1. In what ways does your media product USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE forms and conventions of existing media products? MISE EN SCENE ,[object Object]
the costume and props fitted in with the genre of the soap , this also added to realism EDITING ,[object Object]
I researched different titles and text layouts,[object Object]
I researched different titles and text layouts,[object Object]
EDITING Neighbors took a different approach on title cards they had the text and brand logo covering the actors face. EDITING I chose to use a transition before my title card so it came in differently to other soaps, I decided not to use a image on the title card and to just have informing text.
SUBVERSION Waterloo Road Close up shot is able to capture most of the actors expressions to create involvement from the audience.. Shearwater Road A wide shot of the girls approaching , allowing to see there surroundings, expressing and body language DIFFERENCE DIFFERENCE SOUND Waterloo road Uses the actual caters speech to establish setting and narrative and dieteticsound Shearwater road Pop soundtrack used to create meaning for audience and tell the story TITLE CARDS Waterloo road Use the title cards to give the audience a idea of whets going to happen. Locations also established by external shotsand surroundings Shearwater road Title card isn't shown till the end of shot. Location established via external shots of the college and houses.
ACCENTS Waterloo road Because waterloo road is set in a school a lot of slang and jargon is used witch createsrealism. Shearwater road . The students and the teacher speaks different, the students use more slang but the teacher speaks in formal language and doesn’t use any slang witch creates the characteristics. Waterloo road Waterloo road is set in a school located in Rochdale. Shearwater road . Shearwater road is set in a college in Stockport We used lots of similar surroundings to waterloo road, such as college buildings, houses, REGIONS CHALLENGE We decided to challenge ourselves when making this soap trailer by trying to interpret another soap trailer we saw. After attempting to do so we decide on making our own and just adding the same story line. I myself found this challenging because it was hard to convert their storyline into are own.
SIMILARITIES I decided to focus on same shot types and angles used in waterloo road and transfer them over to my soap. I did this buy deconstructing the trailer and spotting the different shot types. I decided to use close up shots, over the shoulder and medium shots. I knew this would grab the audiences attention and make my trailer look more interesting and appealing. I also used similar characters to increase the shot.
GENDER and ETHNICITY GENRE Waterloo road The main gender waterloo road aspires to attract is both male and female. I personally think this because they use a mixture of male and female characters with different stories. Ethnicity is very equal in waterloo road and they feature a very mixed society within the program witch effects the soap a lot by attracting different audiences. Shearwater road The gender I tried to attract when making shearwater road was both male and female like waterloo road. This is because if you try and make the TV soap suitable for male and female people you will therefore attract more audience. The ethnicity used in my soap is very little, this is because I didn’t have enough time to think about it fully, but if I was to redo my TV soap I would defiantly try to improve on ethnicity and use a different mix of people to make my soap more culture. Waterloo road The genre of waterloo road is a TV soap. The main audience for this soap is young teenagers ageing between 10-16, this is because the actors in the soap are a similar age, so the audience feel they can connect with them. Shearwater road The genre of shearwater road is a also a TV soap. The main audience for this soap is older teenagers to young adults ageing from 16-21, similar to waterloo road this is because of the setting of the soap and the actors, therefore young adults feel they can connect with the soap itself.
NARRATIVES Waterloo road Within a waterloo road trailer you see the different characters and names, this is because the soap wants the audience to connect with the characters so by telling the audience their names, the audience feel as if they know the characters already and will feel more comfortable watching their different stories play threw. As the trailer carries on switches into different stories about the 4 characters shown witch are actually teachers. This trailer is different to usual waterloo road trailers because normally they are all about the school kids. The camera shots used vary from extreme close ups, close ups,mid shots to wide shots. NARRATIVES Shearwater Road When I created my trailer I decided to make my trailer different then waterloo roads, simply because I was only using one narrative. I chose only to use one narrative because I thought as it was the first trailer my TV soap would have, I added different shots from different points of view that led up to one story I did this because wanted the story to be clear as it would be the main story for this soap. I used a similar pattern of shots as to water look road ranging from extreme close ups to wide shots. I did this simply because I wanted the TV trailer to be interesting and grab the audiences attention, one way I thought this would happen was by involving different camera shots.
