Liquid meth has been reported to be stronger than any of the other forms of methamphetamine that is currently available on the street; this information about liquid meth was derived from meth users who often act as drug informers to law enforcement in an effort to minimize or eliminate their pending drug charges. Several informants have told law enforcement officers that liquid meth was much "better" than any of the other forms of methamphetamine that they had ever used before. Law enforcement officials in the southern portion of the United States were so concerned about getting the word out about liquid meth, that they put together a flyer about it, in the hopes that police officers in other parts of the U.S. will begin to be on the lookout for it. Donald W. Reid 2017 54
  • 55. Although very little is known about liquid meth, the Alabama Department of Forensic Science set out to find out more about what goes into making this form of methamphetamine; this was accomplished by dissolving a sample of liquid meth that had been sent to their lab. Their findings indicated that liquid meth was made from a substance named Terofun (Pseudoephedrine HCL), which is commonly found in pill form. Donald W. Reid 2017 55
  • 56. The rest of the ingredients can be purchased at the local grocery or pharmacy; additionally, the lab technicians discovered that it would only take minutes to make a batch of liquid meth, and just over ten minutes to cook it up. Liquid meth has already become extremely popular in the eastern part of Europe, and officials in that country have reported that this form of methamphetamine is much stronger than any other form of the drug. Donald W. Reid 2017 56
  • 57. Donald W. Reid 2017 57
  • 58. Liquid meth, like all of the other forms of methamphetamine, has been reported to create a number of toxic effects in the users body, that could include but are not limited to athetosis, which is a condition that is generally characterized by tremors and involuntary spasms that often occur automatically in the body; additionally, other toxic effects of liquid meth often include chest pain and high blood pressure, which could potentially result in irreversible damage to the brain or the heart. Donald W. Reid 2017 58
  • 59. Other more common side effects of liquid meth include dilated pupils, extreme irritability, talking incessantly, disturbance in sleep patterns, extreme nervousness, and an increase in body temperature, which is commonly referred to as hyperthermia. Other long-term negative effects of liquid meth may include, but are not be limited to, damage to many of the major organs of the body, including the kidneys, liver, and the lungs; additionally, liquid meth has been reported to cause panic, paranoia, repetitive behavior patterns, and could make the user begin to feel homicidal or suicidal. Donald W. Reid 2017 59
  • 60. Methamphetamine is often dissolved in water (liquefied) for the purposes of covert transportation. It tends to be placed in familiar containers which are commonplace at the point of inspection and often not inspected. Methamphetamine is also being produced as a liquid that can be applied to paper. Authorities discovered this method after it was detected in personal mail. All that is required is to tear off a strip of paper and ingest it. Donald W. Reid 2017 60
  • 61. Large amounts of liquid meth are smuggled in from Mexico and have reportedly been intercepted at Canadian borders, smuggled in bottles disguised as tequila or other alcohol. Normal tequila is not oily looking or viscous, and generally has no bubbles after shaking it. Liquid meth appears like cooking oil after being shaken. Normal Tequila Cooking Oil Likewise, beer bubbles form quickly and dissipate to form a head, whereas meth containers have bubbles that remain suspended in the liquid long after being shaken. Donald W. Reid 2017 61
  • 62. Donald W. Reid 2017 62
  • 63. Bath Salts Donald W. Reid 2017 63
  • 64. WHAT ARE BATH SALTS? • Not the traditional bath salts used legitimately for water- softening or aroma therapeutic purposes • A central nervous stimulant used as a recreational drug • Marketed as “bath salts” or sometimes “plant food” to avoid regulation • Popular among teens and young adults • Contains manmade chemicals such as: • methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) • Mephedrone (4-MEC) • Methylone Donald W. Synopsis: Synthetic drugs (including "bath salts"). Changes the term "synthetic cannabinoid" to "synthetic drug". Adds additional chemical compounds (including some compounds sold as "bath salts") to the definition of synthetic drugs and expands the definition of synthetic drugs to include certain chemical compounds that are structurally related to synthetic drugs. Allows the board of pharmacy (board) to adopt an emergency rule to declare that a substance is a synthetic drug. Provides that the definition of synthetic drug includes a compound determined to be a synthetic drug by a rule adopted by the board. Enhances penalties for dealing in or possessing a synthetic drug if the amount of the synthetic drug is more than two grams. Donald W. Reid 2017 82
  • 83. Khat
  • 84. In the United States khat use is most prevalent among immigrants from Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen. Cathine, a Schedule IV drug and Cathinone, a Schedule I drug, are khat’s two principal active ingredients. The khat plant is illegal in California. Abuse levels are highest in cities with sizable populations of such immigrants including Boston, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Nashville, New York, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. There is a moderate degree of availability and abuse of khat among members of the Somali community in San Diego.
  • 85. Traditionally, khat is transshipped through the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, where khat is legal, and then smuggled into the United States. Khat is smuggled via a combination of human couriers and parcel delivery services. Khat will continue to be increasingly available in the U.S., and abuse of the drug
  • 86. Khat is a flowering shrub native to northeast and east Africa and the Southern Arabian Peninsula. Cathine, a Schedule IV drug and Cathinone, a Schedule I drug, are khat’s two active ingredients. Khat is a slow-growing shrub that grows to 1.5 meters tall, depending on the area and rainfall, with evergreen leaves 5-10 cm long and 1- 4cm broad.
