I strive to be a true disciple of servant leadership throughout
the year, and yet I admit that I fall short far too often. Our
teams should be able to rely upon us throughout the year to
lead them, challenge them, and prepare them to take on ever
greater responsibilities. But during this 2014 holiday season, I
am reminded that I can always do more.
Many organizations begin to feel the holiday season come
upon them in the form of diminished staff and technology
freezes. Hallways and telephones grow quieter and emails are
sent into a digital chasm only to be answered in the New Year.
What better time to pause and evaluate whether we are truly
giving all that we have to our employees.
We can begin by identifying one or two areas that we
could be of service to a direct or indirect report or colleague.
Engage colleagues in conversation and inquire directly if there
is something you could do to assist them from your areas of
expertise. Engage employees to help them take an inventory of
current year accomplishments and offer them your assistance
to remove roadblocks or to provide opportunities for their
additional professional growth and satisfaction in the New
Year.
Step back and reassess your own “leadership by example” at
your organization.
Do you exemplify your company’s values?
Do you speak up when a practice or process violates
the law, ethical business guidelines, or standards of common
decency?
Do you promote your brand to others outside your
organization?
When given the choice in the marketplace, do you choose
your organization’s products and services?
The mark of a loyal servant leader is often distinctively
present when  you  continue to lead compassionately and
deliberately, as  others  are already heading for the exits into
holiday hibernation. Let us each challenge ourselves as this
year nears its conclusion to take one or two concrete actions
that will give more to others at our organization. I hope you’ll
join me in this endeavor. LE