SOUND TRACK Waterloo road From watching different waterloo road trailers I noticed that they don’t have a soundtrack to go with the acting, they simply just let the actors speech be heard. I thought this was a bit odd because I think using a soundtrack tells the story of the trailer and is more effect because it appeals more to the audience. Shearwater Road I decided to put a soundtrack onto my trailer, I didn’t just want a soundtrack running threw my trailer so I decided to dip the soundtrack when an actor said something important, I think using this technique widen my audience and the effect my trailer would have on them. The song I chose to use was a song that actually told the story of my trailer, it was about a teacher having a affair with a student, witch is the identical to mine, therefore the soundtrack improved my trailer a lot. LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE Sound tracks I thought would suit the trailer DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME This is the soundtrack I used. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLp9qWAkEVQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zp3LPRzuXo CHOOSING A SOUNDTRACK When choosing my soundtrack I had to listen to all different types of genre of song. This is simply because I wanted my soundtrack to tell the story of my trailer. I listened to songs such as ‘ I love the way you lie’ ‘ obsessed ‘ and ‘chasing cars’ I chose these songs because I knew they would fit the genre of my TV soap. OBSESSED Sound tracks I thought would suit the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1Yt0xJKDY8 CHASING CARS Sound tracks I thought would suit the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GemKqzILV4w
2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
SYNERGY My TV magazine front cover, trailer and billboard all relegate to one another. From the tag lines to the characters. I decided to make my front cover as simple as possible. I did this because I wanted my TV soap ‘ shearwater road ‘ to stand out and be the main attraction. I took a different approach to my billboard, I decided not to use any characters face’s on it, I decided to set the genre of the soap and just use a piece of scarp paper and create a scene that looked like a teachers desk, to imply that a student had left a note, I also added text witch created a tense atmosphere . All three of my ancillary products create the same brand identity and are all relate to the same audience.
This is my TV Soap magazine cover. I decided to use a mixture of colors to fit with the genre of a ‘ TV magazine’. The characters and costume I decided to dress my cover star in was something that had been worn in the trailer, I did this because I thought it would benefit my magazine by catching the audiences eye because they will of recognized the characters easily. From looking at my magazine front cover, I think you can automatically tell what the genre of the magazine is, because of the conventions used such as a cover mount, bar code, columns, cover star, price, mast head and banner.
From looking at my TV magazine. I don’t think you can tell it is related to my TV soap programed by the colors. So I decided to make sure all the images used were aimed at the same audience, who would watch shearwater road. I did this simply because it would create a bigger fan base for my TV programed.
For my billboard I decided to take a different approach to it, I chose not to put a image in it and create a scene witch the viewer can relate to. My billboard is very similar to my other products because I used the same phrase ‘ secrets’ and similar colors. My billboard is very similar to my title card on the end of my trailer, I used the same logo, font, and layout. I decided to do this because I wanted my ancillary's to look professional. I designed my billboard, on Microsoft publisher. I decided not to use Photoshop because I thought I would have a more professional look on publisher. I wanted to keep the brand identity so I kept the font the same as my title card, by doing this I had to use ‘my fonts’ again and find the correct colors for the e4 website by using the e4 style guide.
My title card shows how I have used different conventions and different fonts/colors and logos, I did this because I wanted my title card to be similar to a e4 title card/ billboard I found on the e4 website of a TV drama called skins. I decided not to make a identical title card, but to make the font, text size and logo all similar. THESE ARE BILBORADS AND TITLE CARDS I LOOKED AT
I created my title card on Photoshop. I decided to use Photoshop fro this product because I wanted a very professional look and I wanted the TV trailer to look as if it was mint to be shown on a e4 ad break. Photoshop helped me develop more skills when making this title card. And I feel I benighted a lot . I created my e4 logo on fireworks. I deiced to create this on fireworks because It’s a good technology to make pictures look professional, because I had to cut out a lot of the background this program was defiantly the best to use.
