How Do We
Love Westlake
Academy?
Let us count
the ways…
Dear
Friends
of the
Foundation:
“Learning new things I never thought possible” is just one of the reasons why
Khloe Smith loves Westlake Academy. This ever-smiling six year old, pictured on
the cover, entered WA last year as a kindergartener. She quickly became a fan
of the teachers, staff, and the school, as did the rest of her family, which includes
dad Eric, mom Jackie, and big brother Jay, an Academy 8th grader.
Jackie loves Westlake Academy’s International Baccalaureate curriculum: “The
teachers use every moment as an opportunity to teach and for the students to
learn. Even outside of teaching -- it’s great to see the IB principles in action as
these are things that the students can carry with them and use all their lives.”
This year, Khloe looks most forward to learning how to read chapter books
and to watching “science experiments with explosions.” Your contributions to
the Blacksmith Annual Fund and your participation in events such as Gallery
Night provide the financial backing for Westlake Academy Foundation grants
that directly support Khloe’s interests, as well as those of her classmates.
Additionally, these funds cover school operating expenses because, as a charter
school, Westlake Academy only receives 70% of the state’s educational dollars
per student.
Thanks to your support of the Westlake Academy Foundation, we can continue
to provide the resources necessary to develop life-long, internationally minded
learners. That’s a great way to show your love for Westlake Academy!
As the Foundation celebrates another
successful year, we remain ever grateful
to you: our donors, our volunteers, our
friends. We appreciate your continued
confidence and trust as we work
together to support the wonderful IB
learning, thinking and creating that
defines Westlake Academy. Your gifts
ensure that our students and teachers
can continue their journeys of discovery.
Thank you for believing in the Academy
with all your heart!
“A thankful heart is not only
the greatest virtue, but the
parent of all other virtues.”
~ Cicero

This Year-in-Review reflects contributions made
Sept. 1, 2014 – August 31, 2015. Much care
and attention have been given to this report’s
preparation; however, should you note an error,
please accept our sincere apology and advise the
Foundation office (817-490-5722). We appreciate
the opportunity to make any corrections.

an opportunity to teach and for the
students to learn.”
Financial Statement 2014-15
Where Do Your Contributions Go?
$1,045,072
$71,000
$1,200
Operations Funding: Seventeen percent of the school’s
operations budget is financed by your donations to the
Blacksmith Annual Fund. This funding covers supplies,
utilities, facility upgrades, teacher salaries, and everything
else required for day-to-day operations.
Smart Boards: Ten Smart Boards were purchased and
installed in classrooms using North Texas Giving Day and
Gallery Night Fund-An-Item auction donations.
Travel Scholarships: Two Bradley Endowment Travel
Awards were provided to Westlake Academy students.
$86,960
$27,850
$24,000
$20,000
$7,650
$6,720
$740
School and Teacher Initiatives: Grants are awarded
to teachers who identify specific needs in line with the
Academy’s mission and vision. These monies came from the
proceeds from Westlake Baja, Gallery Night, and the new Run
the Ranch Fun Run. Funded grants for 2014-15 included:
• Science Department Equipment, Resources & Software:
Funded new science instruments, reagents, consumables,
and software to maintain laboratory standards in support of
STEM-based curriculums for all grade levels.
• Legacy Teacher Initiative: Provided funds to attract,
retain, and develop outstanding teachers.
• Math Enrichment/Remediation Teacher: Supplied salary
support for a math teacher to work with individual students
and small groups needing accelerated work or remediation.
• “Shark Tank” 3-day Start-up: Supported an
entrepreneurial program for Diploma Programme
economics students in which they will develop hands-on,
practical business skills and leadership.
• 1:1 iPad Initiative Support: Subsidized cases, chargers,
and additional accessories as needed.
• Culture of Creativity: Funded musical instruments and art
supplies to provide students with creative opportunities for
exploring, expressing, and interpreting literary works.
As a charter school, WestlakeAcademy
receives only 70% of state dollars per
student compared to the average
public school. The Blacksmith Annual
Fund provides important dollars to fill
in the financial gap for the ongoing
operations of the school.
Charitable contributions and fund
growth, which includes 10% gross
event proceeds, help move us toward
our $5 million goal.
Proceeds from this event fund grants to
recruit, retain and develop high-quality
teachers and to provide classroom and
technology resources.
Held each spring, Gallery Night is an
art-themed evening of fun with a spec-
tacular live and silent auction. Event
proceeds enable the Foundation to
fund grant requests for classroom
equipment, campus and gym needs,
specialized curriculum, staff develop-
ment, technology upgrades, and more!
Taking place on the Circle T Ranch,
this new fundraiser and community-
wide event provides additional funds
to be used for grants in support of our
students and teachers.

