3. WHAT IS BLUETOOTH?
The development of the “short-link” radio technology, later named Bluetooth, was
initiated in 1989 by Dr. Nils Rydbeck, CTO at Ericsson Mobile and Dr. Johan Ullman
A wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and
mobile devices, and building personal area networks
Invented by telecom vendor Ericsson in 1994
Maintained by Bluetooth Special Interest Group
( Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, Toshiba ,IBM )
Compatible hardware Mobile phones, personal
computers, gaming consoles
Physical range Typically less than 10 m, up to 100 m
6. SCOPE
Provide communication between peripheral devices
Used by modern healthcare devices to send signals to monitors
Rapid Data Transfer
Used for Dial-Up networking
Hands free voice communication
Enables mobile computers to connect to fixed LAN
8. Piconet can have upto eight active nodes (1 master and 7 slaves) or stations
within the distance of 10 meters.
Only one primary or master station in each piconet.
Communication between the primary and the secondary can be one-to-one or
one-to-many
All communication is between master and a slave. Salve-slave communication
is not possible
Can have upto 255 parked nodes
9. Formed by combining various piconets
Slave in one piconet can act as a master or primary in other
piconet (Bridge Slave)
A station cannot be a master in two piconets
Scatternet
11. Radio Frequency : Defines Air Interface,Frequency Bands,Frequency
Hopping,Modulation Technique and transmit Power Classes
Baseband : Addressing Scheme,Packet Frame Format,Timing and
Power Control Algorithms for establishing connection between bluetooth
devices
Link Manager Protocol : Establish link and maintain it.Also responsible
for authentication and Encryption and packet size negotiation
L2CAP ( Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol) : Adapts
upper layer frame to Base band layer frame format and vice versa
Service Discovery Protocol : Service related queries including device
information

13. ADVANTAGES
Makes Connectivity Convenient
Wireless
Free to Use
DISADVANTAGES
Can be Hacked
Short Range Communication
Low File Sharing Speed
Can only connect two devices at once
