Reliance Communications
FOUNDER OF COMPANY
Few men in history have made as dramatic a contribution to their country’s economic
fortunes as did the founder of Reliance, Sh. Dhirubhai H Ambani. Fewer still have left
behind a legacy that is more enduring and timeless.
As with all great pioneers, there is more than one unique way of describing the true
genius of Dhirubhai: The corporate visionary, the unmatched strategist, the proud patriot,
the leader of men, the architect of India’s capital markets, the champion of shareholder
interest.
But the role Dhirubhai cherished most was perhaps that of India’s greatest wealth creator.
In one lifetime, he built, starting from the proverbial scratch, India’s largest private sector
enterprise.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 10
When Dhirubhai embarked on his first business venture, he had a seed capital of barely
US$ 300 (around Rs 14,000). Over the next three and a half decades, he converted this
fledgling enterprise into a Rs 60,000 crore colossus—an achievement which earned
Reliance a place on the global Fortune 500 list, the first ever Indian private company to
do so.
Dhirubhai is widely regarded as the father of India’s capital markets. In 1977, when
Reliance Textile Industries Limited first went public, the Indian stock market was a place
patronized by a small club of elite investors which dabbled in a handful of stocks.
Undaunted, Dhirubhai managed to convince a large number of first-time retail investors
to participate in the unfolding Reliance story and put their hard-earned money in the
Reliance Textile IPO, promising them, in exchange for their trust, substantial return on
their investments. It was to be the start of one of great stories of mutual respect and
reciprocal gain in the Indian markets.
Under Dhirubhai’s extraordinary vision and leadership, Reliance scripted one of the
greatest growth stories in corporate history anywhere in the world, and went on to
become India’s largest private sector enterprise.
Through out this amazing journey, Dhirubhai always kept the interests of the ordinary
shareholder uppermost in mind, in the process making millionaires out of many of the
initial investors in the Reliance stock, and creating one of the world’s largest shareholder
families.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 11

BUSINESS
Reliance Communications will offer a complete range of telecom services, covering
mobile and fixed line telephony including broadband, national and international long
distance services, data services and a wide range of value added services and applications
that will enhance productivity of enterprises and individuals. Reliance India Mobile, the
first of Reliance Communications' initiatives was launched on December 28, 2002, the
70th birthday of the Reliance group founder, Shri. Dhirubhai H. Ambani.
This marks the beginning of Reliance's dream of ushering in a digital revolution in India
by becoming a major catalyst in improving quality of life and changing the face of India.
It aims to achieve this by putting the power of information and communication in the
hands of the people of India at affordable costs.
Reliance Communications will extend its efforts beyond the traditional value chain to
develop and deploy telecom solutions for India's farmers, businesses, hospitals,
government and public sector organizations.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 18
NETWORK
Telecommunication networks are the infrastructure for provisioning Communications
services. All businesses today are dependent on telecom to continue their day-to-day
operations. The range and quality of services that can be provisioned is determined by the
quality of the network deployed.
The Reliance Communications network consists of 60,000 kilometers of optical fiber
cables spanning the length and breadth of India. These cables can carry thousands of
billions of bits per second and can instantly connect one part of the country with another.
This physical network and its associated infrastructure will cover over 600 cities and
towns in 18 of the country's 21 circles, 229 of the nation’s 323 Long Distance Charging
Areas (LDCAs) and broadband connectivity to over 190 cities. This infrastructure will be
Reliance Communications Ltd. 19
backed by state-of-the-art information management systems and a customer-focused
organization.
An interesting aspect of the network is the manner in which these fibers are
interconnected and deployed. Reliance's architecture is so fault-tolerant that the chances
of failure are virtually nil. Reliance's ring and mesh architecture topology is the most
expensive component to implement, but assures the highest quality of uninterrupted
service, even in the event of failure or breakage in any segment of the network. Reliance
has 77 such rings across the country with at least three alternative paths available in
metros. Connected on this topology, the service has virtually no chance of disruption in
quality performance.
