September is National Preparedness Month
The devastating hurricanes and wildfires of 2018 have proven the
importance of preparing for disasters. Every September, National
Preparedness Month provides tools and resources to make preparation
easier. This year, the focus is on planning, which includes: lifesaving skills
such as CPR and first aid; checking insurance policies and coverage; and
planning ahead for the costs associated with disasters.

2. N95 respirators are the most widely used respiratory protection in the
workplace. Because they are so commonly used to eliminate exposure to
hazardous airborne particles, NIOSH designated Sept. 5 as N95 Day to
share resources that promote proper use of NIOSH-certified respirators.
The observance may be over, but proper respiratory practices are
important all year long. NIOSH offers a variety of free resources including
fact sheets, articles, graphics and other information.
Visit the N95 Day page.

September Workplace Safety News & Notes
Here's a collection of safety news from around the web:
CDC: Construction Workers at Highest Risk of Death from Drug Overdose
A new CDC study of fatal overdose data from 21 states found that construction workers are more likely than
workers in any other occupation in the U.S. to die of a drug overdose, and they also had the third-highest rate of
prescription opioid overdoses. Another recent study in Massachusetts found construction and mine workers there
died of overdoses at a rate six times higher than the general working population. The CDC study showed that
miners, food industry workers, health-care practitioners and support staff, and personal care workers also had
elevated overdose death rates. Review the study.
OSHA Offers Updated Info on Protecting Workers from Legionnaire’s Disease
OSHA recently updated its Legionellosis Safety and Health Topics page to provide the latest information on
preventing, identifying and controlling Legionella bacteria hazards in workplaces. Updates include Chapter 7 of the
OSHA Technical Manual and the Legionella eTool. Employers, healthcare providers and health and safety
professionals can use the new resource to protect workers and collaborate during worksite investigations.
