Air Vice-Marshal G J Bagwell CBE MSc RAF
AIR OFFICER COMMANDING NUMBER 1 GROUP HEADQUARTERS AIR COMMAND
Greg Bagwell joined the RAF as a direct entrant in 1981 as a combat pilot and has flown
the Tornado GR1/4 and Canadian F18 Hornet operationally and as a qualified weapons
instructor in the strike, ground-attack, air-defence and reconnaissance roles.
Posted initially to Germany, where he served the majority of his flying tours, he flew 5
operational tours over Iraq between 1990-2001 in both Tornado and Hornet aircraft.
He commanded Number IX(B) Tornado Sqn during his final 2 operational tours over
Iraq and also during the Kosovo campaign of 1999. He subsequently completed an
operational tour as the Coalition Air Operations Chief in the Al Udeid CAOC in 2004.
He commanded RAF Marham from 2004 to 2006, where he was also the first Tornado
Force Commander, responsible for the delivery of the entire Tornado GR4 Force
capability based at Marham and Lossiemouth.
A graduate of the Indian Staff College and UK HCSC, he has completed staff tours at
MoD, JSCSC, HQ No 1 Group and PJHQ; the latter being his most recent tour as ACOS
J5. Promoted to Air Vice-Marshal in 2009, he currently holds the post of Air Officer
Commanding No 1 Group at Air Command where he is responsible to CINCAIR as the UK
Air Defence Commander for the generation and development of the RAF’s Combat Air
Power and with full command responsibilities of the RAF Support Helicopter Force.
