PR22: Sourcing Images
Within this particular word document, I am going to be talking about the different images which I have sourced as well as you they
are copyrighted by. In addition,I am also going to talk about the organisation or person which could grant me with the permission
to use the image. Finally, I am also going to cover what copyright is and what it protects, also how I can use ‘copyright hub ’ to get
permission to use the images and what organisationsI can contact to gain access to particular images legally. In contrast, as I am
also producing a photography magazine I have therefore, sourced images from a photographer which I managed to ‘interview’ for
the double page spread within my photography magazine which will hopefully give upcoming photographer’s the ingenuity to keep
going with their aspiration to become a photographer as they will see how people just like them have made it to the top with a lot
of hard, technical work. In addition, as I have soured one of my own images I will therefore, not have to get permission to use my
image as it is copyrighted by me therefore, I have all of the rights in the world to use this particular image within the photography
magazine which I am producing for Unit 51: Page Layout & Design. Therefore, this image is copyright by Declan Tyldesley 2016. For
example, please view my sourced images below taken from the website conducted by the wildlife photographer named David
Lloyd, in order to view much more of his professional wildlife photography please visit his website; http://davidlloyd.net/. Please
view my two sourced images below;
Furthermore, within this next paragraph I am going to answer the three questions stated within the first paragraph of this PR22:
Sourcing Images document. Additionally, copyright is a form of intellectual property, which is applicable to particular or certain
forms of creative work. For example, within the US copyright law, legal protection only attaches to particular forms of media work
whereas; the United Kingdom copyright law applies to near enough all media products which are distributed into the industry as
they want every single aspect to be protected, predominantly so it cannot be stolen by anyone within or outside of the industry. In
addition, due to these facts the UK copyright law on the other hand will protect any form of media products if it is evidenced by
the creator that, that particular media product is theirs and theirs only. For example, the copyright law is able to protect media
products ranging from film products, television or even radio products. The copyright law was released in 1988 to protect
musician’s music/content to stop other people from using it and making money off of their song. Music copyright is the legal
protection given to the creators of music. Copyright is probably one of the biggest main factors in the Media industry that
producers need to apply or have data of to protect their film, song etc. They can protect their content by putting the copy right
symbol somewhere in their content by showing this the majority of people wouldn’t dare to use your content or else you could get
given prison time or fined a high amount of money. Copyrightalso allows musicians to get paid for their work. Musicians are paid
with something that is referred to as royalties. To conclude, due to all of these different contributing factors copyri ght on the other
hand therefore, protects every freelancer and production company from people who want to steal their information, photographs
or media products.
In contrast, a source which I could use in order to obtain permission to use my images, is a website named ‘copyright hub’. From
this particular website I will be able to upload my image to a specific page and once I have done this the website will then tell me
who it is licensed by and which photographer took the photograph therefore, once I have obtained this relevant information I will
then be able to contact the production company or person who owns the image I want to source, to find out whether or not I can
DeclanTyldesley
use these images within my photography magazine. Additionally, in order to move that step closer to getting permission for the
images you will need to go onto the copyrightwebsite and select ‘permissions’which is displayed in the top column of the website.
Within this webpage the ‘copyright hub’ actually offer suggestions on where to find images which you can use legally within the
creative media industries. They suggested visitingtheBAPLA which is The British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies, this
website offers a wide range of image suppliers in theUnited Kingdom where you can search for images using particular key wor ds.
Then once you have found an image you like it will then be tailored towards your particular needs. In addition, within this aspect of
the website they also suggest websites such as Getty Images, The British Broadcasting Corporation and a website which
reproduces the work of an artist so you can contact multiple rights holder organisations and this website is named Design and
Artists Copyright Society (DACS). In contrast, when you want to find out who your image is licenced by you will then select ‘search
by image’ within the second drop down box however, if you are unable to find the copyright holder for a particular image do not
use it because you could face a major penalty fine. On the other hand, if this un-likely event takes place you should continuing
looking for another image to source which is licenced by a company because if you do this you will not face any legal penalty or
action, and after this the only thing which you will have to do is contact the licence holder so you can use it within a particular
source of media product and if it was me I would use the images for a photography magazine which I am creating for one of my
educational units. Furthermore, as opposed the copyright hub website also have tools and directories which are available to
anyone visiting the webpage also these tools will help you get the licenses for the material you acquire for your media product. In
addition,if you found an in a specific printed publication or online, you should try asking the publisher or website owner about the
source of a particular image. For example, the first image on the page before which is titled, ‘Bond of Brothers’ is copyrighted by
the photographer David Lloyd (©DAVIDLLOYD.NET), this particularphotograph was photographed in Serengeti, Tanzania (Africa) i n
March 2015. In addition, the second photograph you saw on the first page titled, ‘Lioness Eye’ is once again copyrighted by David
Lloyd (©DAVIDLLOYD.NET) and it was also photographed in Maasia Mara,Kenya,in February 2015. Additionally, I also managed to
find all of this information by visiting the ‘copyright hub’ website and searching my two sourced images so I could find out who
owned the rights to the image, I also used David Lloyd’s website as a sourceof information because from this website I would have
been able to obtain a more thorough knowledge upon my chosen images. In contrast, due to the benefits of these particular two
websites I will now be able to contact the photographer David Lloyd to see if I can use these specific two images of his to p lace in
my Unit 51, magazinedouble page spread. In my opinion,as I only have to contact a photographer I think this is a major advantage
because if it was a major, popular and precise photographing company I will have to use a substantial amount of time
communicating with them as I suppose they will be a lot harder to break down whereas a photographer (freelancer) on his own is
not although he holds largeamounts of skill within this particular industry. In addition, as I am also using one of my own images I
will therefore not have to obtain rights to my particular image as I already hold all of these rights therefore, due to this fact, I will
be able to use my image with no problems at all. Due to these facts, I will therefore also not have to communicate anyone at all to
try and gain rights to the image which I am going to use on the front cover of my magazine. In conclusion, I thoroughly believe that
I have selected three effective images which I managed to successfully source to use within my photography magazine, I believe
this becausemy images focus on two different aspects of photography which are; wildlifeand public therefore, with these images I
will be able to effectively and substantially appeal to my demographic target audience as well as adhere to the photography
magazine codes and conventions.