  • 87. The stimulant effect of khat is most effective when the leaves are still fresh. Khat is consumed orally as a tea; chewed into a paste; and sometimes smoked or sprinkled on food. The leaves, twigs, and shoots of the khat shrub are most commonly chewed and stored in the cheek, as is commonly done with loose tobacco. After ingesting khat, the user experiences an immediate increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
  • 88. Symptoms of toxicity include delusions, loss of appetite, and difficulty with breathing. According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, the effects of khat generally begin to subside between 90 minutes to three hours after ingestion; however, effects of the active ingredients can last up to 24 hours. More recent research and testing have found that the shelf life is not limited, and cathinone remains active in the dried khat after months of being harvested.
  • 89. In addition to the immediate physiological effects of khat use, users may also experience: anorexia, tachycardia, hypertension, insomnia, and gastric disorders; additionally, chronic khat abuse can also result in symptoms such as physical exhaustion, violence, and suicidal depression.4 Khat can induce manic behaviors, hyperactivity, and hallucinations, and there are reports of khat-induced psychosis. Additionally, long-term users or those that have overdosed, have been known to suffer from liver damage and cardiac complications, specifically myocardial infarctions.
  • 90. Khat is traditionally sold in small bundles, with each bundle weighing approximately 100 grams. In San Diego county, khat prices range from $40 - $90 per bundle and average $60 per bundle.13 Reports indicates that prices per bundle can be negotiated by individual buyers, typically $50 instead of $60. The Somali community in San Diego has grown significantly, and khat availability indicated that the region can now easily handle 300 - 500 bundles on a daily basis, with resultant monthly street value of $540,000 - $900,000 at current prices. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol report that a bundle of khat sells for approximately $64 USD per kilogram in the U.S. and freshly packed khat can be as much as $300 to $600 USD per kilogram in the U.S.
  • 91. Donald W. Reid 2017 91 Depressants A depressant, or central depressant, is a drug that lowers neurotransmission levels, which is to depress or reduce arousal or stimulation, in various areas of the brain.[Depressants are also occasionally referred to as "downers" as they lower the level of arousal when taken. Stimulants or "uppers" increase mental and/or physical function, hence the opposite drug class of depressants is stimulants, not antidepressants.
  • 92. Donald W. Reid 2017 92 Depressants are widely used throughout the world as prescription medicines and as illicit substances. Alcohol is a very prominent depressant. Alcohol can be and is more likely to be a large problem between teenagers and young adults. When depressants are used, effects often include ataxia, anxiolysis, pain relief, sedation or somnolence, and cognitive/memory impairment, as well as in some instances euphoria, dissociation, muscle relaxation, lowered blood pressure or heart rate, respiratory depression, and anticonvulsant effects, and even complete anesthesia or death at high doses. Depressants exert their effects through a number of different pharmacological mechanisms, the most prominent of which include facilitation of GABA, and inhibition of glutamatergic or monoaminergic activity. Other examples are chemicals that modify the electrical signaling inside the body. The most prominent of these being bromides and channel blockers.
  • 94. Alcohol is primarily known as a liquid, but it can also be whipped, solidified, and practically vaporized. But now it's available in powdered form — a product called "Palcohol" that was just approved by the U.S. government. Alcohol powder is a molecular encapsulated alcohol that produces an alcoholic drink or meal when mixed with water. Because alcohol can be absorbed in a sugar derivate, it can be delivered as a powder and/or packed into capsules. Surprisingly this is not new, a US patent for powdered alcohol was filed in 1974. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 94
  • 95. •Reconstituted: Alcohol powder can be added to water to make an alcoholic beverage. •Oral: Alcohol powder is useful with capsules to eliminate the burning taste of rectified spirit upon ingestion. •Nebulizer: Alcohol powder produced through molecular encapsulated with cyclodextrin can be used with a nebulizer •Inhaled or Snorted. Donald W. Reid 2017 95
  • 97. An individual can pour alcohol over dry ice and inhale it directly or with a straw, or make a DIY vaporizing kit using bike pumps. The alcohol of choice is poured into a bottle, the bottle is corked, and the bicycle pump needle is poked through the top of the cork. Air is pumped into the bottle to vaporize the alcohol, and the user inhales. This can also be accomplished by using a nebulizer device and placing alcohol in the medicine reservoir. Donald W. Reid 2017 97
  • 98. In 2004, the U.S. saw a brief emergence of the trend with the availability of the AWOL (Alcohol Without Liquid) device, but the product was quickly banned in the U.S. and lost its following. Nearly a decade later, clinicians are seeing evidence that the practice is gaining some traction — and not just among college kids and adolescent risk takers. It’s popular among people who want to lose weight and don’t want the calories that come from consuming alcohol. Donald W. Reid 2017 98
  • 99. Donald W. Reid 2017 99
  • 100. When alcohol vapor is inhaled, it goes straight from the lungs to the brain and bloodstream, getting the individual drunk very quickly. Because the alcohol bypasses the stomach and liver, it isn’t metabolized, and the alcohol doesn’t lose any of its potency. Drinkers feel the effects almost instantly, but the risks are also much higher. People who smoke their alcohol are at a much greater risk of getting alcohol poisoning and potentially overdosing. When people drink too much alcohol, they tend to vomit. Getting sick is one of the ways that prevents an alcohol overdose, but when alcohol circumvents the stomach and liver, the body can’t expel it. Donald W. Reid 2017 100
