Safety Responsibility (SR-22) Document
What is an SR-22?
An SR-22 is a form number and means Safety Responsibility. The SR-22 documents that you have auto insurance that
at least covers minimum liability. An SR-22 is a vehicle liability insurance document used by some state Department
of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices to document proof of insurance and is different from your auto insurance policy.
How do I know if I need an SR-22?
The Department of Motor may require an SR-22 from a driver to reinstate his or her driving privileges following an
uninsured car accident, conviction of another traffic-related offense, such as a DUI, driving without insurance or
driving with a suspended license.
You might need an SR-22 for of the following:
A DUI or DWI or any serious moving violation
An at-fault accident while driving without insurance
Repeat traffic offenses or too many tickets in a short time period
A revoked or suspended license
A conviction of driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI).

How do I get an SR-22?
To obtain an SR-22, you’ll need to go through an insurance provider. Only an insurance company that is filed with the
state can issue SR-22s. If you need an SR-22, you’ll first need to purchase a car insurance policy or if you don’t have
a vehicle, you will need a “non-owner” policy. Your insurance company files the SR-22 with the DMV. The
insurance company that issues the SR-22 is required to notify the state if your SR-22 insurance cancels for any reason.
If you have not provided the state with a new SR-22 certificate, the state will assume you are no longer in compliance
with the law and will suspend your legal driving privileges.
How long will I need an SR-22?
Should the state or court order you to file a SR-22 form, you will likely have to file the form for a specific number of
years, which is usually three years and up to five years for a DUI from the date of your license reinstatement. Even if
you relocate to another state, you must complete the SR-22 filing requirements for the state that you moved from and
your new liability limits will need to meet the minimums required by law in your former state.