Reliance's objective is to create value for our customers. Reliance will innovate
ceaselessly so that state-of-the-art technology can be leveraged to create products and
services that are affordable.
Access networks determine the services that can finally be delivered to customer. Our
network has wire line access technologies based on fiber as well as copper. Fiber in the
access network makes broadband services easy to deploy. The wireless access network
deployed for CDMA 1X is spectrum efficient and provides better quality of voice than
other networks and higher data rates. CDMA 1X also provides an up gradation path to
future enhancements.

Reliance Network Advantage
• Fiber in the last mile – Ring protects your phone from cable cuts
• Fiber to building cluster – No tapping of your calls; immunity
towards rains and cross talk
Reliance Communications Ltd. 41
• CAT5 cabling in the building – Higher Grade Copper
• “Last Mile Copper” becomes last few feet – Enhanced Reliability.
Regular Features
1. Direct line for every user – Each extension on your EPABX is
assigned a unique telephone number because of the Direct Inward
Dialing (DID) feature. This means every employee gets a direct line
on which he/ she can be contacted from anywhere.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 42
2. Digital Quality- You can enjoy the benefits of Digital voice quality,
that’s crystal clear and distortion- free. Moreover, a Digital service
means that your line is tamper proof and hence it cannot be tapped by
unauthorized people.
3. Saving on recurring costs - You get a direct line for every employee,
without paying regular rentals for every line. Since callers can now
reach your employees directly on their extensions, lesser number of
operators is required.
4. Lesser wires, higher uptime – Hassles associated with managing a
complicated jungle of wires (as in analog trunking) are a thing of past.
Now with the Reliance E1 DID trunking solution, you get only 4
wires for every 30 channels. So, the wiring at your EPABX becomes
simple, clean and easy to manage, leading to higher uptime as outages
reduce significantly.
Additional Features
DID Number Presentation (DNP) – Today when you call from your
EPABX, the CLIP that goes out is that of your board number and not your
extension/ DID number, thus making it difficult for the called party to
identify you. Our ISDN PRI service comes pre-enabled with DNP feature so
that your direct phone number is displayed to the caller.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 43
Enhanced Service Availability – Performance and availability is no longer
a cause for concern. Reliance has invested in a state-of-the-art fibre optic
network with ring architecture right up to the building, to provide automatic
recovery of traffic, in case of failures.
No Congestion or Busy Signals – No congestion or busy signals for your
callers. Our E1 trunk ensures that a call will be connected through the first
available free channel from a group of channels
VALUE PROPOSITION
• Direct Line for every user.
• Simplified Implementation and higher uptime.
• Opex Savings with reduced operators.
• Attractive Tariffs.

Mittal to expand his manufacturing capacity elsewhere in the telecommunications

Reliance Communications Ltd. 53
The foundation of Telecom Network in India was laid by the British
sometime in 19th century. The history of BSNL is linked with the beginning
of Telecom in India. In 19th century and for almost entire 20th century, the
Telecom in India was operated as a Government of India wing. Earlier it was
part of erstwhile Post & Telegraph Department (P&T). In 1975 the
Department of Telecom (DoT) was separated from P&T. DoT was
responsible for running of Telecom services in entire country until 1985
when Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) was carved out of
DoT to run the telecom services of Delhi and Mumbai. It is a well known
fact that BSNL was carved out of Department of Telecom to provide level
playing field to private telecoms. Subsequently in 1990s the telecom sector
was opened up by the Government for Private investment, therefore it
became necessary to separate the Government's policy wing from
Operations wing. The Government of India corporatized the operations wing
of DoT on October 01, 2007 and named it as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
(BSNL).BSNL operates as a public sector.

Potential Opportunity Areas:
Non-metropolitan cities: Where competition from other private ISPs as
well as VSNL would be less intense. Here marketing expenses would be
lower, and a market could be created through seminars and workshops.
