Writing Pattern
Answer the following questions:
• Compare and Contrast the ant and

comparing them,
contrasting them, or both.
Two (2) ways to organize:
Point-by-point

one at a time
Some cohesive devices you can
use in showing similarities are
likewise, similar to, same with, like,
in the same manner. To show
contrast, cue words such as: on
the other hand, however, while,
different with, in contrast and the
like.
Read the text:
My sisters are as different as yin and yang in terms
of personality, appearance and intelligence. Tina, the
middle child in the family, prefers staying at home
than going out with her friends. She is slim, petite
and has dark skin. As characters from the books she
reads most of the time. In addition, she is very clever
in subjects like Math and Science which made her
graduate with Highest Honors from Senior High
School.
Read the text:
In contrast, my youngest sister, Joni, is the
opposite. She has an outgoing and friendly
personality. There is never a dull moment as she
is always ready with stories to tell. She is tall with
a round plump face and fair skin. Being the
youngest in the family, she is often asked to
perform during family gathering since she sings
and dances well. My sisters may be different from
each other but they adore one another.
1. A compare-and-contrast writing analyzes
two subjects by __________.
2. The purpose of writing a comparison or
contrast essay is not to state what seems
so obvious about the things being
compared but __________.
3. The two main organizing strategies for
comparison-and-contrast writing are:
__________ and __________.
1. Buying things online VS Buying things
at a shopping mall
2. The Best Pinoy dish: Adobo VS
Pinakbet
3. Math vs English: which class is easier?
4. Jollibee or Mang Inasal?
5. Being in a Relationship Vs. Being
Single
Iphone 14

What
is it?
Is Iphone 14 Pro Max worth spending? Yes or No
One of the company’s recent novelties is the Iphone
14 Pro max – a newer and more advanced version of
the most popular phone in the world. However, the
previous model, Iphone 13, seemed to have been
satisfying people’s need just fine as well. So, what is
the difference?

Example of Persuasive WRITING
Escalating conflict in Ukraine poses an immediate
and growing threat to the lives and well-being of the
country’s 7.5 million children. Humanitarian needs are
multiplying – and spreading by the hour. Children have been
killed. Children have been wounded. They are being
profoundly traumatized by the violence all around them.
Undoubtedly, hundreds and thousands of people are on the
move, and family members are becoming separated from
their loved ones.
We must protect all children in Ukraine. Now. They
need peace. Let’s start helping not just the children but all
the victims of this conflict. STOP THE WAR NOW!

