2. • The BBC is a public service broadcasting organisation which is oldest in the world.
• Public service broadcasting means that it is funded by the public. The fee is
decided in parliament and varies every year.
• The BBC has also been at the forefront of modern entertainment setting up
services such as BBC IPlayer with exclusive content and on demand catch up from
shows from all four of there channels.
• The BBC’s motto is to inform, educate and entertain.
• They also have various radio stations in different regions and languages.
• Attempting to cater for all ages the BBC’s programme schedule is diverse in
content. For example BBC three is aimed at the younger generations ranging from
13-18 and BBC four aimed at 30+
3. • Sky is a media conglomerate owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch
• It is privately funded and makes money through the means of
advertising and private investments.
• Sky is the biggest television subscription service in Europe with
roughly 11 million customers to date and also offers packages in
telephone and broadband.
• Sky’s content consists of hundreds of channels including movies and
sky sports which is one of the main attractions to customers.
• Sky also funds a lot of new tv programmes and original content in
order to fill slots on their many channels such as sky arts and sky one.
4. Sky vs BBC
• Sky makes a lot more money than the BBC but this isn’t a valid
argument due to BBC being a non profit organisation.
• In terms of content the BBC has been creating revolutionary TV
programmes which have been acclaimed all over the world as ‘ground
breaking’ for years and years to come, where as Sky’s content is
purely to fill slots and gain viewing figures.
• Online the BBC is holding its own and offers a lot of content such as
catch up and streaming on the ‘iPlayer’, but due to sky having its own
on demand service and a lot more content and channels to watch and
stream it gets a lot more clientele.
5. Conclusion
• I think the BBC are winning due to the free service and the heritage of
original and diverse programming catering for all consumers across
the country.
• Although I believe the BBC is the better organisation Sky is coming
close behind with more money, they can make more content due to
the funding.