Private ISPs entering at a later date would have to contend with established
loyalties. Primary target audience would be enterprise customers.
Regions with high corporate activity: Such as parts of NCR, Lucknow,
Agra, Moradabad, Rudrapur, Sitarganj, Bareilly, Khatima, and Dehradun
etc. In these areas, it would be easier to get sufficient leased line subscribers
from among research centers, private educational institutions, brass
exporters, major manufacturing facilities and export houses, to make the
Reliance Communications Ltd. 60
initial set-up viable and self-sustaining. Enterprise customers would provide
growth potential, with the backbone paid for by leased line customers.
Tourist and resort areas: Many premium hotels and resorts will require
cyber clubs with Email and surfing facilities, for which leased lines are
needed. Educating these potential customers through seminars, and
providing very reliable service quality can capture these markets. Pricing for
such clients can be higher, thus ensuring lower risk, though with moderate
growth potential due to saturation. Clients would not switch providers easily
if quality were maintained.
Provision of wide range of ancillary services: Due to Internet access being
a recent phenomenon, there is a dearth of related skills, such as information
research and retrieval from the Internet, high-end technical support and
consulting, and end-user training for leveraging the Internet. This is
especially true of non-metropolitan areas. Further, small cyber-clubs with
trained personnel for the public to walk in and use for Email and Web
surfing, much like the ubiquitous PCOs, would generate high revenue.
Private ISPs with such services as part of the initial offering would gain high
market share and customer loyalty.
Regions are poor telecom infrastructure and high industrial density. These
areas are ideal for provision of radio-based leased line Internet access, which
bypasses terrestrial leased lines and provides the highest reliability. High
concentration of automotive or steel goods manufacturers would be a good
starting point.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 61
Pointers for Success:
The key factors for success of being the ISP will be a technical edge,
financial capability to sustain losses over at least two years, high marketing
and promotional budgets, strategic alliances with ancillary service providers,
and lobbying power with the central and state governments. These can be
further examined further:
The technical edge: The track record of ISPs in India, VSNL and the others
before it, has been badly marred by poor service quality. Many Internet users
would happily switch to a new private ISP if given a guarantee of reliability.
"98% Uptime" and "Quality of Service" (available bandwidth) guarantees,
while common place in the developed countries. Serious Internet users,
especially those who depend upon it for business eagerly await such
guarantees. Once credibility is established, pricing can even be higher than
competitors’. This technical edge can only be established and maintained by
proactive, aggressive network design by experienced consultants, coupled
Reliance Communications Ltd. 62
with a 24 hour Network Operations Center manned by well-trained experts
in all aspects of ISP operation. Further, company representative must be
available on 24-hour standby retainers. Close association with the ISPs has
shown that customers are extremely sensitive on issues of service outage and
unavailability of latest technologies.
Financial sustaining power: The private airline industry in India makes a
suitable parallel to what is likely to happen with Private ISPs. Many private
airlines started up, but with high levels of competition and price wars,
coupled with changing government regulations, several could not continue
sustaining losses. The recent closing down of several of the new private
airlines has made the market much more lucrative for those airlines which
survived, so profit margins have shot up, and huge returns on investments
are expected in the next few years. The same will happen with Private ISPs,
since the scrapping of license fees for Private ISPs will allow many Private
ISPs to set up services. Those that survive stand to gain excellent financial
returns in 3 to 4 years. High marketing and promotional budgets: The
opening up of ISP services without a license fee by the DoT will result in
many service providers in each region, and therefore inevitable
cannibalization of each others market share by these providers. The only
way to gain an edge in market share is by developing a larger audience base
through regular Internet technology awareness seminars and workshops,
coupled with aggressive marketing, promotional campaigns and schemes.
Every potential customer converted by a competitor would potentially
recommend that competitor to other customers too. This is especially true in
Reliance Communications Ltd. 63
this industry as the newness of the field makes any user with even a month’s
experience a relative expert for the novices.
