3. What is Suggestopedia?
Suggestopedia is a language learning
method which concerns more about the
physical environment in which learners
take place.
The more comfortable and relax student
is the more effective language learning is.
( Introduced by Georgi Lozanov )
5. Typical Techniques ( Larsen-
Freeman.1986.”Techniques and Principles in
Language Teaching”. p84-86.)
a. Classroom set-up
The classroom has to be designed not like a
‘normal’ classroom, rather it should be as
comfort as possible for the students.
b. Peripheral learning
Ss can absorb the information ‘effortlessly’ as
it is received as a part of the environment
rather than as a material ‘to be attended to’.
6. c. Positive Suggestion
Teacher appeal to students’ consciousness and
subconscious to orchestrate the ‘suggestive’
factors involved in learning.
d. Visualization
Ss are asked to close their eyes and visualize
scenes and events to help them relax and
encourage their creativity.
e. Choose a new identity
Ss select a target language name and/or
occupation that places them inside the
language they are learning.
7. f. Role-play
Ss pretend temporarily that they are someone
else and perform their role using target
language.
g. First concert
T does a slow, dramatic reading of the dialog
synchronized in intonation with classical
music.
h. Second concert
Ss put aside their scripts and T reads at normal
speed according to the content with no
accompanying of Baroque music.
8. i. Primary activation
Ss ‘playfully’ reread the target language
out loud.
j. Secondary activation
Ss engage in various activities designed to
help Ss learn the material and use it more
spontaneously. The activities include
singing, dramatizations, and games.
9. Suggestopedia is a language learning method which
focuses on emotional factor of students. It believes that
the students will success on learning if they feel
encouraged and relaxed in learning process. However,
the effectiveness of this method is still questionable.
But there are still some basic principles that can be
applied such as the use of music , visualization, etc.
