10. Important Considerations for Mobile BI
Ubiquitous Dashboard - Look for a mobile BI solution that has a
dashboard that performs the same way on tablets as it does on
PCs.
Flexible reporting: Look for a mobile BI solution that lets your
tablet users modify and save their own reports or dashboards to
meet spontaneous requirements.
Adaptability to a range of devices: If your company is going Bring
Your Own Device (BYOD), make it a requirement that the BI data
can render on multiple device types. Look for a solution with iOS
and Android clients or that uses HTML 5 for its web interface.
11. Important Considerations for Mobile BI
Tablet-level security: Consider a mobile BI solution that doesn’t
store corporate data on the device. Back that up with a mobile
device management (MDM) tool that lets your IT staff wipe any
corporate tablets.
Secure communications: The transmission of corporate BI data
requires data transmission security like a VPN connection or
Secure Socket Layers (SSL) security.
Network security: Extending an enterprise BI platform to tablets
requires security like LDAP or Active Directory to ensure the
proper authentication of tablet users seeking to access the
enterprise BI platform.

Carol will welcome everyone and thank them in participating in today’s web seminar, Understanding the Tremendous Value of Mobile Analytics. She will then introduce Terry and Dragos including brief bio highlights.
Thank you Carol. So Why is Mobile Analytics Valuable? First, we need to understand where users consume data. Over the past few years there has been a Tidal Wave of mobile devices that is growing exponentially. According to a Morgan Stanley Research report, mobile internet usage is now projected to exceed desktop internet usage by 2014. Further, by 2016; smart phones, laptops and other portable devices will drive approximately 90% of all mobile data traffic globally. In addition, Gartner Research states that “smartphones and tablets will represent more than 90 percent of the new net growth in device adoption for the coming four years.” Gartner also believes that “more mobile application development projects will be commissioned in 2012 than PC-related projects for the first time ever.” Therefore, consumers of data are increasingly using mobile devices as their primary source of information on a daily basis.
What is driving this change to mobile devices? Over the past five years, Apple has changed the face of the mobile market. With both a sleek design and user friendly functionality. The Apple product has gained wide consumer acceptance as a product used on a daily basis. There are currently 180M iPhones and 70M iPads in use today. However, these devices are no longer just for the individual consumer. Increasingly, more of these devices are now being bought by organizations for business applications. 92% of Fortune 500 companies are deploying and/or using the iPhone. 93% of Fortune 500 companies are deploying and/or testing the iPad.
Better devices and greater consumer acceptance is causing a shift in Organizational Acceptance As organizations continue to accept mobile devices as a way to connect and communicate with their increasingly mobile workforce, it is becoming more apparent that the large form factors of the tablet PC is gaining a foot hold. With the increasing success of Apple’s iPad within business environments as mentioned previously and the B-Y-O-D (or Bring Your Own Device) to work programs, there is an expectation that we will see a sharp increase in the number of iPad-oriented Mobile BI initiatives fulfilled throughout 2012. In order to take advantage of the mobile workforce’s acceptance of these ever improving devices, Gartner predicts that 33% of organizations plan to deploy a Mobile BI Solution in 2012. Further, due to this increasing deployment, Gartner expects by 2013 that 33% of all BI functionality will be consumed on a mobile or handheld device.
Further data substantiates that a shift in organizational acceptance for not only Mobile Devices, but also Mobile BI, is occurring. InformationWeek’s O utlook 2012 report found that 31 percent of contributors agreed that tablets would become the main computing device for “select” employees. This is a significant shift from same report 2 years earlier, in which 51 percent of respondents “strongly disagreed” that their organizations would issue tablet PCs to replace a desktop or laptop for even 10 percent of employees. As you can see, according to the 2011 Howard Dresner Mobile BI Market Study, 80% of organizations ranked Mobile BI as a top priority for their executives. So its no surprise that according to Tech Target, 50% of organizations plan to deploy a Mobile BI solution by 2013.
So what is the Tremendous Value of Mobile Analytics? Today, you’re employees are connected more than ever before. It used to be that the term “24/7” was used just in the convenience store business. And the term “tether” was usually followed by the word ball. Now these are both terms used to describe how your employees are connected using mobile devices. But being connected 24/7 or tethered to your mobile device is meaningless without receiving actionable data to improve the organization. According to the Aberdeen Group Report on Mobile BI, Organizations employing a Mobile BI solution can make Critical Business Decisions 6 times faster than those who do not employ a Mobile BI solution. Further, organizations employing Mobile Best Practices can make Critical Business Decisions 3 times faster than those who do not. Therefore, organizations implementing Mobile BI solutions using Best Practices are expected to make Critical Business Decisions 18 times faster than those organizations without a Mobile BI solution.
