Red Wing Shoe Co. Finalizes Restructuring of Domestic Manufacturing Operations
RED WING, Minn. (October 23, 2012) – Red Wing Shoe Company announced today it will
complete the manufacturing restructuring plan previously announced three years ago. The
restructuring will result in the final closing of the Danville, KY manufacturing facility. The plant
had been operating at a third of its former capacity.
“Three years ago, we announced a plan to restructure our domestic manufacturing operations
in response to economic conditions. We had planned to consolidate our operations at two
plants, resulting in the closure of the Danville plant in early 2010,” stated Dave Murphy,
President of Red Wing Shoes. “Fortunately, demand for our footwear increased and we needed
to continue to operate the Danville plant albeit at reduced levels until our other facilities were
able to add capacity and absorb the increased demand. Shoemaking is a skilled trade and it
takes time to recruit and train workers to our high standards. Keeping Danville open gave us the
flexibility we needed to meet customer demand.”
Red Wing will shift the remaining Danville production to its Red Wing, MN and Potosi, MO
factories. The closure will affect 68 employees at the Danville facility. As part of the re-
structuring, the company added 20,000 square feet of space to the Potosi facility in 2011, along
with hiring more than 90 new employees over the past 3 years. Employment at the Red Wing,
MN manufacturing facility is up 20% since the original restructuring plan was announced.

2. Red Wing Shoe Co. Finalizes Restructuring of Domestic Manufacturing Operations/Add Two
“Over the past three years, our domestic manufacturing team has continued to deliver
significant improvements in productivity,” explained Murphy. “Quality has also improved and
we continue to be more responsive to our customers’ needs. In the near term, this
restructuring will allow us to manufacture the same volume of footwear, with outstanding
quality, at lower costs in our two remaining facilities. In the long term, this restructuring will
allow our capacity to be scaled to meet increased future demand.”
The plant will officially close December 31, 2012. The company is working with local and state
resources to assist the affected employees in their search for new employment.
