Probability: Learning Through Technology
1.
2. Technology Incorporated
In this day and age, technology is very much at our disposal
when it comes to teaching anything, but especially Mathematics.
The internet is just one of the big technological devices that we
can use in the classroom to teach probability and make it fun for
everyone! Below are a few examples that will be shown
throughout this presentation.
Videos
Web Quests
Smart Board presentations
Music
Interactive computer games
3. Videos
- Videos found on the internet are one of the easiest
methods of introducing and teaching probability
that I have found. It’s very useful for you students
to use videos as a learning tool because in most
cases, educational videos provide both visuals
and audio commentary.
- The video I’m about to show you uses great
examples of how one can learn probability through
the use of cards. Pay close attention to everything
that is said, because he explains his methods very
well.
5. Web Quests
- Web quests are great interactive tools that teachers and
students can use together or that students can use
independently. You guys can increase your probability
skills while having fun and getting feedback right away
to know what you need to work on. Later, we will be
doing a web quest on probability together. Below are
just a few examples that you may see used on any
probability web quest questions.
6. Smart Board Activities
- As the lucky students of today’s generation, you guys are
able to use smart boards for instructional use. You are able
to write, draw, move, select, and create different things using
smart boards. For probability, smart boards can be used to
draw and fill out graphs, create pie charts and spinners, and
to respond to questions. They’re a great tool and it’s always
fun to get up and use a big interactive screen! Here is an
example activity one can use on a smart board:
7. Music
- Music is probably one of the most popular forms of
technological use today. I’m sure the majority of you own
some sort of mp3 player. And once you listen to songs, you
start to remember the lyrics well. So learning probability
through a song would be a great way for the instruction to
remain in your mind. Also, just because it’s a song about
something educational, doesn’t mean it can’t be to the beat
of something really catchy. The video I’m going to link for you
guys is called the Probability Song and is sung by the same
music to the Bruno Mars hit, The Lazy Song. Listen well and
try and follow along to the lyrics.

8. Probability Computer
Games
- There are also many and many probability computer games that the
teacher could use for perhaps some educational indoor fun on a rainy
day or if students want to play these games at home, they certainly can.
Probability computer games can be found online simple by typing those
words into a search bar. These games may seem similar to the web
quests, but instead of continuing further with multiple questions that
build, computer games can stop and start whenever you please. They
are generally more geared towards enjoyment, also. Below is a picture
of a fun game I found that one can play to enjoy and gain knowledge
from. Here’s the link:

This is also another link to a site that is full of fun
probability games:

math.html
9. Web Quest Activity
- This is a link that leads us to a great web
quest activity that I’m going to have you
guys enter into your computers. It
consists of a series of questions
pertaining to finding the probability of
certain events occurring. The questions
being asked shouldn’t be too easy or
hard for you guys. Have fun!