  • 101. It’s also much harder to know just how much alcohol you’re consuming in one sitting if you’re not stringently measuring. If a cup of alcohol is poured into a bottle and then vaporized, the drinker cannot tell if they are inhaling a few sips or the whole cup, since the liquid remains in the bottle. “It’s also terrible for your lungs and nasal passages,” says medical officials. “Your lungs are not meant to inhale something that can turn back into a liquid. When you think of liquid in the lungs, you think of drowning.” Donald W. Reid 2017 101
  • 102. Waxy Marijuana Donald W. Reid 2017 102
  • 103. Open sources indicate that waxy marijuana or wax marijuana is the purest form of cannabis. It contains anywhere from 82- 99% THC making it several times more potent than a marijuana bud on a cannabis plant which usually contains 5- 28% THC. One hit of wax is supposedly equal to 1-2 full cannabis joints and is reported as being more clear and longer lasting than average marijuana. Wax marijuana is also a medical marijuana product. Typical wax marijuana is golden in color and crumbly; though texture may vary based on type. Donald W. Reid 2017 103
  • 104. “DABBING” is the term used for those who are smoking concentrated cannabis either in wax, oil, or budder form. “Do you want a dab?” or “Let’s dab” are two of the more common phrases you may hear regarding those who “dab”. The term “Dabs” became popular in the Western medical marijuana states to refer to the smoking of butane hash oil, also known as butane honey oil, or simply BHO. Other names include “honey oil,” “red oil,” “jelly-butane hash,” and similar concoctions. Donald W. Reid 2017 104
  • 105. The “butane” part of BHO refers to the solvent used to extract the cannabis resin from the plant. A large glass tube or PVC pipe is packed with cannabis, usually the discarded “shake” left from trimming the buds , increasingly actual “bud” is used. Liquid butane is forced through the tube and the butane strips the resins from the plant to collect in a container. The container is left uncovered to allow the butane evaporate away. What’s left is a very potent form of hash oil. The extracted cannabinoids are often called hashish, but they are not hashish in the traditional sense of the word. They are “cannabis concentrates.” So hash oil, budder, earwax or most any form of concentrated cannabis processed in this manner could be considered a dab. Donald W. Reid 2017 105
  • 106. Experienced pot smokers will often pass out after taking a hit of dab. In addition dab inhalation is followed by intense coughing fits. Proponents of marijuana use stand by dabs safe use. “It’s not that the hashish preparations are any more dangerous, it is the same non-toxic cannabis, after all. It’s simply more potent, so bottom line, you don’t need to take these big lung-buster hits like you’re trying to win the ‘clear the bong’ contest.” Donald W. Reid 2017 106
  • 107. So let’s follow this thinking…it’s no more dangerous than smoking pot, but pot doesn’t usually make a person pass out leading to the potential of smashing ones head on something as they fall. So in this definition of more dangerous it’s possible that passing out and a hacking cough count as more dangerous. In addition there is some speculation that the products used to extract the resins (butane, isopropyl alcohol, chloroform, etc.) may leave residual chemicals in the oil that when smoked could cause other damage to one’s health, especially the lungs. Donald W. Reid 2017 107
  • 108. An additional issue that is cropping up steadily in states allowing “medical marijuana” use is explosions due to the butane method of making dabs. Butane is a heavier-than- air gas that moves to the floor near pilot lights, electrical outlets, discarded cigarette butts, etc. Combining highly explosive gases with unknowledgeable, potentially stoned people, who place the butane mixture in hidden, often unvented, enclosures while waiting for the butane to evaporate, is a recipe for disaster. This is certainly an issue first responders need to be aware of when responding to or investigating fires/explosions. Donald W. Reid 2017 108

  • 110. Marijuana candy Donald W. Reid 2017 110
  • 111. Marijuana candy is becoming very popular in States that have legalized Marijuana and also becoming more available in States that have not. It is dangerous because of its potency, and because it resembles hard or gummy candy or chocolate. poses a greater risk to children that may accidentally ingest the drug. Marijuana candy is made with highly concentrated marijuana oil or extract. The hard candies are made like any other candy using corn syrup, water, sugar, coloring and flavoring. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 111
  • 112. Marijuana oil or extract containing concentrated THC is added to the mixture. The oil is made by grinding marijuana into a fine powder, heating it in vegetable oil, and passing it through cheesecloth or other types of filters to remove any solids. Recipes are available on the internet. The process to make marijuana chocolate is similar. The homemade candy is made by mixing marijuana oil with melted chocolate. Large scale medical marijuana production is taking place in Canada, where chocolate plants are licensed to manufacture marijuana chocolate. Smaller scale production occurs in the United States in jurisdictions where medical marijuana is legal. Donald W. Reid 2017 112
  • 113. Liquid THC Donald W. Reid 2017 113
  • 114. When producing liquid THC the entire cannabis plant, rather than just the buds or leaves, is used resulting in a more profitable product. There are various methods on the internet to extract the liquid THC , one of the most common being Butane extraction, producing an end product that ranges between 82% to 99% pure THC. Liquid THC can also be purchased ready for use over the internet. Because liquid THC is odorless and typically sold in small quantities, the trafficker benefits from moving a small bulk, high-value commodity, rather than the relatively high bulk marijuana leaves and buds. Liquid THC also provides the trafficker various concealment alternatives. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 114
