Unit 9: “books matter”
We use so and such to add emphasis and
intensity to nouns, adjectives or adverbs.
In this way, they are similar to very.
Eg. It is very hot! It is so hot!
It’s a very hot day! It’s such a hot day!
So and Such means Tan in Spanish
How and when do we use so?
 Before adjectives and adverbs.
He was so nervous (that) he couldn’t sleep.
You speak so fast (that) is difficult to understand
you.
 So + many + a plural noun.
JP worked with so many people last month that he
has taken a vacation.
 So + much + uncountable nouns.
She has so much money that she doesn’t know how
to spend it.
How and when do we use such?
 Before a noun / an adjective + noun.
His new look was such a surprise that people still
talking about him.
They have such beautiful eyes!
 We can use so or such + that to talk about
extremes and results.
The movie was so boring that I fell asleep.
It was such a big lunch that everybody had
stomachache.
