2. GENDER GAP
The difference between women and men, especially
as reflected in social, political, intellectual, cultural,
or economic attainments or attitudes
3. GLOBAL GENDER GAP INDEX
• The Global Gender Gap Index was introduced
by the World Economic Forum to examine four
critical areas of inequality between men and
women:
• 1. Economic participation and opportunity
• 2. Educational attainment
• 3. Political empowerment
• 4. Health and survival

5. • India was ranked 108th on the annual
GGPI compiled by World Economic
Forum(Geneva).
• India has closed its gender gap by 2
percent in a year and its gap now stands
at 68 per cent across the four pillars that
WEF measures – economy, education,
health and political representation.
India’s Current GGPI
6. • The major improvement has been in
education where “ India has managed to
close its gap entirely in primary and
secondary education.
• WEF said, “In the economic sphere,
much work remains to be done.” India
ranks 136 in this pillar out of 144
countries.
7. • On educational attainment, India was
ranked at 113th place: in terms of health
and survival, it was placed at a lowly 142.
• While on political empowerment it was
among the top 10 countries.
8. • Pakistan scores on the four pillars have not
improved much from past years. Its ranking in
the economic participation and opportunity and
education attainment indexes have not changed
since 2015.
• But on the health and survival pillar, Pakistan
has moved one rank from 125 last year to 124
this year.
• On political empowerment, Pakistan has been
ranked 90th as compared to 87th the previous
year.
9. In South Asia - India the top ranker
• In South Asia, Bangladesh and India are the
top ranked countries having closed 70
performing countries and 68 performing
countries of their overall gender gap
respectively.
• While the lowest ranked are Bhutan and
Pakistan, having closed 64pc and 56pc of their
overall gender gap, respectively
10. • No country in the region has fully closed its
Educational Attainment gender gap, but over
the past decade on the overall index and on
educational attainment, Nepal is one of the
top five climbers.
11. Top and Least Nations at GGPI
• Globally the leading four nations continue to
be Scandinavian:
1. Iceland, 2. Finland, 3. Norway, and
4. Sweden
Yemen was followed by Pakistan and Syria as
the least equal nations; incredibly Saudi
Arabia, the only country in the world that
prohibits women from driving.