  • 115. Liquid THC is ingested via a vaporizer, similar to an e- cigarette device. Liquid THC provides the user an almost instant ‘high’. Some users also experience hallucinations. The vaporizers release no odor or smoke when used. Liquid THC can also be used during food preparation and is often sold in food items such as cookies, brownies and other baked goods. Because it is odorless, the oil can be combined with any variety of foods and go virtually unnoticed. Donald W. Reid 2017 115
  • 116. Transdermal THC patches Donald W. Reid 2017 116
  • 117. Marijuana is lipophilic, which means that it can be dissolved into a fat-soluble substance and readily enter cell membranes. In other words, it can be effective when applied topically on the skin. Marijuana can be used transdermally to relieve pain from many conditions. Medical marijuana can be a balm, lotion, ointment or rubbing alcohol solution. In the old days when people only had plants to use for medication, many patients would soak marijuana leaves in alcohol and apply them as a poultice to an arthritic or swollen joint. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 117
  • 118. Many substances pass easily through the skin and that is why transdermal medicine has been more evident in contemporary medicine. When it comes to marijuana's anti-inflammatory effect people have long experienced this in action when they have applied marijuana to their skin. Patients with arthritis, muscle and joint pain can testify to the easing of the aches and pains that they feel on a regular basis. Topical marijuana preparations usually provide only local relief and do not have effect on the brain, meaning there is usually no high. Donald W. Reid 2017 118
  • 119. Zannie Air Freshener Donald W. Reid 2017 119
  • 120. ZANNIE, phenazepam, a product marketed on the internet as a relaxing air freshener contains a prescription tranquilizer similar to Valium and Xanax. Phenazepam is a benzodiazepine drug, which was developed and produced in Russia. In 1975 phenazepam was first synthesized in the USSR. In 2003 phenazepam is reported as a new recreational drug in Finland. In 2007 phenazepam is available in the UK as a powder. Donald W. Reid 2017 120
  • 121. In 2010 phenazepam was found in the United States as the psychoactive ingredient in blotter prints submitted to the DEA as suspected LSD. In isolated cases it has been around in the U.S. since 2010, but it now appears to be hitting main stream synthetic drug sites being sold over the internet. Donald W. Reid 2017 121
  • 122. Onset within 1 hr. Effects may last several days. Powerful, long-acting benzodiazepine. Compared with other benzodiazepines, overdoses with phenazepam are both more likely and more problematic for these reasons. Phenazepam is exceptionally potent. Active doses start at 0.5 mg. Donald W. Reid 2017 122
  • 123. The visual appearance of a dangerous dose is not impressive. The visual size of a 2 mg (0.0002) alprazolam (Xanax) bar is equivalent to a 0.5 gram (500 mg) of phenazepam. If the user is accustomed to dealing with benzodiazepines in the form of tablets or bars and attempts to 'eyeball' an amount of phenazepam that looks similar, or is even a tenth as large, they will take a massive overdose. Likewise, snorting a 'line' of phenazepam similar in size to a line of cocaine or heroin is likely to produce an overdose. Donald W. Reid 2017 123
  • 124. Compared to prescription benzodiazepines that have been diverted from regulated channels, phenazepam is inexpensive, and rarely sold in quantities of less than 100 mg. Any user who can afford to buy this drug will be buying a dose capable of causing prolonged coma. Phenazepam's effects are often delayed by 2-3 hours. The inexperienced user, noticing no effects within the first hour, may believe they have taken too little and re-dose, resulting in an overdose. Phenazepam's 60 hour half-life makes dosing mistakes hard to recover from. The overdose will last for days, possibly weeks. Donald W. Reid 2017 124
  • 125. Death can easily occur if Zannie is used along with CNS depressant drugs, opiates, alcohol, or barbiturates. It has had some really bad effects when a person takes it with other central nervous system depressants. Side effects include: hiccups, dizziness, loss of coordination, drowsiness, and amnesia which can be quite pronounced at high doses. Abrupt stoppage following prolonged use results in: restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, seizures, convulsions, and death. Donald W. Reid 2017 125
  • 126. Two overdose deaths occurred in the United States in 2010. The first occurred in Georgia in September 2010, an 18-year-old died after using a combination of phenazepam and oxycodone. Three other individuals in the same incident were hospitalized. The second death occurred in October 2010 in Charleston, West Virginia. A 42-year-old man died after ingesting both phenazepam and poppy tea. Donald W. Reid 2017 126
  • 127. The Federal Analog Act of the U.S. applies only to substances classified as Schedule I and Schedule II. Controlled benzodiazepines under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act are classified as Schedule IV. Phenazepam is a non-scheduled drug in the United States. In Russia where phenazepam is legal it is used in the treatment of neurological disorders such as epilepsy, alcohol withdrawal syndrome and insomnia. Phenazepam is a long acting benzodiazepine with anti anxiety, euphoric, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and hypnotic (sleep- inducing) effects. Donald W. Reid 2017 127
  • 128. Its English name is a transliteration of the Russian name with alternate spellings: 'fenazepam', 'phenazeram'. It is also used as a premedication before surgery. Mark Ryan, Director of Louisiana Poison Control Center is concerned that the product could be used as a predatory (date rape) drug. Phenazepam creates a type of sedation in which a person can't remember what happened. Donald W. Reid 2017 128

