Internship In Review
May 2014 – August 2014
Derek Hilleren, Engineering Design Intern
Benson, MN
FooterAugust, 13 2014 2
 Take part in each step of the design process and learn from a talented team of
engineers. Work with the team to solve problems and be a part of the solution
with opportunities to implement my ideas.
 Apply my engineering “book knowledge” to real world problems to help find
solutions. An opportunity to see how and where my knowledge can be applied
in the real world.
 Design a part/ system/ assembly with energy conservation being a high priority.
Energy conservation can be achieved by looking at:
 Reducing
 Reusing
 Recycling
Internship Goals
FooterAugust, 13 2014 3
 Summary:
• Resolve the battery box mounting issue observed on the 3340 while keeping
mounting hardware to a minimum and keeping a commonized battery box among
all models of sprayers.
Projects
Battery Box Mounting
FooterAugust, 13 2014 4
 Solution:
• Adding mounting tabs to the rear axle gussets of the 3340 and 4440 eliminates the
need for the long bolts that cross the frame.
Projects
Battery Box Mounting
FooterAugust, 13 2014 5
 Challenges
• Keeping a communized battery box among all sprayers
• Sizing the tabs correctly via hand calculations in order to withstand the specified
stresses
 Learning Outcomes
• Experience the design process and how such a small change can drastically
improve the product and manufacturing efficiency
• Opportunity to work with manufacturing and implement this change on the assembly
line
• Applied my engineering knowledge with static and dynamic stress calculations and
compared my results to FEA results
Projects

 Summary:
• Alternate supplier part validation
 Validate weather or not the jounce and extruded bumpers from an alternate supplier meet
or exceed the performance of our current production bumpers
o Conducted extensive research on rubber properties in order to devise a procedure with testing
parameters that would give us definitive results
o Work with a testing facility to conduct testing based on my testing procedure
o Participated in design review meetings in regards to testing fixtures designed for this project
Projects
Bumper Testing
FooterAugust, 13 2014 7
 Challenges
• Devising a testing procedure that will produce definitive results
• Keeping the project
 Learning Outcomes
• Opportunity to work along side test engineers and get valued feedback on
conducting quality testing procedures
• Clear communication, organization, and persistency are important in
order to keep projects on a scheduled timeline.

 Summary:
• Shorten the right side boom cradle support tube by 3 in. This change will narrow
the frame, allowing manufacturing to paint the frame with a more efficient process.

 2250 Belly Pan Drawings
• Created production drawings for parts of the 2250 belly pan kit
 4440 ROW Fuel Line Package
• Communized 4440 fuel line with ROW unit and located correct fitting for connecting
to the ECU
 2250 Decals
• Located all decals on the 2250 and documented location
 Hydraulic tube drawings
• Create drawings for hydraulic jumper tubes
 2250/3240 Battery Box Spacer Brackets
• Looked at possible solutions for communizing the battery box spacer brackets
between the 2250 and 3240.
 Product maintenance work in Engineering Central
• Updated EBOMs on various assemblies

 Opportunity to improve professional skills:
• Time Management
 Presented with many projects and deadlines
• Project Management
 Responsible for making sure others are getting work done on time in order to keep my
projects on track
• Communication
 Communicating with coworkers on a day to day basis to find answers to my questions
 Organizing meetings and presenting ideas to engineers from multiple departments
• Organization
 Keeping track of multiple projects at the same time
• Problem Solving
 Presented with problems and expected to find solutions
 Valuable insight on what a design engineer does
 Opportunities to observe and learn from professional engineers