CAUSE & EFFECT
- is a text development pattern that
explains WHY something happens.
- It also states WHAT results in a
particular event produces.
- It usually gives a statement emphasizing
the cause and another emphasizing the
effect.
It is used when you are
explaining why something
happened or is happening.
You’re also demonstrating
how one thing affects
another. (Gabelo et al.
2016)
The following guide questions can be
used for cause-effect development:
Why did it happen?
What caused it?
What does it cause?
What are the effects?
How is it related to something
else?
Ishikawa Diagram or Fishbone
Diagram
is the most effective visual
representation of causes and effects.
The ‘fish head’ represents the main
problem.
The potential causes of the problem,
usually derived from brainstorming
sessions or research, are indicated in the
“fish bones” of the diagram.
Further, in developing your texts
you can use signal words like as a
consequence of, as a result of,
because, because of, now that, and
since to express cause while
accordingly, consequently, hence,
so, therefore, and this resulted in,
to signify effects
Take Note:
Cause-and-effect texts
are important because they
attempt to explain the
reasons for things that
occur in life.
Put a check (✓) if the item is suited for a
cause-and-effect text or a cross (x) if not.
____ 1. How to play drums
____ 2. Impact of technology in education
____ 3. Importance of daily reading habit
____ 4. The increased drop-out rate in a
school.
____ 5. The act of kindness
Exercises: Write the cause and the effect
from each sentence. Underline the signal
word that helped you.
1. It had begun to rain, so Sadio and Yusuf had to run
inside.
Cause:____________________________________________
____ Effect:
______________________________________________________
Keyword: __________
2. Since it was so chilly and damp outside, Ahmed built a
big fire in his fireplace.
Cause:____________________________________________
____
3. Crizza was getting very frustrated
and angry because none of her good
being recognized at work.
4. In the movie “The Wizard of Oz”, a
tornado picked up Aunty Lily’s house
as a result, Dorothy and Toto ended
wonderful world of Oz.
Complete the given statements to sum up your learning for this
lesson.
1. Cause and effect is a text development pattern explains
___________ something happens and states
___________results a particular event produces.
2. ___________focuses on: why did the topic happen; what
caused it; what does it cause; what are its effects; and how
is it related to something else.
3. Signal words used in introducing cause include:
_______________________ (Give 1 example)
4. Signal words used in introducing effect include:
_______________________ (Give 1 example)
5. Who is the inventor of the Fish bone diagram.
PROBLEM-
SOLUTION
Problem
A source of
perplexity, distress,
or vexation.
Solution
An action or
process of solving a
problem
CAUSE & EFFECT
- “why” and “what happened” questions
PROBLEM-SOLUTION
- “how” - How will we do things and how
we can resolve issues or concerns
around us
Problem-Solution:
A problem/solution essay
presents a problem, usually
discussing several aspects of
the problem, then concludes
by discussing solutions to the
problem.
 Define the problem to be solved.
 Decide how to organize your writing.
 Write a thesis statement.
 Support your thesis with examples and
details.
 Gather supporting information.
 Brainstorm to identify several solutions.
 Write a strong conclusion.
The problem may be addressed in
the following ways:
Effects only • Describe the problem only in terms of its
effects.
• Use examples.
Causes and
effects
• Outline the causes of the problem.
• Discuss solutions in terms of preventive
measures.
Extended
example
• After a topic sentence, illustrate the problem
by using an extended example (through a
story or an anecdote from your introduction).
How to prevent diabetes?
For example:
Your neighbor is prone to diabetes because of his family
history regarding the disease yet he always skips his
breakfast, snubs fish, and loves to drink Colas. You
might first talk to him; if that doesn’t work, arrange for a
mediator (medical expert; doctor)
Arrange the following steps in developing a
problem-and-solution text.
_____ Brainstorm to identify several solutions.
_____ Gather supporting information.
_____ Define the problem to be solved.
_____ Decide how to organize your writing.
_____ Write a thesis statement.
_____ Support your thesis with examples and
details.
_____ Write a strong conclusion.
List down the top three problems
of millennials today. Then
propose possible solutions to
each of your identified problems.
You can use this as a
springboard in writing a problem-
solution text.

