An intimate relationship is a particularly close interpersonal relationship. It can be defined by these characteristics: enduring behavioral interdependence, repeated interactions, emotional attachment, and need fulfillment.Intimate relationships play a central role in the overall human experience. Although the systematic study of intimate relationships is fairly recent, social thought and analysis of intimate relationships dates back to early Greek philosophers. Two women are murdered by their partner or ex-partner every week in England and Wales. Walby & Allen, (2004). Similar figures are reported internationally; the time of highest risk is at the point of or recently after, separation form the abuser. In the general population, the lifetime prevalelence of isolated domestic violence incidents is comparable for men and women, but women are at greater risk of repeated coercive, sexual or severe physical violence. ( Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000).
Women who experience domestic violence are at an increased risk of not receiving mental health care. (Lipsky & Caetano, 2007). Pre-existing mental health problems influence the likelihood of being in unsafe environments and relationships. (McHugo et al. 2005). There is evidence supporting a causal association between domestic violence and psychiatric disorders in both directions.. Psychiatric disorders can render a women more vulnerable to domestic violence and domestic violence can damage mental health. Studies have examined this theoretical link based on self reports of inter-parental violence witness during childhood and adolescence. However, no study has examined whether emerging adults who currently witness inter-parental violence are more likely to exhibit violence in their own intimate relationship. Depression and aggression: Links to Domestic ViolenceMen, who engaged in infrequent binge drinking, compared to those who never binged were less likely to be depressed. Women’s aggression was associated with a greater likelihood of depression.