Strategic alliances with ancillary service providers: Potential customers
will look for additional services besides Internet access, such as technical
consulting, training, assistance in seeking information from the Internet,
Web site design services, Internet advertising consultants, and newsletters
about Internet resources. It is nonviable for the ISP to maintain full time
staff for all these services that would be required from time to time.
However, these services will be a source of additional significant revenue,
for the ISP and third party service providers it is allied with. Within a year or
so of operations, revenue from this sector would be 25% or more of total
revenue.
Lobbying power with central and state Governments: Again drawing a
parallel with the private airline industry in India, this would be an important
factor for any realistic ISP business plan. Going by track records, the ground
rules for the industry will be changed repeatedly through unilateral policy
announcements by various related Government departments. Like in the
airlines, those startups who are able to get prior knowledge of upcoming
changes in policy, and have the power to influence these changes, will have
better chance of survival as well as the possibility of eliminating
competition. This is a reality in Indian Telecom that can not be ignored.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 64
Customer Satisfaction Survey: The company conducts customer
satisfaction survey for strengthens relationship with the customers. This will
help the company on three ways: Firstly, it will let the company
Know where it lacks, how it could be rectified. Secondly, it make the
customers make them feel that they are important for the company and lastly
in assessment of the sales executives performance.

Suggestions
 Actively participate for sponsorships, owning of events.
 Taking regular feedback from customers, business partners &
employees. This will help the company on three ways:
Firstly, it will let the company know where it lacks, how it could be
rectified. Secondly, it make the customers make them feel that they are

important for the company and lastly in assessment of the sales
executives performance.
 Suggestion Box should be kept in the company so that innovative
ideas from employees should be appreciated which help in getting
cost measures and for smoothen the functioning of the company.
Awards and recognition for valuable contributions to organization.
 As company take more time to provide service so company must try
to provide service within minimum time
 Monthly conferences, seminars and workshops to help in expanding

 Conducting numerous social activities, including Holiday Party and
happy hours to let you get to know the Reliance people on a personal
and professional level.
 Start promotion of branded products at a large scale and slowly keep
penetrating into the market.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 72
Foreseeable Problems:
 Availability of feasibility is the major problem. Thus, if Reliance
wants to penetrate in the remote areas, efforts are required from the
organization to increase its market share.
 Adequate qualified manpower is required to explore the business.
 Technical department needs to be well-trained & co-operative, to
ensure the service quality.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 73
 There are a number of accounts at which the installation of services is
delayed from a couple of months, due to which the company faces
cancellation of orders.
 Laws are in existence in India that can be interpreted to read that
transmission of data with any form of encryption is illegal. Onus of
prevention is upon the service provider concerned. However, much of
current Internet technology, including secure Web servers, PGP
encrypted Email, and Virtual Private Networks, are
 Based on encryption. Prevention may be technically impossible, and
this could be used as grounds for revocation of a Private ISP license.
 A significant source of revenue for local ISP’s is where Reliance
network is not available, due to which the cases become non-feasible
on the basis of technical grounds.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 74
SWOT Analysis
Strength:
 The state-of-art technology Reliance communications is offering.
 Comprehensive Network-The strong back bone high capacity network
(terabit capacity) supported by fibre optic cables laid all over the
country(60,000 Km)
 Aggressive roll out to capture dominant market share & create an
entry barrier.
Weakness:
 Lacks to spread technological awareness.
Reliance Communications Ltd. 75
 Non-feasibility of remote areas.
 Lack of service problem
Opportunity:
 Reliance signs Amalgamation Agreement to acquire Flag Telecom
Group Limited- Plans to acquire submarine network cables from
FLAG Telecom ($220 million) which will drastically reduce the ISD
rates.
 Providing instant connections to the customer making a happy &
satisfied customer base
 Using the CDMA technology, it has revolutionized the data transfer
rates & low cost tariffs, the area of E-commerce, video on demand,
VOIP, Speech Recognition, interactive television.
