Consumers have expectations and when those expectations are not met, the consumers
move on to systems that meet their needs. As such, when the back-end breaks down so does
the customer experience.
Vendors need the assurance that their back-end database systems will be able to handle not only
consistent variables but also inconsistent ones. Key characteristics such as availability, scalability,
manageability, performance, and security are required.
But when the database goes down, it can have a rippling effect on the entire business. Margins built
into products may erode because fewer products can be sold. Inventory levels can be disrupted
resulting in either too much or too little product because of an inability to manage logistics and
supply chain processes.
