India is threatened by climate change, which may lead to large variations in how frequently the country suffers from a lack of rain (drought) or heavy rainfall that leads to floods. This is a concern, as more than half of its population depends on rain-fed agriculture. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNGREGS) has huge potential to help if MGNREGS works are selected and undertaken in ways that allow both natural resources and the communities that depend on them to cope better with climate change and extreme weather events. Infrastructure for Climate Resilient Growth (ICRG) is a technical assistance programme, which is seeking to help fulfil MGNREGS potential in relation to climate change. ICRG is focused on 103 blocks in three states: Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. This slide pack presents a vulnerability assessment and prioritisation of MGNREGS works, which has been used as the basis of a simple toolkit for decision makers to select those MGNREGS works that may be of greatest help in coping with climate change. It addresses Chhattisgarh and was the focus of a workshop with state, district and block level officials.

Monitoring deforestation across the globe is important for understanding macro-scale impacts on carbon sequestration and climate change. We trained a land cover machine learning model to monitor forest changes anywhere in the world. Our effort combines Apache Spark’s distributed machine learning, raster operations from LocationTech GeoTrellis, and the newly open-sourced RasterFrames library. RasterFrames let us apply GeoTrellis raster operations within Spark SQL, thereby homogenizing imagery queries and streamlining feature engineering. Using approximately 2,000 hand-labelled sites scattered across every continent and coarse resolution (500-m) surface reflectance products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellites, our model achieves an estimated accuracy of 95%, a user’s accuracy (recall) of 79%, and a producer’s accuracy (precision) of 95%. We scored this model on the State of Mato Grosso in Brazil, which has seen intense deforestation over the past several decades. We mapped and visualized forest change in Mato Grosso over the past 17 years. By Jason Brown and Courtney Whalen

The aim of this study is to showcase and discuss these new technologies for hydrometeorological studies. Six of NASA’s web-repositories that can be used to freely download and visualise such spatial and/or time-series factors are listed and explained with examples for Ireland: ways to access hydrological, meteorological, soil, vegetation and socio-economic data are shown, and estimations of various precipitations statistics, anomalies, and water balance are presented for monthly and seasonal analyses. The advantages, disadvantages and limitations of the satellite datasets are discussed to provide useful recommendations about their proper use, based on purpose, scale, precision, time requirement, and modelling-expansion criteria.