Threats:
Reliance Communications Ltd. 76
 Local ISP’s providing services at cheaper rates.
 Delay in installations.
 Lack of penetration in the remote areas.
Concluding Observations
The selling up of enterprise broadband products has potential for high
returns on investment. The initial investments are significantly high in order
to penetrate in the remote areas and that too on the optic fiber. This field will
be intensely competitive, and only a few service providers will survive for
this class of service. Those that do survive, stand to gain anywhere up to
70% ROI per annum.
A service that is not well designed right from the planning stage will not be
able to survive, so the use of expert sales force and well trained technical
personnel’s is critically important. Further, the service must be designed to
adopt new Internet technologies as early as possible, regardless of cost.
Resource planning should be done with buffer capacity of 100% or more, to
cope with bursts of growth. Local connectivity options other than POTS,
such as Radio, should be given preference, so that the non-availability of
service shouldn’t be the constraint.

Reliance Communications FOUNDER OF COMPANY Few men in history have made as dramatic a contribution to their country’s economic fortunes as did the founder of Reliance, Sh. Dhirubhai H Ambani. Fewer still have left behind a legacy that is more enduring and timeless. As with all great pioneers, there is more than one unique way of describing the true genius of Dhirubhai: The corporate visionary, the unmatched strategist, the proud patriot, the leader of men, the architect of India’s capital markets, the champion of shareholder interest. But the role Dhirubhai cherished most was perhaps that of India’s greatest wealth creator. In one lifetime, he built, starting from the proverbial scratch, India’s largest private sector enterprise. Reliance Communications Ltd. 10
  • 11. When Dhirubhai embarked on his first business venture, he had a seed capital of barely US$ 300 (around Rs 14,000). Over the next three and a half decades, he converted this fledgling enterprise into a Rs 60,000 crore colossus—an achievement which earned Reliance a place on the global Fortune 500 list, the first ever Indian private company to do so. Dhirubhai is widely regarded as the father of India’s capital markets. In 1977, when Reliance Textile Industries Limited first went public, the Indian stock market was a place patronized by a small club of elite investors which dabbled in a handful of stocks. Undaunted, Dhirubhai managed to convince a large number of first-time retail investors to participate in the unfolding Reliance story and put their hard-earned money in the Reliance Textile IPO, promising them, in exchange for their trust, substantial return on their investments. It was to be the start of one of great stories of mutual respect and reciprocal gain in the Indian markets. Under Dhirubhai’s extraordinary vision and leadership, Reliance scripted one of the greatest growth stories in corporate history anywhere in the world, and went on to become India’s largest private sector enterprise. Through out this amazing journey, Dhirubhai always kept the interests of the ordinary shareholder uppermost in mind, in the process making millionaires out of many of the initial investors in the Reliance stock, and creating one of the world’s largest shareholder families. Reliance Communications Ltd. 11
  • 12. Reliance Communications Ltd. 12
  • 13. VISION Reliance Communications envisions a digital revolution that will bring about a New Way of Life. A Digital Way of Life. For a New India. It will make available television programmes, movies and news capsules on demand. It will unfurl new simulated virtual worlds with exhilarating experiences behind the screens of computers and televisions. Users of Reliance Communication’s full range of services would no longer need audiotapes and CDs to listen to music. Videotapes and DVDs would not be necessary to see movies. Books and CD ROMs would not be needed to get educated. Newspapers and magazines would not be required to keep abreast of events. Vehicles and wallets will become unnecessary for shopping. Reliance Communications will disseminate information at a low cost. "Make a telephone call cheaper than a post card". These prophetic words of Dhirubhai Ambani will be a metaphor of profound significance for Reliance Communications. Reliance Communications will regularly unfold new applications. Continually adapt new digital technologies. Create new customer experiences. Constantly strive to be ahead of the world. Reliance Communications will transform thousands of villages and hundreds of towns and cities across the country. Above all, Reliance Communications will pave the way to make India a global leader in the knowledge. Reliance Communications Ltd. 13

