DRINKING WATER
GUARANTEE THE SANITARY QUALITY,

SANITATION, ECONOMIC
AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
The hygienic quality of drinking water remains a fundamental concern throughout the
world and is the subject of increasing media attention. Sanitary problems include
bacteria control, as well as the need to limit the byproducts of treatment and the use
of reactive agents.
Consumers are also becoming more vocal about the organoleptic quality of their
water (its taste and odor).
In addition to this, with the current economic circumstances, municipalities are now
closely examining each and every cost associated with the construction and operation
of treatment facilities.
Finally, with the rapid development of environmental issues, all of us are obligated to
preserve the quality and the quantity of our natural resources. In certain regions of
the world, the scarcity of water requires treatment solutions that demand a high level
of efficiency and conservation.
ADAPTED SOLUTION
Supported by a global reputation for excellence and with over 70 years of experience,
Degrémont is developing new solutions to these complex issues: from flotation to

DESALINATION
PROVIDING ACCESS TO WATER FOR ALL,
WHILE RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT.
THE CHALLENGES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
40% of the world’s population suffers from a lack of fresh water, and this percentage will increase rapidly in the coming
years. In large measure, the deficiency affects populations living in coastal areas. This is why desalination is proving to be
an important solution. Desalination takes advantage of local resources rather than transporting water over longs distances.
However, traditional desalination technologies can have some disadvantages. The development of this market is established,
but the market is hindered by environmental and economic issues.
To reduce the cost of desalination, we must lower the energy consumption as well as the operating expense of the reverse
osmosis process. At the same time, to reduce the impact on the environment, we must develop solutions in renewable
energy, lower the use of reactive agents and neutralize the impact of concentrated salt discharge on marine flora and
fauna.
ADAPTED TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS
Degrémont is at the forefront of innovation providing clear solutions to solve the economic and environmental issues with
desalination. Utilizing wind energy, recuperating energy, offering pre-treatment systems to limit the frequency of
membrane washes, and improving processes for the disposal of concentrates are all ways Degrémont is innovating and
optimizing the desalination offer.

TECHNOLOGY READY TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGES OF TOMORROW
RECYCLING:
ONE FACET OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Today, preserving water resources is understood to be essential to solving human, environmental
and economical needs.
Water is vital to human life, yet close to two-thirds of the planet’s population lacks sufficient resources.
Water supplies are indispensable to preserving the planet’s natural balance, but in recent years the warning signs
have multiplied. Even in temperate climates, shortages are regularly observed.
By consequence, water has become an important economic issue. Still, water is a renewable resource. And in the
same way that we are searching for means to reuse raw materials, we should be recycling water for use in
agriculture (irrigation), industry and urban settings (supplying fountains, street cleaning, etc.).
Reuse can help to avoid waste while preserving available resources, all at a lower cost.
Progressively, numerous countries are putting regulations into place that offer a framework for developing reuse
projects.
RESPOND TO AND ANTICIPATE REAL NEEDS
Degrémont is already at work innovating in reuse. The immediate objective is to respond to the needs of
municipalities and industries in countries with water shortages while anticipating new expansion on regulations.
Degrémont’s innovative technological solutions are adapted to each situation, given that the required quality of
water differs according to the use.

CHALLENGES RELATED TO HUMANS AND EXPANSION
Changing demographics, economic development, urban growth and population density increases all have the same
consequence – a progressive increase in urban wastewater volume. The challenge is compounded by the need to
protect the environment and quality of life.
Regulations on water quality are being strengthened to protect the environment. Consequently, guidelines for the
treatment of urban wastewater have become much more stringent. This trend is further complicated by the difficult
economic climate, creating the need to balance performance with cost controls. Public acceptance of urban wastewater
treatment facilities is dependent on this equilibrium.
FULFILLING COMPLEX AND DEMANDING SPECIFICATIONS
Degrémont innovation in urban wastewater is seen in diversified solutions that can, for example, combine a biological
treatment with clarification using membrane filters. Degrémont solutions also innovate through efficient designs with
smaller footprints and lower consumption of energy and reactive agents. These innovations support preservation of the
natural environment (biodiversity), as well as protect water resources.

HARNESS THE POTENTIAL OF SLUDGE
GENERATED BY WATER TREATMENT.
ENERGY, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS
Sludge volume is growing exponentially: the more water we treat, the more we produce. It is a global phenomenon, linked to
demographic development, urbanism and economic activity.
To meet the challenge, it is necessary to seek multiple solutions: finding a way to treat sludge while reducing volume, but also to obtain
a safer, higher quality sludge. Evolving solutions in this field must integrate the economic reality that growing volumes raise treatment
costs.
However, the constraints represented by the increasing sludge volumes to be treated, can be offset by leveraging the enormous
potential of biosolids. For example, the potential savings of utilizing biogas production is an important element for consideration in a
treatment plants’ energy needs.
OFFERING SAFE AND USEFUL SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE
In the biosolids field, Degrémont has positioned itself as a multi-sector player with an objective for innovation in treatment quality
regardless of the final destination of the sludge. Degrémont’s goal is to develop biosolids for agricultural or energy use as an added-
value for water treatment facilities.

reduces the energy consumption by nearly one third, by
coupling two dryers - an indirect dryer and a direct dryer - the
second to be directly powered by the free energy generated by
the steam from sludge generated by the first dryer. Through its
inherent design advantages (no dust, no pelletization stage,
integrated granules cooling), Evaporis™ LE also demonstrates
the highest operational safety level there is.

Drying is a fundamental step in wastewater sludge
treatment. With the Evaporis™ LT integrated
process, Degrémont offers a revolutionary solution
to this step by harnessing free energy generated
by the plant. The solution is a low-temperature
belt-dryer supplied by on-site low-calorie
processes. While requiring less primary energy,
offering extremely safe operation, and with a
modular design; Evaporis™ LT is tomorrows’

BIOSOLIDS
An environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional incineration, the Thermylis™ process is the most
successful for the ultimate reduction of sludge volume.
Thermylis™ 2S and Thermylis™ 2R allow you to not only drastically streamline your operating costs due to near zero
energy consumption levels, but are also a leading choice for environmentally friendly sludge treatment equipment
processes due to the implementation of energy recovery designs.
Thermylis™ 2S is specifically designed to integrate into existing sludge treatment systems for optimizing WWTPs, and
combines an incineration furnace and a self-powered sludge dryer that uses energy recovery for a near-zero use of
fossil fuel energy.
Thermylis™ 2R consists of an incineration furnace coupled to a turbine; to not only to consume very little energy but
also and specifically designed to produce free energy – a major advantage whether for use in a new WWTP or a
refurbishment.

AIR
STRENGTHEN PUBLIC CONFIDENCE IN
URBAN WASTEWATER AND SLUDGE TREATMENT.
SOLUTIONS FOR SANITARY AND INDUSTRIAL
SECURITY, AS WELL AS QUALITY OF LIFE
Sludge and urban wastewater treatment facilities can emit, in more- or less-significant
proportions, undesirable airborne emissions. Concentrations of H2S are a source of
olfactory pollution that can diminish the quality of life for populations neighboring
treatment facilities. For the municipality, quality of life concerns constitute an important
political issue.
Add to this the dangers caused by heavily concentrated emissions, whether it be for the
health and safety of factory personnel, or the state of the installations themselves.
Degrémont innovation improves the efficient treatment of concentrates, aiding public
confidence of the installations.
