This document discusses a finger millet (ragi) cultivation project in Balrampur District, Chhattisgarh, India. It notes that ragi is an important crop for food security, especially during drought years. It is cultivated using direct seeding or nursery bed transplanting methods. Self-help groups of women farmers were trained and involved in activities like land preparation, transplanting, weeding, harvesting for ragi cultivated on 1000 hectares across 10 villages. The project aims to increase productivity, develop value-added processing, and market ragi products. Production data from 2018-19 and 2019-20 is provided for the major ragi cultivating blocks in the district.

2. Introduction
Finger Millet (Ragi)
It is an oldest food known to man kind.
 Sixth most important grain in the world sustaining one
third of the world population.
 An Important Millet crop in the Tribal Area of
Chhattishgarh .
Balrampur District is the one of the tribal dominated
region of chhattisgarh.
 Where more than 80 % of the population is tribes.
It forms an important ingredient of food security
particularly in drought year.

Demand of the millet based processed food has shown
an increased trend in the urban areas due to inherent
nutritional and Medicinal characteristics of the millets

Ragi seed is cultivated by following two
methods in the government land for

1. Direct Seeded Ragi.
2. Nursery Bed Preparation and then Line
