20. Impact of MDGs on Maternal & Child Health in India
World Health Organization Report-- Decline
Deaths of children (under 5 years of age)
---12.6 million in 1990 to 6.3 million in 2013
Maternal deaths
----estimated 523,000 in 1990 to 289,000 in 2013.
--The decline in maternal deaths greatly missed
the mark of the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs)
---if present trends continue, 4.4 million
children younger than 5 years will still die in
2030.

Innovative programs introduced in response to the Millennium Development
Goals showed promise to reduce the global rate of maternal mortality. The
Sustainable Development Goals, introduced in 2015, were designed to build on
this progress.

66. Take Home Mesage
Improving maternal & child health is key to
----saving the lives of more than half a million women &
child --who die as a result of complications from
pregnancy and childbirth each year.
Notable improvements were observed in maternal
and child health and maternal health care utilization
across social groups in India over the period 2005â
06 to 2015â16,
and ---if the trends continue the country can achieve the
SDG target in maternal health by 2030.
However, progress in nutrition and other health
indicators has been slow and uneven.
