For companies, data is only worthwhile if it can be processed. At the same time, a new, comprehensive and generally accepted handling practice has to be anchored in the way data is utilized. Industrial Data Space is a virtual data space which supports the secure exchange and simple linking of data in business ecosystems on the basis of standards and by using collaborative governance models. Data is only exchanged if it is requested from trustworthy certified partners. The data owner – i.e. the company – determines who is allowed to use the data in what way. As a result, the partners of one supply chain have joint access to certain data by mutual consent so that they can start something new, develop new business models, design their own processes more efficiently or initiate additional added value processes elsewhere, either alone or together. This presentation was shown at Digital Transport Days, November 9, 2017.

Many of these organizations have turned to AI to solve all their problems. Surprisingly (/sarcasm), many of these same organizations have failed to realize and sustain ROI from their investments in AI. In this discussion, we will review a few solutions to supply chain initiatives we've rolled out and highlight the keys to success that we've identified to help organizations sustain value from applications in AI. In particular, we will discuss end-to-end technical solutions in demand forecasting, machine learning for lead-time optimization, and full network optimization, as well as the governance and organizational structures we have to consider to make sure the value from these solutions scales throughout the organization.

"Machine learning algorithms require significant amounts of training data which has been centralized on one machine or in a datacenter so far. For numerous applications, such need of collecting data can be extremely privacy-invasive. Recent advancements in AI research approach this issue by a new paradigm of training AI models, i.e., Federated Learning. In federated learning, edge devices (phones, computers, cars etc.) collaboratively learn a shared AI model while keeping all the training data on device, decoupling the ability to do machine learning from the need to store the data in the cloud. From personal data perspective, this paradigm enables a way of training a model on the device without directly inspecting users’ data on a server. This talk will pinpoint several examples of AI applications benefiting from federated learning and the likely future of privacy-aware systems."
