Insomnia called Anidra in Ayurveda is natural phenomenon of giving rest to mind
and body.Along with diet, sleep is important for good health and well being. Sleep
is one of the most important pillar of health because a good sleep enjoyed at
proper time and for proper period, tends to improve the growth, strength, mental
ability and vigor. This quiet state gives the body and mind a chance to renew,
refresh and restore themselves and refills our power of activity which we loose in
daily routine
And Insomnia is inability to fall sleep at night.
According to Ayurvedic prospective Doshas (Ayurvedic Humors) Tarpak
Kapha,Sadhak Pitta and Prana vata are responsible for this disease.Tarpak Kapha
is sub dosha of Kapha. It nourishes the brain cells and facilitates a good
sleep.Imbalance of tarpak kapha causes poor nourishment of brain cells, leading to
Insomnia.Sadhak Pitta is sub dosha of Pitta and is located in heart. It controls
emmotions, desires and spirituality.Imbalance of sadhak pitta makes a person
demanding, workaholic.Thereby leading to situations that may cause lack of
sleep.Prana Vata is sub dosha of Vata. Its linked to insomnia, worry, anxiety and
problems like depression.Prana vata makes the nervous system sensitive and this
sensitive nervous system coupled with an aggravated Prana Vata leads to
insomnia. In each individual different combination of dosha’s can lead to
disease.Ayurvedic treatments of insomnia focuses on balancing of aggravated
doshas (Body energies) through herbal medicines as well as with customized diet
and life style plans.
Our ancient acharaya’s has described importance of sleep like this:
Acharya Kashyapa highlighted the importance of nidra as; the timely
implemented sleep is an indicator of good health as it brings the normalcy in body
tissues and relaxes the person.
2. Yogaratnakara says that a person who is enjoying sleep does not easily become a
victim of diseases. His life will be with health, vigor and longevity.
Sushruta states that if one remains in a locality that is contributed to the
aggravated dosha, the person need not fear, provided his diet, sleep and regimen
are of such nature as are necessary for the pacification of doshas concerned.
“NIDRA TU SEVITA KALAI DHATUSAMYA MATEENDTAAM
PUSHTI VARNAM BALOTSHAM VAHINIDEEPITAM KAROTEEH”
It means sleeping on right time in the night increases our digestion, removes head
related problems.Increases strength, removes our lazyness ultimately provides us
more strength to work.Sleep provides rest to our mind and body.
