This document discusses the process of developing user interfaces and interactions for a system. It describes how originally the design and development teams worked separately without collaboration, leading to issues. It then goes through examples of refining text for the system based on user testing and feedback. It emphasizes lessons around understanding requirements, using style guides, and maximizing that "just enough is more."

10. Verify Your Country and Date of Birth
According to an initial requirements document,
delivered to the design firm, no verification of the
user-entered information is possible.
How exactly is this
information âverifiedâ?
11. Enter Your Country and Date of Birth
[System] ([acronym]) requires all of its
members to provide their actual date of
birth, so that account access levels can be
applied correctly and to help ensure that
only age-appropriate content is viewed
when Parental Controls are set. âAge
appropriate contentâ is determined based on

date of birth?

Technically complex system ever worked on.
Handed off to graphic design team without the participation and leadership of the development team.
Collaboration is required
UX is technical, graphics, English
Stunned and amazed.
Grammar, technical, spelling, punctuation, consistency
I produced this
Almost 500 errors.
More than one error in each line
Mostly technical inaccuracies, English language usage, ambiguity.
One example: intro to Users experience
Thee words above (and the following instructions) are first encountered by someone creating an account.
This is the beginning of the account creation workflow. It starts with the account-creating userâs country and date of birth.
It proceeds with the creation of other users in the account.
NO Geolocation by IP address or any other means
And then we have this.
Over 300 characters. Over 50 words.
Deep breath
This is a barrier
Technical errors, English language usage errors, incorrect and faulty explanations. Should be cut entirely.
This is all a discussion of WHY
All unnecessary
This acronym is incorrect. See Brand Identity Guidelines, p 32.
Â
âActualâ seems closer to the intended meaning: ânot false.â
This clause is constructed with a (split) infinitive verb (âto help ensureâ), so that it appears to be parallel with an earlier clause (beginning with the compound verb âto provideâ), when in fact it is parallel with the clause beginning âso thatâŠâ It should read, âand so that only age-appropriate content, etc.â In other words, this sentence lacks the parallelism necessary to support its length.
First user is always a âfull-accessâ user. Can view all content.
Technically incorrect.
This statement is technically correct only within the United States. Yes, country has already been collected, but there is no indication that this text is conditional, and no other text for other countries.
After cutting all of the technical inaccuracies, a-grammatical English usage, and other mistakes, we are left with this simple declarative sentence.
Clever, but really says A equals not A. Non-Aristotelian logic that is impossible to reason about or with.
Talking about airplane design also applies to industrial design, human-computer interaction, everything really.