I found a internet sight called ‘my fonts’ this sight had a font called ‘ICT AMERICAN TYPEWRITTER’ this font was identical to the e4 font, as I chose to use the e4 logo and publish my TV soap on e4 I found this sight helpful. I went onto the channel 4 website and found the e4 style guide, this helped me found my logo and the right font to use and how to lay out my actual billboard.
3.What have you learned from AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
This is my first piece of planning work I did for TV soap trailer. Even though ugly betty is a TV drama I thought this would be a good trailer to deconstruct. I found that this trailer used a huge amount of synergy, as the trailer begins a dress appears, witch indicates it’s a fashion programed. The shots used in this trailer consist of close ups to long shots witch form into tracking shots. This is my second piece of TV trailer planning. I wanted to look at different genres so I decoded to loo at one tree hill. In this trailer the males are made to look outgoing and smart as the females, dependent on the males, this creates the genre of the TV drama straight away. The miss en scene is shown in different places such as home, school and work, this creates the feeling of a busy life style. The audience feedback I received was positive, I found I understood the trailers well enough to deconstruct them. I think by receiving audience feedback I have lent that I can spot media technologies from different trailers.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH AUDIENCE RESEARCH I found my audience after doing audience research such as. Questionnaires, ace to face interviews and also research into different TV soap programs such as waterloo road, east enders, holly oaks and neighbors. I did this because I wanted to find out witch genre of soap would suit me best. I found a internet sight called ‘ up tribe’ this helped m e find out what genre of soap suited me best. This website is designed , for ‘youth today ‘ this was a great way to find out what sub culture I suited, witch indicated what audience I should aim my TV soap at.
QUESTIONAIRES I found doing a questionnaire on soaps helpful, this showed me what genre of TV soap different ages enjoy most.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK AUDIENCE FEEDBACK The audience feedback I received about my trailer. Was mostly about sound. I found it difficult to make my soundtrack flow with the speech of the actors, because decided for the soundtrack to run threw the whole trailer I had to dip the sound of the actors and the track. I had to make sure every word was heard correctly so the story line made sense and the trailer flowed smoothly. By doing this I needed to get feedback. So I decided to let my teacher and peers watch my trailer. The feedback I received was positive but I needed to change a few slides around and dip the sound abet more, so the actors were heard clearly. AUDIENCE FEEDBACK AUDIENCE FEEDBACK When receiving my feedback I noticed I had a two slides the wrong way round. These slides contained someone sending a text and someone receiving. I had put them the opposite way round to create suspicion to the audience, but from the feedback I received I decided to change the slides around, this way the audience fully understood what was going on. I had to dip my sound at different parts to let the actors be heard clearly. These two clips looked good ether way but to make the story more cellar to the audience I swooped them round, so the text was shown first.
4.Howv did you use MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES in the CONSTRUCTION and RESEARCH, PLANNING and EVALUATION stages?
CONSTRUCTION PHOTOSHOP POWERPOINT ADOBE PREMIERE For the construction of my trailer I used different media technology's such as, video cameras, still cameras, adobe premier 8, adobe Photoshop and Microsoft publisher. These technology's helped me create my TV trailer at the best of my ability. I used Photoshop for my title card and draft magazine front cover. I used this because I wanted a more professional look. By using Photoshop you can create a better ancillary I used PowerPoint to create my evaluation. I did this because you can use different slides in different ways and a master slide creates a nice effect for a evolution. When creating my TV trailer I used adobe premiere. I used this because it gives a professional look to trailer and it was easy to navigate.