Besides making Business Critical Decisions faster than competitors, what other Benefits do your peers seek from a Mobile BI Solution? According to the Mobile Business Intelligence and analytics report, 65% of respondents stated that they seek to improve customer sales, service and support. 60% of respondents stated that they would like to use Mobile BI to improve efficiency and coordination in operations and business processes. 50% of respondents stated that they would like to achieve a faster deployment of BI and analytics applications. 45% of respondents stated they would like to provide customer self-service benefits. Stated another way, organizations are seeking a Mobile BI solution that will improve sales and service, while doing it more efficiently to reduce costs.
What information do your peers seek from a Mobile BI Solution? Overwhelming, 83% of respondents want to deliver information faster and easier to the Executive Level. 67% of respondents want users to have easier, self service access to the data sources. 54% of respondents agree that a Mobile BI solution should provide data at the right time to the right person. Finally, just over half of the respondents agreed that users should receive more frequently updated data. All of the benefits in this survey are important for you to consider when choosing a Mobile BI solution. I would also add the following considerations (next slide).
What are the most important considerations when evaluating a Mobile BI Solution? Ubiquitous Dashboard: you want your end users to have the same experience whether they access the BI solution from the Desktop, Laptop, iPhone, iPad, Android device, etc. Your Mobile BI solution should not require additional training when moving from the PC to the Mobile device, it should be with only one way to consume data. Flexible Reporting: Mobile Bi should not mean static reporting. Users need to have the ability to modify and save their own reports or dashboards to meet spontaneous requirements. Adaptability to a range of devices: many organizations are allowing employees to B-Y-O-D (Bring Your Own Device). This can be a tremendous cost savings and an employee morale booster. However, it should not become a nightmare to your Mobile BI Solution. You should make it a requirement that the BI Data can be rendered on multiple device types. This includes not only the more than 250M Apple products in use, but also the many various types of devices running the Android operating system as well. And again, your Mobile BI solution should be ubiquitous across all these devices.
Tablet-level security: When looking at Mobile BI Solutions, keep in mind Mobile can also mean easier to lose or steal. However, that should only be the device and not your organization’s data. Consider a Mobile BI solution that does not store corporate data on the Mobile Device or at a minimum, provides password protection on your mobile device. You should also use a Mobile Device Management tool that allows your IT staff to wipe any corporate tablets before re-issue. Secure Communications: Mobile BI could also mean transmission of data across public WIFI networks. Keeping organization’s data safe means your solution should require data transmission security like a VPN connection (Virtual Private Network) or SSL (Secure Socket Layers) security. Network Security: Finally, your Network Security should not end at the desktop. Extending an enterprise BI platform to tablets requires security like LDAP or Active Directory to ensure the proper authentication. The Mobile solution you choose should not require the maintenance of separate security.
When it comes to Mobile BI Solutions, what do Most Organizations and Users Really Need? What are the Key Drivers in the decision process? Faster Decision Making. Informed business critical decisions made possible sooner than competitors. Leverage any existing BI Investments. The Mobile Solution should not be a different solution. Secure access to information across all devices, both Mobile and Desktop. Fully interactive and personalized experience to match the role and responsibility of the user. Intuitive data exploration and visualization. Learning curve should be minimal. Collaborate and share results instantly. Business Critical Decisions are not made in a vacuum, ability to collaborate is important. High Performance and scalable. Should include all platforms.
These are a few examples of organizations that have successfully implemented IBM Mobile Analytics solutions. As you can see, each of these organizations shared challenges relating to information access, in real time. Through the implementation of IBM Mobile Analytics: Ogilvy & Mathers was able to provide data to business leaders more quickly, helping to control costs and manage margins. Leading to a 20% increase in projects implemented per year. Papa Gino’s Pizzeria was able to improve consumer buying data visibility, leading to a 50% increase in the total of an average order. Finally, the Cincinnati Zoo was able to improve business operations, which improved customer experience and loyalty leading to $500k in new revenue. These are just a few examples of how Mobile BI Solutions continues to help organizations increase customer experience and revenue, while improving operations and reducing costs. How will Mobile BI change the way your organization responds to Business Critical Decisions??
At this time, Dragos will present a Mobile Solution that meets all of the requirements of as discussed today.
