GCSE Art & Design covers a range of activities and in-depth
assignments. You will have the opportunity to experiment
and express yourself through different media in order to
explore your artistic strengths and preferences.
There are a wide range of options for your projects

GCSE
Art
&
Design
Each project needs to cover these 4 assessment objectives:
 Develop – how you develop your ideas by researching the work of other artists
(Critical Studies)
 Experiment (Refine/Explore) – how you explore your ideas using different
materials and approaches
 Record – how you explore your ideas with drawing and other media/materials
 Present – how you present your ideas in sketchbooks and final pieces
How will I be assessed?
Unit 1—Portfolio (worth 60% of overall mark) - You will create a portfolio of artwork
based around a topic and artist/s of your choice. You will experiment with a variety of art
materials and techniques. All the work you create, including pieces outside your
sketchbooks, homework and mock exams during year 10 and up to Christmas in year 11
can be included. There will be a controlled assessment at the end of the unit.
Unit 2 – Exam Project (worth 40% overall mark) - you will complete an externally set project using
your preferred art materials and techniques. The exam board (OCR) will give you a starting point
around which you produce your own short project, only 12 weeks, starting in January of year 11. All
your sketchbook work for this project and the final piece at the end of the project are marked
together. There will be a 10 hour controlled assessment at the end of the unit in which to produce
your final piece.
