2. Project: a toolkit to
support the creation of a
peer-mentoring service
connecting formerly
incarcerated successful
college students to
students beginning their
college careers after
prison. The service helps
new students develop the
right set of skills and
networks to facilitate their
success in college.
3. Context: The College Initiative (CI) is a reentry
education program for formerly incarcerated people in
New York City who want to begin or continue college. CI
wanted to create a service to minimize the college drop-
out rates among this population caused by problems
such as the lack of time management and academic
skills, housing and job insecurity common during the
post-incarceration period.
4. Design role:
The design team used
service design methods and
tools (such as personas,
customer journeys, and
blueprinting) with CI staff
and students in 15 co-
design sessions to create
the final toolkit.
6. Project: a two-year
action based on exhibitions
and workshops to help
NYC communities to
promote sustainable
lifestyles.
7. Context: communities in NYC are no longer waiting
for governments or businesses to take action but are
starting to organize their own resources for more
sustainable city living.
8. Design role:
· Find often-hidden
examples of social
innovation in the city;
· Help those initiatives
become easier and more
enjoyable using service
design methods and tools;
· Show others how they
could create similar
alternatives for themselves.