  • 18. BUSINESS Reliance Communications will offer a complete range of telecom services, covering mobile and fixed line telephony including broadband, national and international long distance services, data services and a wide range of value added services and applications that will enhance productivity of enterprises and individuals. Reliance India Mobile, the first of Reliance Communications' initiatives was launched on December 28, 2002, the 70th birthday of the Reliance group founder, Shri. Dhirubhai H. Ambani. This marks the beginning of Reliance's dream of ushering in a digital revolution in India by becoming a major catalyst in improving quality of life and changing the face of India. It aims to achieve this by putting the power of information and communication in the hands of the people of India at affordable costs. Reliance Communications will extend its efforts beyond the traditional value chain to develop and deploy telecom solutions for India's farmers, businesses, hospitals, government and public sector organizations. Reliance Communications Ltd. 18
  • 19. NETWORK Telecommunication networks are the infrastructure for provisioning Communications services. All businesses today are dependent on telecom to continue their day-to-day operations. The range and quality of services that can be provisioned is determined by the quality of the network deployed. The Reliance Communications network consists of 60,000 kilometers of optical fiber cables spanning the length and breadth of India. These cables can carry thousands of billions of bits per second and can instantly connect one part of the country with another. This physical network and its associated infrastructure will cover over 600 cities and towns in 18 of the country's 21 circles, 229 of the nation’s 323 Long Distance Charging Areas (LDCAs) and broadband connectivity to over 190 cities. This infrastructure will be Reliance Communications Ltd. 19
  • 20. backed by state-of-the-art information management systems and a customer-focused organization. An interesting aspect of the network is the manner in which these fibers are interconnected and deployed. Reliance's architecture is so fault-tolerant that the chances of failure are virtually nil. Reliance's ring and mesh architecture topology is the most expensive component to implement, but assures the highest quality of uninterrupted service, even in the event of failure or breakage in any segment of the network. Reliance has 77 such rings across the country with at least three alternative paths available in metros. Connected on this topology, the service has virtually no chance of disruption in quality performance. Reliance's objective is to create value for our customers. Reliance will innovate ceaselessly so that state-of-the-art technology can be leveraged to create products and services that are affordable. Access networks determine the services that can finally be delivered to customer. Our network has wire line access technologies based on fiber as well as copper. Fiber in the access network makes broadband services easy to deploy. The wireless access network deployed for CDMA 1X is spectrum efficient and provides better quality of voice than other networks and higher data rates. CDMA 1X also provides an up gradation path to future enhancements. Reliance Communications Ltd. 20

Since callers can now reach your employees directly on their extensions, lesser number of operators is required. 4. Lesser wires, higher uptime – Hassles associated with managing a complicated jungle of wires (as in analog trunking) are a thing of past. Now with the Reliance E1 DID trunking solution, you get only 4 wires for every 30 channels. So, the wiring at your EPABX becomes simple, clean and easy to manage, leading to higher uptime as outages reduce significantly. Additional Features DID Number Presentation (DNP) – Today when you call from your EPABX, the CLIP that goes out is that of your board number and not your extension/ DID number, thus making it difficult for the called party to identify you. Our ISDN PRI service comes pre-enabled with DNP feature so that your direct phone number is displayed to the caller. Reliance Communications Ltd. 43

  • 54. The foundation of Telecom Network in India was laid by the British sometime in 19th century. The history of BSNL is linked with the beginning of Telecom in India. In 19th century and for almost entire 20th century, the Telecom in India was operated as a Government of India wing. Earlier it was part of erstwhile Post & Telegraph Department (P&T). In 1975 the Department of Telecom (DoT) was separated from P&T. DoT was responsible for running of Telecom services in entire country until 1985 when Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) was carved out of DoT to run the telecom services of Delhi and Mumbai. It is a well known fact that BSNL was carved out of Department of Telecom to provide level playing field to private telecoms. Subsequently in 1990s the telecom sector was opened up by the Government for Private investment, therefore it became necessary to separate the Government's policy wing from Operations wing. The Government of India corporatized the operations wing of DoT on October 01, 2007 and named it as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).BSNL operates as a