  • 2. How Do We Love Westlake Academy? Let us count the ways… Dear Friends of the Foundation: “Learning new things I never thought possible” is just one of the reasons why Khloe Smith loves Westlake Academy. This ever-smiling six year old, pictured on the cover, entered WA last year as a kindergartener. She quickly became a fan of the teachers, staff, and the school, as did the rest of her family, which includes dad Eric, mom Jackie, and big brother Jay, an Academy 8th grader. Jackie loves Westlake Academy’s International Baccalaureate curriculum: “The teachers use every moment as an opportunity to teach and for the students to learn. Even outside of teaching -- it’s great to see the IB principles in action as these are things that the students can carry with them and use all their lives.” This year, Khloe looks most forward to learning how to read chapter books and to watching “science experiments with explosions.” Your contributions to the Blacksmith Annual Fund and your participation in events such as Gallery Night provide the financial backing for Westlake Academy Foundation grants that directly support Khloe’s interests, as well as those of her classmates. Additionally, these funds cover school operating expenses because, as a charter school, Westlake Academy only receives 70% of the state’s educational dollars per student. Thanks to your support of the Westlake Academy Foundation, we can continue to provide the resources necessary to develop life-long, internationally minded learners. That’s a great way to show your love for Westlake Academy! As the Foundation celebrates another successful year, we remain ever grateful to you: our donors, our volunteers, our friends. We appreciate your continued confidence and trust as we work together to support the wonderful IB learning, thinking and creating that defines Westlake Academy. Your gifts ensure that our students and teachers can continue their journeys of discovery. Thank you for believing in the Academy with all your heart! “A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all other virtues.” ~ Cicero Westlake Academy Foundation Board of Directors Top (left to right): Ken Gordon, Leah Rennhack, Andy Sedino, Kevin Hansen, Jeff Watson, Shelly Myers (Executive Director), Sean Shope Bottom (left to right): Julie Kelly (Administrative Assistant), Zan Jones, Karen Stoltenberg, Debbie Kraska Not pictured: Bill Greenwood, Andy Grieser, and Chris Jeppesen This Year-in-Review reflects contributions made Sept. 1, 2014 – August 31, 2015. Much care and attention have been given to this report’s preparation; however, should you note an error, please accept our sincere apology and advise the Foundation office (817-490-5722). • 3. Financial Statement 2014-15 Where Do Your Contributions Go? $1,045,072 $71,000 $1,200 Operations Funding: Seventeen percent of the school’s operations budget is financed by your donations to the Blacksmith Annual Fund. This funding covers supplies, utilities, facility upgrades, teacher salaries, and everything else required for day-to-day operations. Smart Boards: Ten Smart Boards were purchased and installed in classrooms using North Texas Giving Day and Gallery Night Fund-An-Item auction donations. Travel Scholarships: Two Bradley Endowment Travel Awards were provided to Westlake Academy students. $86,960 $27,850 $24,000 $20,000 $7,650 $6,720 $740 School and Teacher Initiatives: Grants are awarded to teachers who identify specific needs in line with the Academy’s mission and vision. These monies came from the proceeds from Westlake Baja, Gallery Night, and the new Run the Ranch Fun Run. Funded grants for 2014-15 included: • Science Department Equipment, Resources & Software: Funded new science instruments, reagents, consumables, and software to maintain laboratory standards in support of STEM-based curriculums for all grade levels. • Legacy Teacher Initiative: Provided funds to attract, retain, and develop outstanding teachers. • Math Enrichment/Remediation Teacher: Supplied salary support for a math teacher to work with individual students and small groups needing accelerated work or remediation. • “Shark Tank” 3-day Start-up: Supported an entrepreneurial program for Diploma Programme economics students in which they will develop hands-on, practical business skills and leadership. • 1:1 iPad Initiative Support: Subsidized cases, chargers, and additional accessories as needed. • Culture of Creativity: Funded musical instruments and art supplies to provide students with creative opportunities for exploring, expressing, and interpreting literary works. As a charter school, WestlakeAcademy receives only 70% of state dollars per student compared to the average public school. The Blacksmith Annual Fund provides important dollars to fill in the financial gap for the ongoing operations of the school. Charitable contributions and fund growth, which includes 10% gross event proceeds, help move us toward our $5 million goal. Proceeds from this event fund grants to recruit, retain and develop high-quality teachers and to provide classroom and technology resources. Held each spring, Gallery Night is an art-themed evening of fun with a spec- tacular live and silent auction. Event proceeds enable the Foundation to fund grant requests for classroom equipment, campus and gym needs, specialized curriculum, staff develop- ment, technology upgrades, and more! Taking place on the Circle T Ranch, this new fundraiser and community- wide event provides additional funds to be used for grants in support of our students and teachers. Blacksmith Annual Fund Endowment Fund (Principal & Growth) $231,597 $1,045,072 $154,845 $8,130 $1,352,623
