5. INTRODUCTION
Milling is the process of removing metal
from the work piece by using multipoint
cutter.
The machine used for this process is
known as milling machine.
When the workpiece is fed against the
cutter , the metal is removed in the form of
chips.
Good surface finish is obtained by milling.

7. PLAIN MILLING MACHINE
As the spindle of this machine is
horizontal , it is also known as horizontal
milling machine . This machine has the
following important parts :
1. Base
2. Column
3. Knee
4. Saddle
5. Table

9. Parts description
 BASE :
it is heavy casting made of grey cast iron . It
supports all other parts of the machine.
 COLUMN:
A vertical hollow column is mounted on the base .
The column has guide ways on the top and its front face .
 KNEE:
The knees mounted on the column . The saddle can
slide on these guide ways.
 SADDLE :
The saddle is mounted on the guide ways of the
knee . The saddle can be moved towards or away from
the column.

10. TABLE :
The table is mounted on the dovetail
guide ways of the saddle. The table has T-
slots on its top surface to clamp the
workpiece.
SPINDLE :
It is mounted at the front face the
column. The front end of the spindle is
called nose. It has a hole with morse taper.
OVER ARM :
It is mounted In the guide ways on
the top of the column. The arbor is
supported by the yoke inserted into the
over arm.

12. CONSTRUCTION OF PLANO MILLER
Construction of plano miller is similar to
double housing planer.
The machine has a fixed bed.
The bed has longitudinal guide ways.
The table reciprocates longitudinally
over its guide ways.
There are two vertical columns one
each on the sides of the bed.