  • 130. Users reported several administration routes. Injection, snorting, oral ingestion, rectal absorption, and cigarettes dipped in liquid phenazepam solution and then smoked. Smoking adds an additional health issue due to the fumes containing chlorine, bromine, and nitrogen oxide/nitrogen dioxide. All are toxic. Donald W. Reid 2017 130
  • 132. This device is not your typical vaporizer. It use a specially prepared liquid to administer psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, to patients enrolled in the medicinal cannabis program. By using a THC based liquid, there are no by products released while smoking except water vapor. Donald W. Reid 2017 132
  • 133. Medical Cannabis Management began distributing the Cannabis e-cigarette to medical cannabis dispensaries and to physicians in California at the end of March 2013. The CannaCig vaporizes a small amount of THC containing liquid. The vapor is then inhaled by the user resulting in immediate effects as compared to Marinol which takes up to an hour reach full systemic effects. Marinol also has an expensive price tag while the new device sells for much less. Donald W. Reid 2017 133
  • 134. The use of a THC containing liquid eliminates the need for both the user and the dispensaries to keep actual marijuana on hand. The oil has the exact effect as Marinol and raw cannabis with less propensity for diversion of the drug and other crimes related to illicit drug use. We can also expect to see a standardization of THC dosing through quality control measures not available with raw cannabis production. As the CannaCig only vaporizes the oil, nothing is burned and no smoke is produced. Current devices used for vaporization of marijuana leaves (vaporizers) are expensive and unreliable as a THC delivery device. Donald W. Reid 2017 134
  • 135. The electronic cigarette heats the hash oil from a lithium- ion battery and the narcotic is transmitted to the recipient in the form of vapor. Individuals using this method appear to be smoking an electronic cigarette for its legitimate purpose and there is little to no odor commonly associated with the burning/smoking of marijuana. Donald W. Reid 2017 135
  • 136. Alcohol Enema Donald W. Reid 2017 136
  • 137. Using an alcohol enema involves placing a small tube into someone's rectum and pouring alcohol into the colon. Because the alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, the recipient gets drunk faster. Our stomachs and livers have an enzyme known as alcohol dehydrogenase that breaks down ethanol to make it less toxic for our bodies, said Atlanta gastroenterologist Dr. Preston Stewart. Donald W. Reid 2017 137 Overview
  • 138. The lower gastrointestinal tract doesn't have that enzyme, so alcohol molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream through the lining of the colon. Eventually the alcohol would still make its way to the liver, Stewart said, but the high alcohol content would overwhelm the organ. "It's extremely dangerous." No one is sure when alcohol enemas first appeared on the social scene or how frequently they're being used. Donald W. Reid 2017 138
  • 139. The effects have been fatal in at least one case. An autopsy performed after the death of a 58-year-old Texas man in 2004 showed he had been given an enema with enough sherry to have a blood alcohol level of 0.47 percent. Negligent homicide charges were later dropped against his wife, who said she gave him the enema. Donald W. Reid 2017 139 Side Effects
  • 140. Cheeba Chews Donald W. Reid 2017 140
  • 141. cheebachews states on their website cheebachews.com revealed an assortment of taffy products which are produced in both a “Medicated” and “Unmedicated” versions. According to the manufacturer, the Medicated products contain anywhere from 70mg to 175mg of THC and the Unmedicated product contains hemp oil. Both products weigh approximately 10 grams and contain several other ingredients. The manufacturer makes a claim that their product is a “super food” and provides a list of health benefits attributed to the high quality of ingredients contained in their product. Officers should be aware of this product due to its ability to be easily confused with regular taffy or candy. Donald W. Reid 2017 141 Overview

  • 144. A pill known as Marinol has been legal and approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use with a prescription anywhere in America since 1985. It's active ingredient? Dronabinol, better known as THC, the primary psychoactive element of the cannabis plant. "Marinol provides standardized THC concentrations, does not contain the other 400 uncharacterized substances found in smoked marijuana, such as carcinogens or fungal spores, and is not associated with the quick high of smoked marijuana," said Neil Hirsch, a spokesman for Marinol manufacturer Solvay Pharmaceuticals. • 145. Marinol is similar in appearance to vitamin E pills. THC pills Vitamin E Donald W. Reid 2017 145
  • 146. THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects, and cannabis can be used to treat pain by altering transmitter release on dorsal root ganglion of the spinal cord and in the periaqueductal gray. Other effects include relaxation, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation. THC has marked antiemetic properties, and may also reduce aggression in certain subjects. Donald W. Reid 2017 146 Side Effects
  • 147. Crunk Donald W. Reid 2017 147
  • 148. Now, the newest fad includes a "high" created right at home from ingredients that can be found in any medicine cabinet and refrigerator in your own home. It's called a Crunk Concoction, and it's a deadly juice that teens are downing in the hopes of getting high. In January, a Hawaii man, Chucky Dias Oliveira made the headlines after he died in his sleep after drinking the concoction called "Crunk." "When they don't understand the dangers of it, they're more willing to take the risk. And we see the effects of it," Hawaii Police Dept. Det. Ian Lee Loy said. Crunk is referred to in rap music and urban slang. It means a lot of things, including a drink that mixes soda or other beverage with an over-the-counter cough syrup and crushed prescription pain killers. Donald W. Reid 2017 148
