Promise and Problems
The study of how heredity affects living beings is
called genetic research. It studies thegenes of all biological
species includinghumans, plantsand animals to get needed
information about them. It has contributed in identifying
the genes that are related with some serious diseases and
birth defects. It has also helped doctors to inform their
patients about the possible risk of such genes for
themselves and their children.
The prevention and treatment of many incurable and
fatal diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart diseases have
become possiblethrough gene therapy. Scientists, research
institutes, biotech companies and investors have become
aware of the potential of genetic research and therapy in
the treatments of patients who suffered from immune
deficiency, cancer heart disease and diabetes.
Today genetic researchers have made progress for
curing the fatal diseases, but at the same time, they have
also made serious errors which caused the deaths of some
concerned patients. Before they had judged the possible
risks and consequences seriously, they hastily started
clinical trails. Some major problems remained on the way
of genetic science. Lack of proper precaution and

2. knowledge, unfair competition between commercial
biotechnology companies and researchers,
commercialization in field of medicine and health etc. are
the major problems of medicine and genetic research.
Though the people’s opinion is divided for against
genetic research on the basis of its promises and problems,
it is necessary to become aware of the possible scope of
genetic research in curing fatal diseases and need to invest
more money and time to achieve the desired success.
