2. Why might you need a new website?
1. Your company has evolved and your website is no longer an accurate representation of your brand
2. You haven’t updated your website in a while so it’s out of date
3. Pivot - your company is changing direction or narrowing their focus
4. Evolution - your company has new offerings or has switched target customers
5. You have a website that you have previously used as a sales tool but now you
want your website to help bring in leads
6. Your company has grown to the point that you need an intranet for your
internal operations or customer portal
7. You have just started a business and this is your 1st marketing tool
3. How much will it cost and how fast can it be
implemented?
There are three main approaches to developing a new website:
1. DIY (Do It Yourself)
a. Using a platform like Squarespace, Wix, or Weebly you can create a website
yourself
2. Template or Theme
a. With the help of a software development company, you can pick from a list of
pre-designed themes or templates and add in images and copy that work for
your offering
3. Custom
a. Using a software development company with a full team of designers,
strategists and developers you collaborate to develop a unique
website that is designed with your end goals in mind
4. DIY (Do It Yourself)
This approach is recommended for start ups or new business that needs to get a one or
two page website up quickly to legitimize their business or launch a product. This is also a
great option for those on a tight budget with good technical and creative skills and lots of
time.
Pros
● Inexpensive
● Relatively easy to learn
Cons
● A lot of your time required to put this together
● Limited customization
● No branding, copywriting or marketing expertise provided
● Find/purchase or provide all your own images
● No scalability
● No SEO optimization
5. Theme / Template
This is a good idea if you have a budget less than $15,000. It’s a good short term solution
for a small business that needs to have very basic information about their goods and/or
services.
Pros
● More affordable than a custom solution
● There are a lot of themes available to choose from
● Can be a faster turnaround (than a custom build) - 2 - 3 months
● If you are tech savvy you can even install and use it without a developer
Cons
● What you see is what you get and may look similar to other businesses online
● May not work properly on all browser or device combinations
● SEO optimization is not a part of a template with little to no scalability
● Not built for your target audience
● Branding customization is incremental work
6. Custom Website
A custom website is a recommended for any business that can afford it. When you build a
custom site, you will work with a team of experts that can help you with branding,
messaging, copywriting and user flow. The end result is a website that delivers a
customized user experience for your clients that also aligns with your business goals.
Pros
● Fully customizable and unique - branding, tone, design, content, and development
all come together to create a custom experience for your customers
● Scalable and compatible - it can be built with future needs in mind (i.e. e-commerce)
● SEO optimized - best solution as SEO can be fully integrated into the build
Cons
● More expensive than DIY or theme
● Generally takes longer than theme to implement - 3-5 months on average
“A good rule of thumb is to set aside 5-7% of your gross annual revenues on your website build
(this is part of the recommended 10-12% of your gross revenues that should be set aside for marketing and advertising).”
8. Variables that can impact cost
● Animation of any imagery within your website
● Extensive browser / device customization
● Mobile specific user designs
● Calendar functionality / Event management
● Infographics
● Branded email templates
● Reporting
● User log in / back end admin
● SEO Analysis & Strategy
● E-Commerce
● Automated forms
● Incremental Content or pages
● Social Sharing functionality
● Custom search
● Custom imagery
● Homepage slider or video background

best option