  • 149. Crunk produces an intense rush that's proven dangerous. A "Crunking high" can cause blackouts and breathing problems. It slurs speech and motor skills. "A lot of prescription drugs act like narcotics," said Reece. "They're central nervous system depressants, so it slows down the heart and the central nervous system. Just like enough alcohol can cause alcohol poisoning and stop the heart." Drinkers experience a sense of whoozy euphoria, Stewart said, one that can be incredibly addictive, not to mention deadly. Overdoses can lead to difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and death. And prolonged exposure to the painkillers can do lasting damage to one's liver and other organs. Donald W. Reid 2017 149
  • 150. "I had a fourth-grader tell me that he had seen it in the schools. They can buy pills for $3 to $5," said Officer Robert Stewart, who speaks regularly at area schools and events to discuss drug abuse. Crunk is a deceptively sweet concoction, he said, consisting of over-the-counter cough syrup and a lemon-lime flavored soft drink (such as Sprite), mixed with crushed up prescription painkillers. "It's popular due to the soft drink being palatable to the kids," added Detective Ian Lee Loy. "It's sweet, it's tasty, and it affords the medium to ingest the narcotic." Donald W. Reid 2017 150

  • 152. One new way young adults are becoming intoxicated is by mixing Vodka and Gummy Bears together. The Gummy Bears will soak up the Vodka, and then teenagers eat the Gummy Bears and become intoxicated. The Gummy Bears that have been mixed in Vodka can be odorless. The person eating them has no idea how much alcohol they are putting into their system. You can find step-by-step instructions on how to make the gummies on Youtube. Donald W. Reid 2017 152
  • 153. Hand sanitizer Donald W. Reid 2017 153
  • 154. Hand sanitizer is the latest in a string of household products used to induce intoxication, and it has public health officials worried, as a few squirts of hand sanitizer could equal a couple of shots of hard liquor. "This is a rapidly emerging trend," Dr. Cyrus Rangan, medical toxicology consultant for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, said in a news conference today. About 2,600 cases have been reported in California since 2010, but it's become a national problem. Donald W. Reid 2017 154
  • 155. "It's not just localized to us," Helen Arbogast, an injury prevention coordinator in the trauma program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, told ABC News today. "Since 2009 we can see on YouTube it's in all regions of the country. We see it in the South, in the Midwest, in the East." Liquid hand sanitizer is 62 to 65 percent ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, the main ingredient in beer, wine and spirits, making it 120-proof. To compare, a bottle of vodka is 80- proof. Donald W. Reid 2017 155
  • 156. "A few swallows is all it takes to get a person to get the intoxicated effects of alcohol," Rangan said. Doctors said ingesting hand sanitizer can produce the same side effects as consuming large amounts of alcohol - slurred speech, unresponsiveness, possibly falling into a coma state. Rangan warned that long-term use could lead to brain, liver and kidney damage. Donald W. Reid 2017 156
  • 157. Teenagers use salt to break up the alcohol from the sanitizer to get a more powerful dose. These distillation instructions can be found on the Internet in tutorial videos that describe in detail how to do it. Other troubling videos have surfaced online showing kids laughing as they purposely ingested sanitizer, many boasting of fulfilling a dare. Donald W. Reid 2017 157
  • 158. "Methods to distill it can be found through friends and the Internet, but straight ingestion of the product without distillation is also common," Rangan said in a news release. Dr. Sean Nordt, director of toxicology at the USC Los Angeles County Emergency Department, told ABC News it used to get reports of children accidentally consuming small amounts of hand sanitizer, but now the trend is toward purposeful ingestion by those who cannot purchase or obtain alcohol legally. Donald W. Reid 2017 158
  • 159. ""We get worried about children getting into these, but it is different from an adolescent who is trying to drink half a bottle to get drunk," said Nordt. And it's a tough problem to combat, as hand sanitizer is inexpensive and seems to be available at the entrance of every door. Young people can buy pocket-size bottles, which can be the equivalent of two-three shots of hard liquor, or huge tubs at most markets and stores. Donald W. Reid 2017 159
  • 160. Arbogast said foam hand sanitizer was a safer option to keep around the house, but "any hand sanitizer will be at risk for alcohol poisoning, as the foam type is still 62 percent ethyl alcohol," she told today's news conference. Rangan cautioned parents to treat hand sanitizers "like we treat any medication in the home as far as safety is concerned. Keep it out of reach, out of sight, out of mind when not in use." Nordt said he hoped parents and store clerks would become more vigilant and monitor the sales of hand sanitizers. ""Most stores will sell it to an adolescent without thinking twice," Nordt told ABC News. "Maybe now they will." Donald W. Reid 2017 160
  • 162. According to those that post in the online forums, “weed butter” is a much safer method to ingest marijuana than smoking it. To make “weed butter,” marijuana is mixed with regular butter and brought to a boil which causes the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to bond with the butter. This bonding makes the THC more potent. The roughage (i.e. stems, leaves and buds) is then strained out, and the liquid is cooled and stored as butter. The “weed butter” is then used for baked goods, brownies, cakes, etc, which is either sold or consumed by the individual.
