- The great strides walk benifting the CFF
- What is CF? Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States today. A defective gene causes the body to produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus. This abnormal mucus leads to chronic and life-threatening lung infections and impairs digestion. Currently, there is no cure. With more than two-dozen potential therapies in the pipeline, people with CF are likely to enjoy long, healthy lives, while pursuing their goals and dreams to the fullest. My thoughts about CF and planning for the walk When I first found out about this project CF was the first cause that came to my mind. My sorority host the Great Strides walk benifitting the CFF every year at UCF since we lost a sister to this terrible disease a few years ago. I was a little nervous though because I didn’t know exactly what went into planning such a large scale event. I got in contact with out Great Strides chair person and she put me in contact with someone at the CFF who gave me some things to do to help plan the walk. I was also concerned with meeting the children who have CF because knew it would sad to hear their stories and find out what they have to go through on a day to day basis.
- Great strides walk was held at the university of central florida’s memory mall. This is a grassy area in front of the brand new arena. Memory mall plays host to many events including tailgating, pick up sports and other philanthropy actives. The main hosts were kkg and the walk took place on march 11. kkg had a sister pass away from cf, and this is why they are so involved in helping to plan and host this walk. This is the 2 nd time its been held at memory mall. The route for the walk takes you through the beautiful UCF campus and back to memory mall.
- Cystic fibrosis is the most common life-limiting autosomal recessive disease among people of European heritage. [82] In the United States, approximately 30,000 individuals have CF; most are diagnosed by six months of age. Approximately 1 in 25 people of European descent, and one in 30 of Caucasian Americans, [83] is a carrier of a cystic fibrosis mutation. C f is less common in Hispanics , Africans and Asians Although technically a rare disease , cystic fibrosis is ranked as one of the most widespread life-shortening genetic diseases. It is most common among nations in the Western world. Cystic fibrosis is diagnosed in males and females equally. For unclear reasons, males tend to have a longer life expectancy than females [89][90] although recent studies suggest this gender gap may no longer exist in younger patients with access to excellent health care facilities. [91][92]
- I am a senior mathematics education major with a minor in american sign language. I just finished my first internship at university hs this semester and I cannot wait to start my full time internship in the fall. I am also a member of the HH chapter of KKG where I was treasurer for 2009 and am currently the marshal. I am very involved in my sorority and love being so active. I also play a lot of intramural sports including soccer, floor hockey and softball. In my free time I love to read any thing and everything.
- Since our chapter hosts this walk every year I talked to our chairperson about what I could do to help plan and set up for the walk. A few weeks before the walk I started going around to local businesses and giving out letters asking for donations. The letter gave them some information about cf and asked them for donations that we could use in the raffle. I went to many different shopping centers around the area and distributed about 50 letters. A few businesses gave donations on the spot, these mostly included gift certificates and free coupons. A week later I went back to the other places to see if they were interested in donating, I got a few more gift certificates and coupons this way. Over all I collected some good raffle prizes. In the weeks leading up to the walk I also helped advertise for the event. I handed out pamphlets that had information about how to raise money and sign up for the walk. I also worked with our chair person for the walk on setting up some logistics, like when the walk should start, the route it will take and how the tents should be organized. The day of the walk I got their early to help set up tables and tents. We had to decorate the tables and organize them into different sections. There was the registration area, tshirt pick-up, food and drink area, and a spot for the dj. We also had to put signs up all around the route so people would know where to go. Then I participated in the walk with the rest of my sorority sisters. It was a fun and rewarding two mile walk around campus and it was great to see my hard work pay off.
- The walk really served a variety of different people of all ages. There were parents, children and college students out there to support the walkers or walk along with them. Teams came out in full force to support someone they knew who has cf or has passed away from it. Two of our main teams were Hannahs bananas and jeremeys crew. Hannah and Jeremy are both young children with cf whos family and friends have been coming out to the walk for the last couple of years. These two teams are also always top fundraisers. There were roughly 300 people out at the walk, but the efforts we made will help thousands. All of the money being raised is going to help find a cure for cf which can prevent this disease from affecting the lives of other children and young adults.
- It has given me a chance to meet children with cf and they have really made me want to try harder to raise money for this great cause. It has also given me some insight into how much planning goes into a big time event like the cf walk. I think just seeing how much support this cause has Is great and had the most impact on me. From this experience I have gained knowledge about planning events which I think well be invaluable in the classroom. It also taught me about working with students have differences that could affect their ability to be fully involved in class. http://www.slideshare.net/
