2. Preparing the Bride The bride is similarly prepared by her koumbara – or
maid of honor and dressed by her friends. On the bottom of the bride’s
shoes are written the names of all her unmarried friends. The names that
get worn away by the end of the night are the names of the women who
will be married soon themselves. The bride, once she is dressed,
traditionally leaves with her father.
3. The other characteristic and highly recognized Greek celebrations point is the
tradition of breaking dishes to ward off bad luck. This tradition dates back to
deep history, so its origin is rather unknown , although it is said that previously
the newly married couples broke dishes on the doors of their new homes to
ward off evil spirits
4. Greek Orthodox tradition for commitment is as important as marriage
itself , and that is why they always held against the family of the two
partners . During the celebration of the commitment the spouses
exchanged rings are blessed first by the priest at the time ( will be
blessed then again during the wedding ) and place them on the left hand
..
5. Contrary to our weddings where the groom waits for the bride at the altar ,
Greek weddings are characterized by the groom waits for the bride at the
door of the church to come together after loading white candles.
Traditionally the bride arrived at the church mounted on a donkey , but
over time this has changed so, maybe to celebrate our wedding smelling
like a donkey is not ideal, but tradition is tradition , no?