  • 163. THC, which is the chemical that gives marijuana’s desired effects, needs a carrier to get it into the bloodstream and THC is not water. This means that when heated or even just mixed with water, it does not chemically mix into a homogenous substance. Water and THC float separately, but THC is soluble in fats and alcohol. Butter and oils are loaded with fat and serve as a perfect carrier for the THC to go straight to the bloodstream. Since “weed butter” is blended with a soluble fat, it will stay with the body for longer periods of time (up to months) after ingesting it. A stronger version of “weed butter” can be made by substituting marijuana with hashish.
  • 165. “7H”, “K2”, and “Spice” are products containing synthetic cannabinoid chemicals resembling THC, the primary element in marijuana.1Sprayed or added to dried plant material to create herbal smoking products and blends, substances comprised of these synthetic cannabinoids are an emerging trend that allows marijuana users a legal substitute to the drug, and law enforcement a hurdle in detection and deterrent enforcement.
  • 166. Synthetic Cannabinoids products are psychoactive chemical and herbal blends legal in the U.S. which, when ingested, create effects similar to marijuana. Initially developed for research on the effects of cannabis on the brain and for pain management, “7H”, “Spice”, “7th heaven”, or “K2” is currently sold as herbal smoking blends, incense, or potpourri in smoke shops, gas stations, and on the internet.2 Cannabinoids are becoming increasingly popular as a legal and readily available alternative to marijuana.
  • 167. Currently, there is little data available to determine the number of users in the U.S.; however, information indicates that the demand for the product is increasing, most notably by marijuana smokers who may fear drug testing and by young adults and teenagers experimenting with the drug due to its difficult detection and belief that there are little or no adverse effects. Common field test kits, canines, and routine urine tests do not detect cannabinoids; therefore, marijuana smokers may feel that it is a “safe” alternative to marijuana.
  • 168. Cannabinoids are typically packaged in re-sealable pouches and are available in 3-5 gram packs and 400-800 milligram packs ranging in prices from $20-$50 per pack. Bulk purchases via the internet are also common. Most products are sold as incense or herbal smoking blends produced from various dried plants, but some websites sell raw chemicals that can be administered directly to the plant material. This product is ingested by mixing the material with regular tobacco or marijuana and inhaling the smoke from a joint or pipe.
  • 169. Since synthetic cannabinoids are several times more potent than marijuana, the adverse effects after ingesting the product can cause hallucinations, anxiety, heightened blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, tremors and seizures. There are few studies indicating what – if any – long term effects exist. In addition, common field test kits, canines, and routine urine tests do not detect cannabinoids, making it difficult for law enforcement to detect its presence.

  • 172. Lip Balm Donald W. Reid 2017 172
  • 173. There is currently no evidence that supports the reported “high” obtained by users using lip balm in this manner. The information is included for informational purposes only. This may be attempted by some only because of the internet claims. Hopefully this information will allow a parent, teacher or other authority figure to be alerted that this person is attempting to get “high” before actual drugs are explored. Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 173
  • 174. A popular brand of lip balm that creates a cool, tingly sensation is apparently being used by some people on a place other than their lips to enhance the experience of already being high or drunk. According to Urban Dictionary, “beezin’,”the practice of putting Burt’s Bees, which has a peppermint oil in it, on one’s eyelids, produces “a freaky yet pleasurable tingling sensation.” Donald W. • 175. Furadan in Marijuana Grows Donald W. Reid 2017 175
  • 176. Plants in illegal Marijuana fields have been reported to have been treated with carbofuran, a pesticide known under the trade name Furadan (most common), and others. Formerly a U.S. registered pesticide, in March 2009 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revoked all food tolerances for carbofuran, prohibiting its use on crops intended for human consumption. An eventual ban in the U.S. is anticipated. Carbofuran is highly toxic to vertebrates – a quarter teaspoon (1 ml) is potentially fatal to humans. A cholinesterase inhibitor (neurotoxin), carbofuran exposure can result from inhalation, ingestion, eye, or skin contact. 130 Overview Donald W. Reid 2017 176
  • 177. The precautionary statement published by the manufacturer prior to the EPA food tolerance revocation states people handling Furadan should minimally wear long-sleeve shirts, long pants, chemical-resistant gloves, protective eyewear, and use a respirator with a canister approved for pesticides. Symptoms of poisoning include weakness, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, tight chest, blurred vision, constricted pupils, and abnormal saliva flow. Seek immediate medical attention if you are exposed to carbofuran and experience any symptoms. Donald W. Reid 2017 177
  • 178. Formerly available in the U.S. in pellet form, carbofuran is most commonly encountered as a concentrated purple or pink liquid. Marijuana growers use plastic bottles or other containers to mix the concentrate with water. The solution is applied to marijuana plants by wiping or spraying. Donald W. Reid 2017 178
  • 180. The method for extracting hash oil has its basis in an industrial extraction method known as Supercritical Fluid Extraction. It uses totally over-the-counter butane gas (8 oz can) as the extraction solvent, and requires nothing even remotely suspicious or difficult to purchase. The only other thing needed is a section one and a half feet long and 1 3/4" diameter PVC pipe and two end caps. Threaded PVC is not necessary. For reasons not yet clear, butane (and perhaps other gas/solvents with similar ultra-low-boiling properties) selectively solvate the fraction(s) of cannabis oils, pulling out only an amber "honey oil" and leaving the vegetative oils, waxes, chlorophyll, etc. behind in the plant matter. Donald W. Reid 2017 180