public sector. Incorporated in 1996, Tata Teleservices was the first to launch CDMA mobile services in India with the Andhra Pradesh circle. Starting with the major acquisition of Hughes Tele.com (India) Limited [now renamed Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited] in December 2002 the company swung into an expansion mode. With the total Investment of Rs 19,924 Crore, Tata Teleservices has created a Pan India presence spread across 20 circles that include Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Gujarat, Karnataka, Delhi, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (E), Uttar Pradesh (W), Kerala, Kolkata, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal. Having pioneered the CDMA 3G1x technology platform in India, Tata Teleservices has established a robust and reliable 3G ready telecom infrastructure that ensures quality in its services. It has partnered with Motorola, Ericsson, Lucent and ECI Telecom for the deployment of a reliable, technologically advanced network. The company, which heralded convergence technologies in the Indian telecom sector, is today the market leader in the fixed wireless telephony market with a total customer base of over 3.8 million. Other services include value added services like voice portal, roaming, post- paid Internet services, 3-way conferencing, group calling, Wi-Fi Internet, USB Modem, data cards, calling card services and enterprise services. Some of the other products launched by the company include prepaid wireless desktop phones, public phone booths, new mobile handsets and new voice & data services such as BREW games, Voice Portal, picture messaging, polyphonic ring tones, interactive applications like news, cricket, astrology, etc. Tata Indicom redefined the existing prepaid mobile market in India, by unveiling their offering – Tata Indicom ‘Non Stop Mobile’ which allows customers to receive free incoming calls. Tata Teleservices today has India’s largest branded telecom retail chain and is the first service provider in the country to offer an online channel www.i-choose.in to offer postpaid mobile connections in the country. • 60. circles, Tata Teleservices offers world-class technology and user-friendly services in 20 circles. Potential Opportunity Areas: Non-metropolitan cities: Where competition from other private ISPs as well as VSNL would be less intense. Here marketing expenses would be lower, and a market could be created through seminars and workshops. Private ISPs entering at a later date would have to contend with established loyalties. Primary target audience would be enterprise customers. Regions with high corporate activity: Such as parts of NCR, Lucknow, Agra, Moradabad, Rudrapur, Sitarganj, Bareilly, Khatima, and Dehradun etc. In these areas, it would be easier to get sufficient leased line subscribers from among research centers, private educational institutions, brass exporters, major manufacturing facilities and export houses, to make the Reliance Communications Ltd. 60
  • 61. initial set-up viable and self-sustaining. Enterprise customers would provide growth potential, with the backbone paid for by leased line customers. Tourist and resort areas: Many premium hotels and resorts will require cyber clubs with Email and surfing facilities, for which leased lines are needed. Educating these potential customers through seminars, and providing very reliable service quality can capture these markets. Pricing for such clients can be higher, thus ensuring lower risk, though with moderate growth potential due to saturation. Clients would not switch providers easily if quality were maintained. Provision of wide range of ancillary services: Due to Internet access being a recent phenomenon, there is a dearth of related skills, such as information research and retrieval from the Internet, high-end technical support and consulting, and end-user training for leveraging the Internet. This is especially true of non-metropolitan areas. Further, small cyber-clubs with trained personnel for the public to walk in and use for Email and Web surfing, much like the ubiquitous PCOs, would generate high revenue. Private ISPs with such services as part of the initial offering would gain high market share and customer loyalty. Regions are poor telecom infrastructure and high industrial density. These areas are ideal for provision of radio-based leased line Internet access, which bypasses terrestrial leased lines and provides the highest reliability. High concentration of automotive or steel goods manufacturers would be a good starting point. Reliance Communications Ltd. 61