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. There are a lot of writing patterns that we can use in developing compositions or texts. N umber 1…
  2. However, its purpose is not to simply state the obvious but rather to illustrate subtle differences or unexpected similarities between two subjects. As a writer, you should help the readers see how these two ideas are similar or different by showing them its advantages and disadvantages so they are able to weigh the pros and cons before they make judgment or decision.
  3. Block Method - You may begin by saying everything you have to say about the first subject you are discussing then move on and write everything about your second subject. If you are writing a short paragraph or essay, you might be able to fit all your points about each item. - all the information about one of the objects being compared/contrasted is given first, and all the information about the other object is listed afterwards. This type of structure is like the block structure used for cause and effect and problem-solution essays. For the point-by-point structure, each similarity (or difference) for one object is followed immediately by the similarity (or difference) for the other. Both types of structure have their merits. The former is easier to write, while the latter is generally clearer as it ensures that the similarities/differences are more explicit. Point-by-point - if you would want to address one subject at a time, you may use Point-by-point comparison.
  4. Comparison and Contrast
  5. What is the writing pattern?
  6. Comparing & contrasting or comparison & contrast. to illustrate subtle differences or unexpected similarities between two subjects. Block & point-by-point
  7. This is related to our next writing pattern.
  8. It can be in many forms like argument… If you are going to use the persuasion writing pattern, your main goal is to influence, encourage or motivate the readers to do an action or to believe in your ideas. In my opinion, this is the most powerful writing pattern because you’re not just leaving impression to the readers but you are also pushing or encouraging them to do an action.
  9. Presents only one argument Intends to make readers to do certain things Builds arguments on opinion and factual statements
  10. Present the issue and the details of the issue. Issue - Argument specifies what the writer stands for about the issue. Is it okay to buy an Iphone 14 pro max or not?
  11. Arguments shall be supported with a well-researched evidences,
  12. Logical meaning based on known statements or events or conditions; using logic reasoning Statistical meaning of, relating to, based on, or employing the principles of statistics. Anecdotal meaning describes something that is related to a short account of an incident from a particular perspective.  Evidence in the form of stories that people talk about what has happened to them. His conclusions are not supported by data; they are based only on anecdotal evidence.
  13. Issue Evidences Conclusion Persuasive Essay or Text Argument
  14. The next pattern of paragraph development focuses on how you can state details through giving reasons or results of a topic.
  15. Reasons and results are two things that interest readers. Thus, it is important for writers like you to learn how paragraphs of this kind should be developed. Cause and effect is a text development pattern explains ___________ something happens and states ___________results a particular event produces.
  16. For example, a man offends his neighbor by insulting him (the cause). His neighbor becomes angry (the effect and the next cause) and he in turn tells his friends (the next effect and cause). His friends also become angry (another effect and cause) and tell their friends (another effect and cause).
  17. The Ishikawa diagram, also referred to as a “fishbone diagram,” ….. Invented by Kaoru Ishikawa It is also known as a fishbone diagram because of its shape. A fishbone diagram is a visual way to look at cause and effect. It is a more structured approach than some other tools available for brainstorming the causes of a problem (e.g., the Five Whys tool). The problem or effect is displayed at the head or mouth of the fish.
  18. because, as a result, resulted, caused, affected, since, due to, effect, and so.
  19. For example, try thinking of the effects that mobile legends may have on grade 11 students at CNHS. How did you come up with the idea?
  20. Wrong Check Check Check Wrong
  21. 1. Cause: It had begun to rain. Effect:  Sadio and Yusuf had to run inside.             Key word: so 2. Cause: It was so chilly and damp outside.            Effect: Ahmed built a big fire in his fireplace.            Key word: Since Example: Scientists believe that long ago humans needed food, so they followed herds of mammoths to North America.             Cause:  Humans needed food.             Effect: They followed herds of mammoths to North America.             Key word: so
  22. 3.  Cause: Crizza was getting very frustrated and angry.             Effect: None of her good ideas were being recognized at work.             Key word: because 4. Cause: A tornado picked up Aunty Em’s house in Kansas.             Effect: Dorothy and Toto ended up in the wonderful world of Oz.             Key word: as a result 5. Cause:  Archaeologists wanted to learn how life was long ago.             Effect: They study artifacts.             Key word:  since
  23. 1. why 2. what 3. Cause-effect / Cause and effect 4. answers…
  24. Complicated situation – perplexity Distress – extreme anxiety, pain Vexation – state of Frustration
  25. After answering the “why” and the “what happened”, we now move on to the “how” - How will we do things and how we can resolve issues or concerns around us? This time, you will apply the problem-solution pattern of development.
  26. A “Child in conflict with the law” or “CICL” refers to a child who is alleged as, accused of, or adjudged as, having committed an offense under Philippine laws. JUVENILE – relating to young people or teenagers Waywardness - following one's own capricious, wanton, or depraved inclinations : ungovernable. a wayward child. : following no clear principle or law : unpredictable. 3. : opposite to what is desired or expected : untoward.
  27. Steps in developing a problem-solution text Identify what is the problem to be solved Plan for the structure of your essay before you choose supporting evidences Write your topic sentence. Give supporting evidences Provide additional information and details Generate and explore ideas and develop these in order to come up with the best solutions A strong conclusion restate the thesis, offers new insights, and forms a personal connection to the readers. This is where you leave a final impression on the central or main idea.
  28. Discussion of the problem Extended – mas pinahaba- all the details that are anecdotal
  29. 6 5 1 2 3 4 7