  • 181. You may notice in one of the PVC end caps a single small hole is drilled in the center. This hole will be sized to snugly receive the little outlet nozzle of a butane can. In the other PVC end cap 5 or 6 small holes will be drilled, clustered in the center (like a pepper shaker). This is the drainage end of the pipe. A piece of paper towel or coffee filter may be found inside the PVC for filtration. PVC pipe may be found with plant matter that has been pulverized into a coarse powder. Donald W. Reid 2017 181 Observations
  • 182. Pipe may be found mounted over an “oil” collection vessel. The process takes a whole 8-oz can of butane. A spark at this point in the process would spell disaster since the PVC is now an incendiary explosive device that is leaking butane. The butane moves down the pipe. When the extraction, containing butane, gets to the bottom it will drain into the collection vessel. One may notice a pale, glowing yellow-green- gold hue of the oil extract. Donald W. Reid 2017 182
  • 183. Over approximately five to eight minutes, the butane extract will finish draining from the pipe to the receiving vessel. There is a lot of residual butane still evaporating from within the pipe. A recently made batch will show a stream of butane fumes coming from the top hole of the PVC. Butane has a very low-boiling point and is volatile. Any residual butane will likely begin boiling at ambient (room) temperature. It takes about 20 minutes for most of the butane to evaporate from the PVC pipe. Remember, butane is heavier than air and therefore collects in areas open to pilot lights on water heaters and furnaces. Donald W. Reid 2017 183
  • 184. After the butane evaporates the oil is redissolve in anhydrous or high 99% isopropanol (isopropyl) alcohol, and then poured into a vial and left to sit out for a day or two allowing the alcohol to evaporate. Any change to the temperature of the solution before the butane is totally evaporated will cause the oil to "superboiled" out of the containment vessel. The final product is a deep yellow-amber colored oil. Since there is some concern about the possibility of a PVC residue in the final product some individuals will use steel instead of PVC. Donald W. Reid 2017 184
  • 185. If responders are called to an occupancy where materials and paraphernalia believed to be used for hash oil extraction are found, they should immediately exit the structure and call law enforcement. Ultimately a bomb squad may need to respond, especially if homemade extraction tubes resembling pipe bombs are found. It is important to note as of the date of this alert, operations that have been discovered have not resulted in pipe bombs being found; what was found were, in fact, extractor tubes. This does not mean that eventually pipe bombs will not be found. With the understanding that drug dealers often use booby traps against law enforcement and competing drug dealers, it is wise to err on the side of safety and take all necessary safety precautions. These include but are not limited to the proper use of PPE and SCBA as appropriate Donald W. Reid 2017 185 Dangers

  • 187. Sirchie Nark II Test Kit MDPV is a synthetic stimulant recognized as a schedule I substance. This specific field test will presumptively identify MDPV by turning a distinct Yellow to Yellow/Green color. Commonly found as a white to tan powder, this substance is being sold as everyday products like bath salts, stain remover, plant food or glass cleaner. Of the “bath salt” products on the market, this is the most popular chemical configuration currently and all testing should start with this specific field test. Like all our NARK II narcotic field tests, the MDPV Reagent is meant for presumptive field drug testing. For Sale to Law Enforcement Only! Donald W. Reid 2017 187
  • 188. SIRCHIE NARK II TEST KIT Mephedrone is the 2nd “bath salt” configuration of this synthetic stimulant found on the street. Not as common as the MDPV, we recommend conducting this test only after you have conducted the MDPV Reagent and not received a positive. This presumptive field test will positively identify Mephedrone with an IMMEDIATE Purple color after breakage and agitation of the 3rd ampoule. This product will again be sold as standard household substances like bath salts, stain remover, plant food or glass cleaner. Like all our NARK II narcotic field tests, the Mephedrone Reagent is meant for presumptive field drug testing. For Sale to Law Enforcement Only! Donald W. Reid 2017 188
  • 189. Donald W. Reid 2017 189 Shake and Bake or One Pot Meth Making
  • 190. Donald W. Reid 2017 190 The One-pot method means that meth cooks can make meth in one sealed container which is typically turned to cause the reaction needed to turn several toxic ingredients into eth. It allows for smaller batches to be made but is also very dangerous
  • 191. Donald W. Reid 2017 191 The chemical reaction going on inside the container (which can be anything from a Coleman fuel can to a soda bottle) causes an extremely high amount of pressure to build up within the container after being shaken; this method can cause an explosion.
  • 192. Donald W. Reid 2017 192 Shake and Bake Meth Making materials The biggest danger in relation to this method is the fact that it is fast and portable. So portable in fact, that it is most common to find people using this method to make meth in their car. They generally drive around while the meth is being made to release the fumes and when the process is over, some 40 minutes later, they simply chuck the used container filled with toxic chemical residue out of the window. Aside from the environmental impact this has, it also poses a hazard to children that naturally want to explore and pick up the things they find..
  • 193. Donald W. Reid 2017 193 The remnants of the chemicals that remain in the container are generally muddy brown in color. If you suspect someone of making meth using this method please contact authorities as soon as possible. This type of meth lab is really a mobile ticking time bomb. If you come across a discarded container used in one-pot (shake and bake) meth making do not touch it – contact the police department to discard it, as they will likely need to have a haz-mat team clean up the mess left behind