I used different transitions for my TV soap, I decide to start the clip with a cross dissolve then when the clip finished I dipped it to black. I did this because it made my TV trailer actually look like a professional trailer you would see published on TV. Within my trailer I wanted to add in as much camera work as I could. So I decide to try and get at least one of every shot. I ended up using more than one of every shot but this led up to a story line that made sense. Close up shot. Because I wanted the audience to know this was a romantic story line I needed to get establishing shots to prove what was going on. I decided on a extreme close up of hands touching witch indicates to the audience something is going on.
To make sure the story was clear to the audience I used a lot of wide shots. I did this because it’s a shot witch can involve as much as possible, facial expressions and the environment witch creates the miss en scene for the soap. I decided to add a panning shot into my trailer, I did this because it captures the surroundings as wall as facile expressions. But it forms tension and suspicion. DIFFERENT SHOT TYPES
I used this tracking shot to intense the fact that she was being watched or followed. I added this clip next after the tracking shot to establish the fact they are being followed. DIFFERENT SHOT TYPES
I designed a comic strip for a prelemirty task, I did this to give me ideas on how to create my final soap opera. RESEARCH To create a TV trailer to the best of my ability I did a lot of research. From watching different genres of soap dramas on YouTube to creating my own preliminary task; comic strip trailer, to searching for similar products, creating questionnaires and creating my own blog. This all helped me develop more skills and prepare me for making my TV trailer. Creating a questionnaire helped me find out what age range and gender id be aiming my TV soap at. By watching different TV soaps, I knew what I had to create and different ways I could interact with the audience.
I created a comic strip just to practice editing. Here is my story board of a soap I decided to add in different shot types such as close ups, wide shots and over the shoulder shots. I created a blog for my tasks and to keep everything in order. PLANNING I started to do by planning by digital storyboarding a soap opera watching existing products and deconstruction them and adding to my blog and writing about the miss en scene, editing, camera work and lighting.

Shearwater road is set in a college in Stockport We used lots of similar surroundings to waterloo road, such as college buildings, houses, REGIONS CHALLENGE We decided to challenge ourselves when making this soap trailer by trying to interpret another soap trailer we saw. • 15.

  • 18. 2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • 21. From looking at my TV magazine. I don’t think you can tell it is related to my TV soap programed by the colors. So I decided to make sure all the images used were aimed at the same audience, who would watch shearwater road. I did this simply because it would create a bigger fan base for my TV programed.
  • 23. My title card shows how I have used different conventions and different fonts/colors and logos, I did this because I wanted my title card to be similar to a e4 title card/ billboard I found on the e4 website of a TV drama called skins. I decided not to make a identical title card, but to make the font, text size and logo all similar. THESE ARE BILBORADS AND TITLE CARDS I LOOKED AT
  • 26. 3.What have you learned from AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
  • 29. QUESTIONAIRES I found doing a questionnaire on soaps helpful, this showed me what genre of TV soap different ages enjoy most.
  • 30. I had to dip my sound at different parts to let the actors be heard clearly. These two clips looked good ether way but to make the story more cellar to the audience I swooped them round, so the text was shown first.
  • 31. 4.Howv did you use MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES in the CONSTRUCTION and RESEARCH, PLANNING and EVALUATION stages?
  • 35. I used this tracking shot to intense the fact that she was being watched or followed. I added this clip next after the tracking shot to establish the fact they are being followed. DIFFERENT SHOT TYPES
  • 38. I decided to add a e4 icon in the bottom right hand corner of my PowerPoint. I did this because I wanted the PowerPoint to still be linked to TV, and as my TV soap is published on e4 I thought this would be a good idea. I embedded YouTube links into my PowerPoint to the audience could listen to a sample of soundtracks I weans going to use for my TV soap also the soundtrack I chose to use. EVALUATION I found using PowerPoint easy because you can edit pictures and boxes, you can add in different shapes such as arrows and circles, this therefore makes my PowerPoint look more interesting and appealing. I decided to do my evolution on PowerPoint because I thought the mediatechnology's it consists of would benefit my PowerPoint in many ways, such as master slide and editing. I found using PowerPoint easy .
