2. Shades of Teale
Shades of Teale is the inspirational story of one
woman’s bumpy journey through an unhappy
marriage to a stronger understanding of her own
self-worth.
3. Shades of Teale
“All intimate relationships are
journeys,” notes author Susan
Crossman.
“They start in one place and
ultimately take us somewhere
completely unexpected; along
the way we learn surprising
things about ourselves and our
place in the world and that’s
exactly what happens to my
main character, Teale Covey.”
4. Shades of Teale
Ms. Crossman notes that the novel also looks at the
tricky balance between happiness and compromise in a
marriage, and it details how Teale ends
up walking out of who she really is,
and into a world driven by her
husband’s expectations.
5. Shades of Teale
Susan Crossman began writing the novel after doing
some volunteer PR for a women’s shelter. She felt there
was a disconnect between a shelter overflowing with
women and children and a community where the topic of
abuse was almost invisible.
“It disturbed me,” she says.
6. Shades of Teale
“I was meeting some dynamic women who seemed very
strong and capable, and yet they were hiding from the
men they thought they loved.
“The process of writing this
novel was about my own desire
to uncover the dynamics of
domestic abuse; its
existence makes absolutely no
logical sense at all.”
7. Shades of Teale
Every six days a woman in Canada is murdered by her
intimate partner.
Emergency shelters in this country
provide refuge for 3,000 women and
2,500 kids 2,500 children every day.
8. Shades of Teale
Ms. Crossman’s writing
style is probing and full of
irony. She uses masterful
turns of phrase to weave
a story that is by turns
entertaining and sobering.