  • 62. Pointers for Success: The key factors for success of being the ISP will be a technical edge, financial capability to sustain losses over at least two years, high marketing and promotional budgets, strategic alliances with ancillary service providers, and lobbying power with the central and state governments. These can be further examined further: The technical edge: The track record of ISPs in India, VSNL and the others before it, has been badly marred by poor service quality. Many Internet users would happily switch to a new private ISP if given a guarantee of reliability. "98% Uptime" and "Quality of Service" (available bandwidth) guarantees, while common place in the developed countries. Serious Internet users, especially those who depend upon it for business eagerly await such guarantees. Once credibility is established, pricing can even be higher than competitors’. This technical edge can only be established and maintained by proactive, aggressive network design by experienced consultants, coupled Reliance Communications Ltd. 62
  • 63. with a 24 hour Network Operations Center manned by well-trained experts in all aspects of ISP operation. Further, company representative must be available on 24-hour standby retainers. Close association with the ISPs has shown that customers are extremely sensitive on issues of service outage and unavailability of latest technologies. Financial sustaining power: The private airline industry in India makes a suitable parallel to what is likely to happen with Private ISPs. Many private airlines started up, but with high levels of competition and price wars, coupled with changing government regulations, several could not continue sustaining losses. The recent closing down of several of the new private airlines has made the market much more lucrative for those airlines which survived, so profit margins have shot up, and huge returns on investments are expected in the next few years. The same will happen with Private ISPs, since the scrapping of license fees for Private ISPs will allow many Private ISPs to set up services. Those that survive stand to gain excellent financial returns in 3 to 4 years. High marketing and promotional budgets: The opening up of ISP services without a license fee by the DoT will result in many service providers in each region, and therefore inevitable cannibalization of each others market share by these providers. The only way to gain an edge in market share is by developing a larger audience base through regular Internet technology awareness seminars and workshops, coupled with aggressive marketing, promotional campaigns and schemes. Every potential customer converted by a competitor would potentially recommend that competitor to other customers too. This is especially true in Reliance Communications Ltd. 63
  • 64. this industry as the newness of the field makes any user with even a month’s experience a relative expert for the novices. Strategic alliances with ancillary service providers: Potential customers will look for additional services besides Internet access, such as technical consulting, training, assistance in seeking information from the Internet, Web site design services, Internet advertising consultants, and newsletters about Internet resources. It is nonviable for the ISP to maintain full time staff for all these services that would be required from time to time. However, these services will be a source of additional significant revenue, for the ISP and third party service providers it is allied with. Within a year or so of operations, revenue from this sector would be 25% or more of total revenue. Lobbying power with central and state Governments: Again drawing a parallel with the private airline industry in India, this would be an important factor for any realistic ISP business plan. Going by track records, the ground rules for the industry will be changed repeatedly through unilateral policy announcements by various related Government departments. Like in the airlines, those startups who are able to get prior knowledge of upcoming changes in policy, and have the power to influence these changes, will have better chance of survival as well as the possibility of eliminating competition. This is a reality in Indian Telecom that can not be ignored. Reliance Communications Ltd. 64

Onus of prevention is upon the service provider concerned. Threats: Reliance Communications Ltd. 76
  • 77.  Local ISP’s providing services at cheaper rates.  Delay in installations.  Lack of penetration in the remote areas. Concluding Observations The selling up of enterprise broadband products has potential for high returns on investment. The initial investments are significantly high in order to penetrate in the remote areas and that too on the optic fiber. This field will be intensely competitive, and only a few service providers will survive for this class of service. Those that do survive, stand to gain anywhere up to 70% ROI per annum. A service that is not well designed right from the planning stage will not be able to survive, so the use of expert sales force and well trained technical personnel’s is critically important. Further, the service must be designed to adopt new Internet technologies as early as possible, regardless of cost. Resource planning should be done with buffer capacity of 100% or more, to cope with bursts of growth. Local connectivity options other than POTS, such as Radio, should be given preference, so that the non-availability of service shouldn’t be the constraint. Reliance Communications Ltd. 77
